“Lovely guesthouse that felt like home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2012

The design of the hotel is really impressive. Lots of African details without it looking overly themed. The staff were really polite and helpful; they made the stay very easy for us. The rooms were really nicely decorated and immaculately clean. Breakfast was a feast and delicious.

Tamberskloef, where the Villa is, is a good location to explore the whole of Cape Town - nestled by the mountain the City Bowl or Cape Peninsula aren't far away.

I'd highly recommend this place

One of the best places we have stayed in, at any price. From the welcome to the honesty bar, to the great location via a superb breakfast, An African Villa has it all. Rooms are large, spotless, and well appointed. But what really sets this place apart is the service, nothing is to much trouble. Need a restaurant? Not only will the owners book it for you they will also give printed directions if it is local, if you need a cab then a speed dial on the (free) phone will quickly get you one, then you are told when it arrives. An African Villa will definitely be our first port of call whenever we visit Cape Town.

Ok, you are not going to get hot-and-cold running chamber maids, but you will get a home-from-home feel from this small guest house. I feel wrong calling it a B&B as it provides more than that. The rooms are large and clean - ours was overlooking Table Mountain. Breakfast were, basically, whatever you want....most opt for omelettes and bacon so can't go wrong. I could wax on about the helpfulness of the owners and how nothing was too difficult including booking local restaurants and advising on walking routes.....but that does not need to be mentioned as it was so good as to sound a touch sycophantic...! If you stay here, don't worry about a car for the first few days as you don't need one. There are plenty of really good places to eat near-by with bars aplenty. But the area is not 'party central'....it can be described as "just enough!"

If you want a really nice place to stay that is convenient for walking into Town, in an area with loads of places to eat, with staff who know their stuff and breakfasts to set you up for the day, then stay here. If you are really lucky, you get caramel shortbread for your journey on our departure!

What can I say? An African Villa is the best place where you can stay in CT, definitely one of the best B&B we have ever been to. The rooms, the ambience, the pool/ breakfast area, everything is beautiful. The owners take good care of you and help you planning your tours in CT and the Cape Peninsula providing preciuos advice. Do not hesitate, go ahead and book it. It doesn't get any better than that...

That is what my husband exclaimed as we arrived. This was the fourth stop of our sounth african adventure, and there was no disappointments at this stop. Keith welcomed us and helped us get our bearings, Jimmy made dining plans for us and it resulted in a fabulous meal. The accomodations were comfortable, and the breakfast was plentuful and delicious. I loved topping off out evening with the complimentary port. Thanks to all!! Diane, Mike and Cameron.

We spent six nights here, celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and have only good things to say! We were greeted by Cindy, who spent time taking us through places to visit and giving us recommendations for places to eat. She gave us a street map, which we took everywhere with us and proved invaluable! The room was clean and well furnished and clean at the front of the property, with a balcony. The breakfasts were superb and we were able to eat outside every morning. It is located in a quiet street with great views of Table Mountain. We even managed to walk to the V&A waterfront on a couple of occasions (but caught a taxi back!). We ate at Aubergine and Millers Thumb, which were both excellent. You definitely need to stay at least four days to make the most of it. We hired a car (recommended by Jimmy) for a couple of days and drove out to Cape Point (via the penguins!) and Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, all well worth a visit. Also it is worth using the "hop on hop off" buses - we went to Camps Bay and Kirstenbosch using this. Table Mountain is definitely worth a visit if the weather permits! They also have two computers for the use of the guests - and a tray of sherry and port every night!

Many thanks to Keith, Cindy, Jimmy and Louis for your hospitality - and many thanks for the bottle of bubbly on our anniversary! Of all the places we visited during our time in South Africa, we would definitely like to go back to Cape Town - and An African Villa.

Room Tip: I am sure all the rooms are excellent but I would recommend a room at the front of the property.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This Villa is much more than that! It is in fact three houses which are part of a Victorian terrace dating from 1892. The double story houses have been joined together and so the inside spaces are much larger than the facade suggests. It's like walking into a TARDIS someone has written on Tripadvisor! There are 12 rooms and the hotel is owner managed.Location is vital when choosing a spot for you vacation and this more than a Villa is within an easy walk of all tourist attractions in the city area. The others (like the fabulous beaches) are a short taxi ride away. There is a small plunge pool in a peaceful courtyard where a very full breakfast is served in summer. (In winter there's a sociable dining room and an eco-friendly fire blazing). Your hosts are very careful to offer you as much information as you want and they will arrange car rental, restaurant reservations, tours etc. As required.Free internet on 2 computers in a library area and wireless access is available in all rooms. At night the night porter will set out complimentary sherry and port and at other times there is an honesty bar and guest fridge in the kitchen. Parking is on street and there is no charge (street guards patrol) but you should not need a car from this well placed hotel. ... more   less
