“Nice museum to apreciate the local artists”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

It was the only art museum I've been to in my Cape Town trip, and it was a good opportunity to apreciate the contemporary and modern South African art. I had the chance to see works of art different from the ones produced in South America, where I live, and it's always great to experience new cultures!

“Eclectic Collection, Well Presented”
Reviewed September 21, 2013 via mobile

We visited the gallery on a rainy afternoon, with the intention of killing an hour or two. We stayed for more than two hours and could have stayed longer.
There was an excellent exhibition of modern African wood carving on when we visited. The pieces ranged from personal to political, with the works ranging from small, head sized pieces to huge artifices carved out of massive hunks of wood. These pieces were by turns evocative, enchanting and haunting. We were also lucky to discover that there was an audience with the artists whose work made up the collection that afternoon.

The main body of the gallery was filled with a selection of pieces grouped by theme, cutting a broad swathe across the gallery's collection. The purpose of the exhibit was to examine the collection as a changing body over time as context, fashion and trends change both in art, and in the broader world. Thus, there were provocative pieces from the 1980's next to nudes that were daring in their time; Japanese woodcuts next to Spanish religious icons. This exhibit was thoughtfully put together, and it is both interesting and enlightening.

I highly recommend a trip to the Iziko National Gallery.

“disappointing”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

I can spend hours in a good gallery. Wondering aimlessly to see what's there and returning to the ones I like over and over. This isn't one of those galleries. I was done in 15 minutes and part of that was spent wondering what I'd missed!
