We found Walden house to be good location and convenient for sight seeing in the Cape. It is beautiful residence and very clean and friendly staff. Of all the restaurants in close proximity we find Beleza to be best. It was so good food that we went many times. Overall Cape Town is very beautiful.

We were in Cape Town for two nights at the start of a fortnight rambling eastwards towards Port Elizabeth and stayed at Walden House on the recommendation of a friend. We arrived by taxi on a Sunday morning, straight off the overnight flight from London - it was well before normal hotel check-in time. But we were welcomed as friends, we dived into the pool for a refreshing dip, and settled down to tea and cookies in the garden. Our room was ready by the time we had finished tea - a lovely, airey room with big windows and a luxuriously wide bed. Location-wise, it's a short taxi ride to Table Mountain (there's a great view of the mountain from the balcony) and it's a short walk to the Mount Nelson Hotel if you want to have a drink on the famous hotel's terrace (where we went twice: service was great one night, and appalling on the second occasion). We had initially booked ourselves into Walden House for the first two nights of our trip; we liked it so much that we automatically returned there for our final night before flying home early next morning.

What a lovely place to stay in Cape Town; it was airy, clean, reasonably well located with secure parking. Our room was delightful although I would say that it was too light and would suggest black-out blinds behind the curtains - we found we were woken at 5am by the sun which wasn't the most relaxing! The team of staff working there were fantastic and always very helpful with booking restaurants, etc. There was a pool but Cape Town was a bit chilly for that but it did look lovely for when it is baking hot there. The parking is secure which is a bonus but you would have to book a cab into town...especially at night time as it is about 30 minutes walk to the water front. Breakfast was delicious with several options and plenty of great coffee - even crackers on Christmas Day :) I would recommend the Walden House if you have a car and want to explore the cape as opposed to being in the centre of things all the time - the table mountain cable way was five minutes drive which meant we got up quickly on Christmas morning. Similarly the road to Cape Point is seconds away so you are out of Cape Town v quickly. Overall a lovely boutique B&B.

We were nervous about this guesthouse at first as, having never been to South Africa before, we felt we might be a bit far out of the centre. Nothing could be further from the truth however. For us this guesthouse was perfectly situated. It was walkable (probably aorund 15-20mins) to get to the centre of Cape Town and also to the Waterfront but it came into it's own in the evenings. Although Walden House is on a quiet residential looking road, Tamboerskloof is actually great for nightlife. With a number of truly excellent restaurants and bars right on the doorstep it was easily within stumbling distance.

The walk into town is not the prettiest as the main road is more industrial but you do get fabulous views of Table Mountain as soon as you step out the door.

The rooms in the hotel are extremely clean and neat. Decor is minimal but in a very quaint, simple way. Bed linen is snow white and crisp, towels are clean and fluffy and sprigs of lavender are left on both to add just a very subtle hint of colour. All the furniture is whitewashed wood and the room we stayed in was very light and airy. The grounds are very small but immaculately kept. The pool is very small and I have to confess we did not try it out but I loved the pathways which were lined with lavender so gave off a beautiful fragrance everytime we returned.

The staff were really friendly and gave us plentiful advice on everything from table mountain opening hours (including advice on the effects of fog and wind) to booking us in for shark diving.

Breakfast was great - freshly cooked to order with a different selection of fruit everyday. My husband even asked how they did their mushrooms (with garlic and herb seasoning apparently!).

If you are looking for modern, chic style then this is not for you. But if you are looking for simple elegance and friendly service then you will love it.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Walden House. The rooms are lovely, the breakfast is delicious and plentiful, and no matter what we asked the response was "Pleasure!" As other reviewers mentioned, the location is great -- close to bars/restaurants and a quick cab ride to the Waterfront. TV was small and didn't get many channels but we didn't go to South Africa to watch TV!

I can not imagine what more a person can do to make this place look prettier. When i walked in to Walden House i knew i was walking in to a very special place.
The place is beautiful. We were very fornuate to be upgraded. What a lovely end to our holiday. First morning i woke up and found i was looking straight at the table mountain, The view was magnificient. Our own balcony and the view from both sides were awsome. On one side it was the city view and the other side it was the table mountain.
Breakfast is out of this world. What a spread. The little weather reports around the napkins are really cute. Attention to detail on everything.
Staff were very friendly and i will go there again for sure!
A Big thank you to the Walden Team!

We spent three nights at the Walden House on a recent visit to Cape Town. The house is a very attractive building – very fresh and clean looking throughout, with white walls, white-washed floors, and white linen. Our room was attractive and comfortable, and the bathroom was very nice and modern. However there was no door to the shower, which soon became a theme to our trip around South Africa. I guess that a shower door could be seen as aesthetically unpleasing but it does have some practical use. By the time we’d both showered, the entire bathroom floor was soaked, which was irritating, not to mention a bit of a liability regarding slipping. There was also no bin in the room (only a very small one in the bathroom) – which is a bit picky, but was fairly inconvenient.

On the plus side, the location of Walden House is very good. We were close to some restaurants and bars (fine to walk to, even at night) and a short drive from Table Mountain and the waterfront. It is also walking distance to some of the cities sites / museums, including a stop on the sightseeing bus tour. The hotel also has secure parking (although it’s small and tricky to manoeuvre if there are more than a couple of cars parked), and a small pool which was nice for relaxing by after a day’s sightseeing.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had read on Tripadviser about them booking tickets for Robben Island for guests, so we emailed them before we left the UK to ask them if they would be able to do this. They were more than happy to do so, which was great as we had not received a reply from the official Robben Island website. The Island is definitely worth a visit so I’m very glad Walden House was able to help us! The staff were also happy to book taxis for us whenever we needed them.

The previous reviewer said that they had to pay in advance. We actually paid when we left (as we did at other places), so I guess there is some variation.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Walden House if you are staying in Cape Town, especially in terms of personal service and value for money compared to staying in a chain hotel.
