Stayed for a couple of weeks on business although this is more a tourist hotel with many groups moving in and out during my stay, sometimes at strange times. The soundproofing of the bedroom doors is not great and there could be a lot of noise from down the corridor. It would also help if the bedroom doors closed properly rather than having to be slammed shut.

The hotel is well located within easy walking distance of the Waterfront with its myriad restaurants, shops etc and of the promenade by the sea. You would need a taxi if you wished to go much further. The overall area is pretty safe.

The staff were very friendly and always helpful. However, some of house keeping staff seemed to ignore the hotel's encouragement to guests to protect the environment. More than once I returned from a day's work to find the bedroom window open (as I left it) and the air-conditioning on (which I had left switched off).

As others have commented the buffet breakfast is excellent and a very good way to start the day.

Loved the hotel & staff. Very friendly & helpful. Located close to the harbor & several good restaurant choice. Good breakfast Buffett & as we had to leave early & before the restaurant opening on the last day, they packed a nice breakfast to go. Only two minor knocks. There isn't a good view, but more than offset by the close proximity to the harbor. The second, there was interior construction noise close to our room during the day whence were trying to take much needed naps.probably a temporary thing so we'd stay there again.

Very nice hotel in a good safe location. The service is really good; all the staff are super friendly, pleasant and attentive.

The breakfast buffer is the jewel in the crown; bowls of fresh fruit, yoghurt and the sausages are to die for.

Decent gym and close to the promenade if you fancy a run.

The service at hotel was some of the best I have experienced. The travel desk went out of their way to make sure my husband and I could see the Cape of Good Hope in the limited amount of time we had one day. Every detail was accounted for and every one was very friendly. In addition to the service the rooms were spotless with amazing views and the location is second to none, being right by the waterfront. We would recommend this hotel to any of our friends!

Room Tip: Ask for a view of table mountain! Rooms are not the "trendiest" but have a nautical theme...

When it comes to Audio Visual one often experiences headaches - especially when it is a last minute requests with doctors for a conference.

This morning we had such a request for a projector - and within ten minutes Jeremy and his staff had us all sorted out. I've been in this game for 15 years and seldomly get this kind of service. Friendly, fast, proffesional and gracious.

So thanks very much Jeremy -you saved the day!

Kind regards

Big hotel, situated just at the V&A waterfront, lively center, 5 minutes’ walk from 'den anker' – Belgian restaurant and beer bar… but be sure to check out Long Street, if you’re looking for a good night out.
super helpful, friendly staff. rooms somehow dated but good value for money

On the plus side the Commodore Hotel (and it's owned-by-the-same-group neighbour the Portswood Hotel) are well located an easy walk away from Capetowns Waterfront. The Commodore goes for a nautical theme in its common rooms and pretty much gets away with it. There's a pleasant bar serving locally brewed beer (which isn't as common as you'd expect in Capetown hotels) and a reasonable restaurant although the latter lacks a bit of ambiance. Perhaps the nicest part of the hotel is the centre courtyard garden near the pool which is great for breakfast or an evening drink. There's also a fair gym with one of each of a number of machines and a set of free weights.

Where the hotel falls down though, at least based on my experience of the 5th floor, is the rooms. They feel very dated and the carpet and fittings are significantly worn in places. The furniture was functional but again quite old. The whole floor smelt of smoke when I arrived and my [non-smoking] room was worse. It turned out the smell was from the curtains which open on to a small balcony and which a succession of guests had obviously enjoyed a few thousand cigarettes the smoke from which was absorbed by the curtains. To be fair the hotel did provide an air freshening device for me but they really need to dry clean the curtains to really address the problem.

The air conditioning is of the American "individual in room unit" kind. Once the staff got mine to work it did its job but these machines are noisy and not a good choice if you're a light sleeper.

Finally this hotel is amazingly popular with large groups which can change the atmosphere in an instant and something to be aware of. It is well located but not a hotel that I'm ever going to consider a favourite.
