For something that holds such significance for the Sth African people and history, it is EXTREMELY poorly presented......
Sadly it proved to be one of the most I eventful and boring afternoons that we have spent in Sth Africa......
It could be presented in a much more informative and relative light that what was given.......
The boat ride over also took over an hour! And same return......
A documentary ,prior to visit, viewed in australia, was way more informative than this .......
Sadly I would AVOID, as so. Much could be learned elsewhere....and it was an afternoon sadly wasted.....

Enjoyed the trip a bit but it could have been so much better. They didn't allow us to look around the lime quarry, there are no arranged models or scenes to give extra info, vert few info boards ... in fact a big lack of useful and extra info for this attraction available on tour that could be terrific but yet is only ok.... and a lack of choice and options on the island, as if everyone has the same superficial interest...

although the regular boat was non-operable, and the boat ride took twice as long as normal, the ride was pleasant. The highlight was that a former political prisoner who was incarcerated at the same time as Nelson Mandela was our tour guide. It was a powerful yet funny tour and he was open to answer all of our questions.

We visited Robben Island as a combined family, with 6 adults, 2 children, and a 2 month old baby.

The trip itself was very informative, and interesting, and the 2 guides we had were both friendly and willing to share their stories. The boat trip to the island was OK, although I think the engines need servicing, as there was a terrible smell from a cloud of black smoke which blew into the cabin form the back deck.

The groups were also a little big in my view, especially when touring the Maximum Security Prison, they could have done with splitting the group in 2 so it isn't so crowded.

Families must note the following:

Everyone has to have a "ticket" to travel to the island. There is an adult price and then kids are charged at 120ZAR I think (almost 15USD) - now I understand the importance of everyone having a ticket, in case of emergencies, people can be accounted for. But to charge 15$ for a 2 month old baby who slept the whole trip, can't speak, and who wouldn't have been listening to the tour, I think is ridiculous.

We booked on line to save queuing (no discount for booking online - unlike table mountain), and didn't pre-book a ticket for my 2 month old daughter, as I didn't think for one minute she would need one. The staff didn't seem bothered when I had to go and buy another ticket & complained. Unfortunately, although informative, it is a bit of a "tour factory". You are just "one of the masses"

So that was a real shame and put a dampener on the whole day for us.

Interesting but not a must see. Groups are 2 big. We didn't understand our guide very well.
You should do it when you have time enough (takes more or less a 1/2 day)
