“Look for the details”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

Bo kaap is just off the long street and a nice walk to and from the V&A so it is pretty easy to get there. Once there, the area is not that big but has doznes of beautifully painted houses in bright colours in a very small area which make for very nice picture opportunities.

Many of them conatin nice details such as painted roses on the rose street and the like so do have a careful look. Be aware the streets can be quite steep and the walkways do have potholes.

“Colorful buildnings”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

We went to Bo Kaap on our own, no guide, in the afternoon just to check out the colorful buildings. We were only there for about 10-15 minutes and that was all we needed to walk through a few of the streets and take som pictures. There are some streets higher up (away from Long Street) that we found a bit dodgy. I'm sure you can appreciate Bo Kaap's history more if you go with a guide, but if it's only pictures you want, then you can manage on your own.

“Historic”

Well worth a visit to this old Malay part of the city with colourful houses. Not at all commercial - just a normal neighbourhood. Take some shots with Table Mountain in the background.

“Vibrant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2014

This vibrant, colorful houses in this old Malay area instantly cheer you up. A lot of kids playing and locals hanging by their houses. A lot of various B&B's in this area. Beautiful sights of the city and Table Mountain. The whole area is located on a steep hill side, so wear a pair of comfy walking shoes.

“Explore Bo Kaap with a knowledgeable guide”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

We had a very interesting and informative 3-hour tour of Bo Kaap, including the museum, with Shireen Narkedien (shireen.narkedien@gmail.com), a local expert who seems to know just about everyone who lives in the area. We had passed through the neighborhood quickly a couple of days before on a large tour of Cape Town but saw and learned so much more when we went back with Shireen. The history of the Cape Malay people is quite engrossing and we also learned more about Apartheid in South Africa than we did on our large group tour. Shireen also provided us with a variety of tasty Malay snacks that really added to the experience. And her pricing was very fair.
