“See every day”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

Vibrant, colourful homes dating back to early Cape days when these were town houses for the rich farmers, now the home of a large Cape Malay population. The Muezzin call can be heard from all parts. Some good eating places, too.

“Andulela Cooking Safari in Bo-Kaap”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

"Salt is like love. Once you can give it, you can't take it away." These are the words of our host, Faldela Tolker, who welcomed us in her home as part of the Andulela Cooking Safari in Bo-Kaap. We began the morning with a stop at Atlas Trading Company, where we learned about Cape Malay spices and purchased spices for a meal we would later prepare. We made a stop at the local coffee house and also a neighborhood grocery store. We then were welcomed in the home of Fadela. She taught us how to make roti, fold samosas and prepare chicken curry. One person in the group was a vegan; another didn't eat chicken -- Faldela accomodated these special needs by preparing additional dishes for these guests. We met her husband and children. We helped roll out the dough, stir the curry and stuff the samosas. It was a great day and I highly recommend this experience for anyone visiting Cape Town. It was a wonderful way of learning more about the history, culture and cuisine while spending the morning inside the home of a very special woman who I will never forget. Love -- that's her special ingredient. You'll feel it when you walk in the door!

what an amazing district with so much history. And all the colourful houses are really lovely to see. There are a few B&B's and coffee shops as well.

“Bo-Kaap”

I drive through the Bo-Kaap everyday. It is colorful, ever-changing and warms my heart. Pigeons, school kids and coffee shops are some of the daily scenes I pass on my way to work. Priceless.

“Don't miss "Cooking in the Bokaap" with Andulela”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

About two weeks ago, I took this cooking tour in Cape Town and enjoyed it immensely! Our knowledgeable guide took us first to the Bokaap museum which gave us a bit of the history of the area and then we visited a spice shop which was wonderful. Then on to our cooking class in the home of a very charismatic member of this community. She was full of personality and made the experience so much fun for all of us - there were eight of us in the group. We made curried chicken and samosas, typical of Cape Malay cuisine. After learning, among other things, how to expertly fold the samosas into a triangle, we finally sat down and enjoyed the meal we had helped to prepare - a terrific and memorable experience!
