Owner description: Greenmarket Square is one of Cape town's oldest markets, full of crafts, jewelry, clothing and curios at a great value.

There was a lot on sale in Greenmarket Square, but the prices were quite steep. We saw many of the items in other markets along the Garden Route much cheaper. The neighborhood around the square was somewhat dodgy. Shopping was more fun by the Waterfront.

Nice african handicrafts in the market square cheaper than other places in capetown. Needs a lot of bargaining skills.
Good eateries around the place

We continually pass this area as we are staying close on Adderley Street. I would recommend a walk to include the Greenmarket Square. There are plenty of shops to visit; vendors with their African goods for sale; and a pleasant special market that takes place on Thursday from 11-4 pm. It is much like a farmer's market with organic products and foods; fruits and veggies; and lots of other items to enjoy. We try to go each week and have not been disappointed.

A cheerful, crowded, colourful street market with many stalls selling African crafts and other African-themed goods. I didn't find the sellers overly pushy - they are quite good-natured if you insist on just looking. It is necessary to bargain. Not at all unsafe, but be alert as in any crowded setting.

I think Greenmarket Square is definitely worth a visit although I always find it rather stressful to 'shop' there. I absolutely understand that everyone wants to sell their things but sometimes I'd just like to browse which isn't really possible; it doesn't take much longer than around 20 seconds until you'll have been offered a 'special price only for you'. But as I said, definitely worth a visit, a market with great crafts and souvenirs with loads of cute little cafés around but other places selling similar things that might be less 'stressful' :)
