Good food and not the typical food you would see on a take away menu. Very good crispy duck, in fact, all the mains were good. As for the soup on the set menu option, it is a bit strange if you are not familiar with it but it was still good.
Yes they can work a lot on the the decor and spruce it up a bit to take it into the 21st century but then no Chinese restaurant is ever without it's quirky side and the "great food, no atmosphere" label.
What could be improved on was the fact that the waiter that welcomed us at the door was sporting a t-shirt from a pizza delivery place...Just a thought then, maybe he could have just worn a plain white or black t-shirt? Or a Mr Chan branded shirt?

We have tried quiet a few Chinese places in Cape Town, most of them we left without even trying the food, they were just too disgusting. Mr Chan also takes a bit of a push, everything is a bit tatty, has seen better times, but as the place was almost packed at 17h30 is must be good. I like busy places, if a restaurant is full it means people like it, that's why we stayed and were not disappointed. We have now been a couple of times and have studied the menu extensively and have always settled for at least one Crispy Duck plus something different every time. The crispy duck is a winner, it is really crispy and virtually boneless, tasty and "finger licking" good!
Prices are reasonable and service is very good, some Chinese servers are not the best English speakers but certainly the best "smilers".

I cannot tell the exact type of Chinese food Mr Chan specializes in. They make Cantonese food as well as Sichuan food. But both are pretty good. Love the Mapo Tofu, the sizzling kingklip with black bean sauce and their West Lake beef soup.

Mr Chan is actually in Main Rd Sea Point - not Cape Town Centre.

It's an old style South African Chinese restaurant, family run with top class food, served piping hot and really full of flavour. Excellent service as well - not to be missed while you're in Cape Town.
