My husband, father-in-law and I were in Cape Town for a week to attend a family wedding. We had previously stayed at a hotel close to the V&A WaterFront but were shocked at the hike in price since our stay there in 2006; our travel agent recommended Winchester Mansions (I assume so-named because it's layout is similar to a block of London mansions flats) and we're so very glad we took her advice. My father-in-law had recently had a hip operation and was not very mobile, in addition to which he suffers from glaucoma so has very poor eyesight. All the hotel staff were superb in helping him - and I mean helping, not patronising, him. A wheelchair was provided whenever he needed it and he really enjoyed chatting and joking with all the staff. We entertained family to dinner at the hotel twice and - even though the wedding was not held there - everyone was made to feel really special. It contributed a lot to the pre-nuptial excitement! In the midst of all this, my husband and I were also able to grab the odd hour here and there to relax by the pool or to walk down to the Water Front (only half an hour and very pleasant exercise.) The hotel is also ideally situated for driving down the coast to Camps Bay etc while Table Mountain, Signal Hill and even Kirstenbosch were within a reasonable drive. (We even saw a whale and her calf in the sea opposite the hotel the day we arrived!) My only regret is that the family lunch the day after the wedding meant we had to miss the Sunday Jazz session at Winchester Mansions - but what a good excuse to go back! I wouldn't even consider looking at anywhere else next time we visit - we're heading straight back to the Mansions.

This was our first visit to Cape Town and the Winchester is an excellent base for visiting all the tourist attractions in the Cape Peninsula. Our bedroom was spacious, but a little dark and the bathroom was large with bath and separate shower. The patio was a beautiful setting for breakfast. The hotel gave us complimentary tickets for the City bus tour which stopped outside and is a great way to get your bearings when you first arrive. Reception organise a courtesy transfer to the V&A in the evening, just remember to book it during the day as it can get quite busy. Reception staff will also book any other trips such as tickets for Robbin Island.

The Winchester Mansions was a reminder of how hotels should be run. We have stayed in Cape Town before in smart, large, impersonal hotels but never again! We are now number one fans of the Winchester Mansions. The staff are wonderful, friendly, helpful and always smiling. We had a lovely suite at the front of the hotel overlooking the sea which was very comfortable, well equipped and spotlessly clean. Breakfasts are excellent with a wide choice available, we ate in the centre courtyard. We did not know about the Sunday Jazz lunches before we arrived and the lunch for the following Sunday was fully booked - we will know for future! The hotel is not near the V & A but there is a shuttle bus available. We were actually quite happy to be away from the V & A and city centre, across the road from the hotel is a large grass promenade which is safe to walk along - you can walk to the V & A in one direction and to the Lido at Sea Point (and further) in the other direction. The staff managed to make the hotel seem like home from home and we definitely did not want to leave.

I loved this hotel on every level:
Convenience, from the outstanding transfer service from the Airport and Back, the close proximity to all amenities, the shuttle service to the Waterfront, the excellent restaurants, the wonderful spacious rooms. The Sunday Jazz brunches in the courtyard (sigh), the outstanding breakfasts (inclusive). Heated pool, views etc. All fabulous. But best for me is the fact that all of this was topped by the outstanding personalised service from the ever-willing and ever-helpful staff. Nothing we requested was ever refused. The staff knew and remembered our names and preferences after the first day. I thought this kind of hospitality was relegated to by-gone era...I am thrilled to be wrong. This is most definitely going to be our 'home-away-from-home' in Cape Town. The only criticism is the service can be a little slow sometime. And that is the only negative I can think of. I have nothing but the highest praise for this little Cape gem!!

Definitely, this hotel is not part of a chain. The attentiveness of the staff, from check in to check out, is excellent. The rooms are a good size, and everywhere is kept spotless. We had a room overlooking Signal Hill, which was fine. There are a number of rooms, facing onto the courtyard. Between the windows of these rooms and the courtyard, is the ' corridor ' . I don't think that it would be a problem, but we prefered being able to open our window, and have a view, with no obstructions. The breakfasts are good, with the option of buffet, or menu ordering. The dinners, are exceptional, and not expensive. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. There is a free shuttle ( people carrier ) from the hotel to the V & A Waterfront and back, which when the hotel is quiet, can be booked as and when required.
There are very little options for eating out near the hotel. We only tried the chinese, 'Tao Yuan', in the direction of Camps Bay, and cannot recommend it. The V & A is the normal place to go to eat,( over 75 places to eat and drink ) but some are quite ' touristy '. As mentioned, the dinners in the hotel are excellent, and even the bar snacks are substantial and good. Sundays' are very busy, with the jazz brunch, and some diners and families, spend the rest of the day around the pool area.
Check out is at 10.30 but can be extended to 12 noon. There is a shower room adjacent to the pool area, where we were able to change in the late afternoon, for our flight home.
I don't think we will be going back to Cape Town, but if we did, we would definitely stay at Winchester Mansions, and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. All in all, a great hotel.

My fiance and I got married at the Winchester Mansions in December last year (2009). The service from the Winchester in organising and arranging the event was impeccable. The banqueting manager and her team were wonderful to work with and did a 5-star job. Our subsequent night stay in the hotel further confirmed my feelings on the place. It is an excellent experience with top-quality service to boot. I would recommend anyone who is visiting Cape Town go stay at "the mansions". If you like staying in a venue with a colonial feel but with a splash of Continental European flair, then the Winchester is the place.
