“Abolsutely Tops!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2007

It would be hard to find any superlatives not already used to describe this small hotel.

Calling it a hotel really does not work since the close, friendly attention by the staff and the intimate surroundings are really what one finds in very well run B&Bs.

Louis, Jimmy and Mark were extremely helpful and rose to every challenge with grace and efficiency.

Their recommendations for car hire, restaurants, entertainment and etc. were all spot on.

The high tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel was about $65 if you want to enjoy a bit of nostalgia. Greens for quick lunches or early dinners is close and very reasonable. Try Arnold's for a wild menu... I loved the grilled warthog ribs! See the menu on candid photos.

The free internet (two computers) was very helpful for checking parts of the trip ahead and for keeping in contact with the other end of the planet.

An outstanding place to stay, immaculate in every way, rooms large and airy. We had problems with the aircon in our room so Marcel and Louis went out of their way to bring us in a portable machine. They got an engineer in on the first possible day and also took money off the bill to compensate! staff in the kitchen wonderful. The location is excellent with a whole host of restaurants nearby, four of us stayed for 13 days, two are teenagers but they also found it wonderful. So much to do and lots of excellent shopping. Food is great and the cleanliness puts London to shame. Have no worries here, even the hospitals are good...(thats another story)

This is almost a flawess property. It has a wonderful ambience, great staff, excellect decor, good location, great family style breakfast......the only small and it is inconsequentially small (meaning less than stellar) feature are the rooms themselves, which are perfectly fine, but just a tad closer to average, while every other aspect is a knock out (it does not matter, just an observation)....this is a great place where you feel comfortable and catered to....I would go back in a heartbeat and recommend without reservation. One suggestion is do as they say and use the Excite Cab Co. for ALL your needs....did when leaving the hotel, but foolishly picked up a cab from the queue twice when out and about and it was a Horror.

After reading such excellent reviews I was worried that I may not be able to get a room at fairly short notice. Luckily for me, they still had space. Since I found this hidden gem on 'tripadvisor' I felt I had to contribute a little something on my return!

From the moment I arrived I was made to feel relaxed and welcome. The decor was amazing, and had me wishing that my own home could look as good. Mark was a great help with booking day trips and giving me tips on where to go.

An African Villa truly is a little oasis of calm. From the wonderful breakfasts, to the friendly staff, and superb location, I couldn't have asked for a more perfect place to stay. I only hope that it doesn't become too popular for me to get a room there when I visit in the future!

we booked on basis of previous reviews and it was even better than we expected !
An oasis of sanity after a long [9 hours Vancouver to Amsterdam + 11 Amsterdam to Cape Town] flight - warm, welcoming, very tastefully decorated, the owners are a delight and the breakfasts fantastic. Their excellent driver picked us up at the airport and our room was ready - service couldn't have been better.
If you're going to Cape Town and they aren't full stay there - better and more comfortable than most big international chains, and a lot more personal & friendly.
Plus its safe walking distance from a great place fror dinner - The Millers Thumb, and a good laundromat if you need one.

Having stayed in Cape Town as a tourist before, I can endorse this smart bed and breakfast without hesitation. There is a friendly and personal air about the place which, coupled with the modern african decor, makes you feel totally at ease and comfortable. The rooms are spacious (huge in some cases) and our room with a balcony over the road was not easy to fault.
Communal areas and library with sherry and internet access are impressive.
Breakfast, weather permitting, is taken in the garden (complete with plunge pool) and you are offered a buffet selection and/or cooked which are all good. Eating your breakfast adjacent to the kitchen, some may find the staff seemingly boisterous, but if you find this to be the case then you are not in the wrong hotel - you are in the wrong country! All staff are busy and friendly.
Tamberskloef as a location is ideal for the tourist. Equidistant from Camps Bay and the waterfront (5 mins in a car), and within walking distance of Long Street and therefore many of the city's best restaurants and bars.
Value and attention to the visitor are first rate.

My grlfriend & I stayed in African Villa for 4 nights at the end of April 2007 and loved every minute of it. The location is perfect with views out to Table Mountain which is only a 5 minute drive. The Waterfont (this is where the ferry leaves for Robben Island) and Camps Bay are equally nearby taking maximum 10 minutes in a taxi.

Louise, the owner, was there to welcome us when we arrived and get us checked in. This included a brief orientation chat about how to get around, best restaurants to eat in, car hire possibilities, recommended tours etc.

As soon as we arrived we got a real sense of "home from home". The colourful lounge area has big comfy sofas and tradtional African furniture. There are even carafs of port on the coffee tables for complimentary night caps should you wish.

Al the bedrooms, and there are only 12, have an individual quality with superb decor and furnishings. The rooms are spotlessly clean, infact the hotel is spotlessly clean.

The breakfast in the morning is the perfect start to a day. There is no ceremony with everyone sitting together enjoying the choice of fresh fruit, yoghurts, & good old "full englsh".

I work in the travel industry and will be recommending African Villa to friends and family, and if we go back then it is the first place we will think of staying.

Thanks
Claire & Simon

This Villa is much more than that! It is in fact three houses which are part of a Victorian terrace dating from 1892. The double story houses have been joined together and so the inside spaces are much larger than the facade suggests. It's like walking into a TARDIS someone has written on Tripadvisor! There are 12 rooms and the hotel is owner managed.Location is vital when choosing a spot for you vacation and this more than a Villa is within an easy walk of all tourist attractions in the city area. The others (like the fabulous beaches) are a short taxi ride away. There is a small plunge pool in a peaceful courtyard where a very full breakfast is served in summer. (In winter there's a sociable dining room and an eco-friendly fire blazing). Your hosts are very careful to offer you as much information as you want and they will arrange car rental, restaurant reservations, tours etc. As required.Free internet on 2 computers in a library area and wireless access is available in all rooms. At night the night porter will set out complimentary sherry and port and at other times there is an honesty bar and guest fridge in the kitchen. Parking is on street and there is no charge (street guards patrol) but you should not need a car from this well placed hotel. ... more   less
