“Great Hotel for the Convention Centre”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2009

This is the 5th time I have stayed at the Cullinan. I always receive a warm welcome back and find the staff very thoughfull and helpfull. The hotel is downtown so not suited for the beach but for work in the CBD it is great. The rooms are fine with good bathrooms. Breakfast is great and the bar food is fine.

I always enjhy my stayt and would recommend to anyone with business downtown.

Good location adjacent to the V & A waterfront.
Excellent friendly and helpful staff.
Swimming pool suffers from traffic noise, but it was built before the intersection outside!

from the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and attentive. Our room was spotless, the bathroom luxurious. Breakfast was extensive with lovely fresh fruit and the service quick and efficient. There was transport to the waterfront every half hour until late at night although sometimes the bus would fill up quickly and not everyone would queue! We would certainly stay there again.

Great hotel with grand foyer and lovely swimming pool area. Fabulous location at the entrance to the Waterfront but close to the City gave the best of both worlds. The power shower was excellent and the rooms were always kept neat and exceedingly clean. Disappointing room service - waited 1.5 hours after being quoted 30 min and the food arrived cold and missing a side order. By the time the food was reheated, the dessert had melted so returned that for another. Time to actually eating was 2 hrs after order made. No mini bar in room but this wasn't a problem for us. An item went missing from our room during our stay and we flagged this up on departure. The reception staff, though beautifully presented, didn't seem at all bothered and could not offer any suggestions, and did not volunteer to put us in touch with the local police. Tipping is always expected and if you tip substandardly (even for something quite dreadful) the staff appeared to subtly make their displeasure known which was a little unsettling. That seems like a lot of negatives but it always seems to be the bad things a person remembers while abroad rather than the good. Despite the above, I would still recommend the hotel and consider staying again - if we managed to get a decent nightly rate.

The Southern Sun Cullinan is the "big sister" of the Southern Sun Waterfront. It is more luxurious and more posh.

My room had everything you can expect from a luxury hotel with the exception of a minibar fridge. If you want cool drinks you will have to call room service and request an ice bucket. This isn't good. I think that cold drinks should be readily available in a luxury hotel room.

Now, this is South Africa so for most west people this isn't a problem. Room service is available 24h and is by comparison to European hotels very very cheap.

My main problem was the noise from slamming doors. All room doors close automatically but they tend to do so very loudly.

Hotel has a nice pool area but a bit exposed as it is in the middle of a table area where people eat and drink. Seems to be mostly for kids.

Staff was wonderful and did the outmost to accomodate every request I had. Valet parking worked like a charm. Just call 20 min before you need your car and it's parked and ready outside the entrance.

A very nice hotel, the posher variant of Southern Sun Waterfront that is just nearby. I will soon have a review of that hotel also as I stayed in it just before this.

  • Liked — Location and the charming staff

Google "waterfront hotels" and the Cullinan is not initially presented. The location, which is just outside the entrance to the Waterfront, is easy and convenient. As other reviews have stated, it can be traffic noisy when sitting at the pool area and also in the lower rooms when the windows are open (simple solution - close the windows and use the airconditioning which is very efficient). The benefits of the location far outweigh the noise factor mentioned - the main benefit being the easy access to all of Cape Town without enduring the relentless traffic into and out of the Waterfront where it is always busy (and everyone seems to be looking for parking).

The staff should be complimented as they were always hospitable and went out of their way to be helpful. We rather loved the valet parking service as we'd drive up to the hotel and hand over the keys, calling the concierge again when we wanted to leave - we never had to worry about the parking situation.

The room was a good size with a fantastic shower. The bed (which is the most important thing for me in a hotel room as I love my comforts) was so inviting with a gorgeous comfy duvet (which the hotel sells if you love it that much!).

We rather surprised ourselves by thinking the breakfast (during which you want for nothing) was excellent value at R125 when compared to the fillet steak offering at the restaurants at the Waterfront which averaged R140-R160. The prices are inflated but there is a premium to pay for the setting and facilities.

It's easy to get to the Waterfront. The hotel offers a shuttle costing R15 per person per trip. We tested the taxis - the ones from outside the hotel are great; the others for the return are dodgy and cost more. Our vote for safety and convenience would go to the hotel shuttle.

The Cullinan is a great choice of hotel when visiting Cape Town. If you can stay a Saturday night, the price is more affordable and there's no need to take out a loan to be close to the Waterfront.
