Owner description: The apartheid nationalist government destroyed District Six in the 1960s. This memorial museum contains maps, photographs and other reminders of this old vibrant neighborhood. Site walks and tours in the Museum with ex-resident storytellers are also offered.

“Moving story telling in a compact space”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

Really liked this intimate museum. A bit tricky to find but well worth it. Ex residents guide you through the harrowing and somewhat senseless tale in heart felt fashion and lots of reclaimed exhibits together with evocative photographs and set piece installations combine to make for a really diverting couple of hours.

“recommended visit in understanding the changes in South Africa”
Reviewed November 29, 2012

I am not sure whether the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is the same. However, Distric Six Museum is a recommended visit to understand the history of cape Town.

“Very interesting”

Very interesting and thought provoking. We didn't get a guided tour which in retrospect would have been better as they are done by people who lived the district.

“Creatively curated”

This small museum is jam-packed with information. Absorbing it all is made easier by the interesting and varied ways in which it is presented. Highly educational AND enjoyable. Not recommended for children who can't read.

“This museum brings personal perpectives to the effects of apartheid”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

District Six ex-residents have brought their memories and mementos to this one building. The personal stories, poems and artworks tell of a time which we witnessed from thousands of miles away. Very moving.
