A trip to Robben Island is well worth it. The tour is fully guided and it that did feel a bit restrictive but that is because there is so much history to cover. It would be great if once a day they offered a longer/more in depth tour that allowed for a deeper experience. The ferry ride is nice and if you are lucky you will see some whales and/or dolphins. The tour begins with a bus tour of the island and then you are passed on to a former political prisoner for a tour through the prison. This is what makes the experience. It is very powerful to get a first hand account of life in prison on Robben Island and to be able to ask questions. Once back on the mainland take the time to go through the museum and the boards that are by the ferry boarding area that are really informative.
