“Wonderful all round!”
Reviewed April 20, 2007

A fabulous hotel. As we arrived late they kept the bar open a little longer so that we could relax after our flight.
We were on a package deal which included breakfast and dinner and a suite facing the ocean. A bottle of chilled wine with snacks were waiting for us in the room (so we didn't need the bar after all!)
The room was a lovely suite, recently modernised with a shower. (I am sure if we had asked for a bath, there would have been no problems!)
As for the breakfast- fit for a king, even catered for wheat intoleance, which is nice to know!
Dinner was wonderful, if you have children, the childrens menu is beautifully done and comes with crayons to colour it in after the decision has been made!
The pool and facilities were excellent. They even have a supply of high strength suncreams if you need them.
The shuttle can take you to numerous placesif you decide you would like to sightsee and there are some lovely rock pools a few hundred yards from the hotel.
It is not on the beach but you can be shuttled there and there is a road directly in front of the hotel between you and the sea, but absolutely no noise in the rooms facing the sea.
The family suites (which have additional bedrooms) are very well set out and they are really family friendly.
As for the Jazz brunch, its superb...a definite must, even if you are not staying at the hotel!
Would most definately stay again. Sorry I haven't any photos but the website has so look it up.

We stayed at Winchester Mansions as the 2nd part of our Honeymoon. We drove from Cape Town airport to the Hotel which was straightforward although upon arrival to the hotel we found that the hotel car park (with spaces for about 15 cars) was full and remained full for the remainder of our stay.

If you are not lucky enough to get a car park pass from reception you will have to park on the road either in front or to the side of the hotel. This wasn’t a problem for our stay at the hotel even though we stayed over the very busy period of New Year.

The hotel itself is very well presented and the staffs were extremely polite and helpful on our arrival. We stayed in a traditional double room on the 1st floor of the hotel. The room itself was adequate in size with all the normal extra's TV, mini bar etc. The maid turns over the bed morning and night and the mini bar is re-stocked daily.

The hotel's location is situated on a busy road which overlooks a grass area and the ocean. Our room was located at the back of the hotel and although we did not get any road noise we did get some noise from the Kitchen's and the ventilation fan!!!

The hotel runs a regular transport service from the hotel to the Waterfront and other attractions on request. The food from the restaurant was excellent. Breakfast provides a choice of fruit, cereals, breads or a cooked breakfast. The restaurants bar also serves food although it is from a limited menu. The hotel's swimming pool is small but provides a nice venue if you want to catch a few rays and manage to get a sun bed.

We had a hire car so getting out and about was easy. Table Mountain was fantastic....the queues were very long and parking was a little difficult. We arrived at about 9am and the queues were already long I would suggest arriving early if possible.

We were also man enough to go Paragliding....a fantastic experience if you don’t mind a short walk up the mountain. We did our jump from Lions Head. We had a great instructor who made us feel safe and well advised on the whole procedure.

The waterfront was great for a variety of food especially seafood although booking a table was essential at this time of year.

I would research if you are planning any trips. The wine lands, Cape Point and the Seal Colony are all worth a visit if you get chance.

Over all we had a great holiday. We enjoyed Kruger more than the hustle bustle of the city but maybe that’s just us. I'm sure that if visiting you'll have a fantastic holiday and it is a good base for your stay.

1 or 2 of the guests at the hotel had break in's to their cars on the road out the front. We didn’t have a problem but make sure as always to clear any valuables from display.

Have a great trip.

We stayed at the Winchester Mansions for 7 nights in February and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The food was excellent with plenty of choice at breakfast and dinner. The accommodation was clean and comfortable.
The location was perfect as we chose an out of the city hotel with a sea front location. The courtesy transport brought us to the Waterfront in less than 10 minutes. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and would like to say thank-you to all who made our holiday so memorable.

We've just returned from a fabulous holiday in Cape Town and stayed at the Winchester Mansions the first two nights and last night of our hols.

I booked via Expedia and then followed up with the hotel directly about arranging a taxi from the airport (my husband had travelled earlier in the week as part of a conference). Their emails were very friendly and it was great as a lone female traveller to have the taxi waiting as they said it would.

Rooms were OK, when I arrived the safe didn't work but that was fixed very quickly whilst I had lunch. My first meal in the lovely courtyard was one of the best of the holiday but unfortunately the food in the restaurant the following night was slightly overcooked.

There was a very good variety of food available for breakfast, my only criticism would be that on the Sunday morning there was a queue for breakfast and we ended up having hastily arranged tables on a balcony as the courtyard was cordoned off and being set up for the jazz brunch.

I'd definately go back to this hotel, the staff were very nice though there did seem to be quite a few new staff at the time which meant a little patience at the desk, they were friendly and everything worked very well. We didn't get to use the hotel shuttle bus as it was out on other journeys when we needed it but the taxi to the V&A waterfront was very cheap (although make sure they do put on the meter as they forget and try to estimate the charge).

  • Liked — Convenience to the main tourist attractions
  • Disliked — Reception lobby was a little hectic at times

This is a Great Hotel, although it is neither trendy nor boutique.
There is a nice little indoor golf course around the corridors (with real holes, and putters on the walls - I kid you not!)
There is a delightful courtyard, with a good breakfast in the mornings (Try the salmon eggs Benedict - its yummy) although its missable in the evenings with better options nearby.
Its a LONG walk to the beach - a cab to the decent sand at Camps Bay will set you back R50.
It occasionally has conferences which can be noisy.
There is a courtersy van which will pick you up from the airport (for free - if you book through an agency phone ahead to book it) while the return to the airport is charged (R260).
There is JAzz in the courtyard on a Sunday Morning which is a must - but it books up weeks ahead - again, phone ahead BEFORE your stay to book it.
The TVs in the room get 3 German TV channels, and 2 BBC (Prime and World).

One other tip - check out the bar. For a hotel bar it is pretty snazzy and has a lovely view of the sunset over the ocean. It also has Johnnie Walker Blue for the same price as the Red - a real bargain.

We spent 3 days (husband, wife, 2 kids, mother in law) at the winchester in early january 2007. Our 3 rooms were clean, well appointed and family-friendly. Breakfast was great. Having stayed at the Cape Grace last year, I can tell you that the winchester mansions is one of the best hotels in Cape Town. It is also really good value for money. We are looking forward to visiting this place again. Special thanks to Ignatius and Stacey.
