Cape Town Lodge
Ranked #79 of 112 Hotels in Cape Town Central
Reviewed November 9, 2010

I stayed at Cape Town Lodge for 5 nights in November, booked on the internet for about $100/night including breakfast. I was very pleased with the hotel, it does all that it promises and more. The room was quite spacious, bed comfortable, absolutely no quibbles. I had a room on the 7th floor with a clear view of Table Mountain, so that was a real bonus.

Breakfast is fine, a bit more variety would be good. One of my colleagues used the gym every day and was pleased with it. The restaurant in the hotel is good, prices are reasonable. The bar area is small, but OK, and anyway there are lots of restaurants and bars in Long Street, less than 5 minutes walk away. Check-out was straightforward.

The one annoyance is the internet pricing. It costs R70 ($10) for 40 MB, which you can use up quite quickly, and it would cost a fortune for anyone who needs to use the internet intensively. I noticed quite a few people ask about internet and then decline to use it at that price. I wonder whether the hotel makes any significant income from this, and whether the few they capture is worth the negative impression of an otherwise really good place? There are internet cafes nearby, for example on the corner of Bloem and Long Street (turn left out the door, then 3rd left down the hill to Long Street), about R20 ($3) per hour. On the way you pass Jardine's on the corner of Bree that does excellent rolls/wraps/sandwiches and which seems to be an institution in Cape Town.

The hotel is a reasonable walk from Long Street and the City Centre, but you would probably need to take a cab to the V&A Waterfront, about R40 ($5). The Red city sightseeing bus passes the hotel, it's about two hours tour but you can hop-on/hop-off. I would recommend it as a very good intro to Cape Town city and surrounds.

If I'm back in Cape Town, I would stay there again.

We spent 3 nights at Cape town Lodge Hotel - the experience was wonderful to say the least.
The decor is warm and inviting - one can see that the hotel has been recently redone - great job!
The staff are very friendly & attentive - Cindi - the general manager is a gem!
The breakfast buffet is definately 5 star quality.
We booked a STANDARD room as the rate was extremely competive, although smaller than the other rooms, it was comfortable - the flat screen TV is a bit large for the room though.

Having previously stayed in another 4* hotel nearby this hotel did not compare favourably. We had only booked a standard room I know but it was tiny with very limited storage space and no view at all. Breakfast room only had high level windows and the tables were cleared quickly enough so we had to wait to sit down. Food choice was okay and the piano player a nice touch. Staff - mixed. Reception staff were good and helpful, one barman very good and one just plonking a bottle on the counter top when asked for a beer. Bar itself very well presented and reasonable.
Bed seemed small compared to others we had on our trip. Place was very clean though.
Overall okay for an overnight, functional stay or book a superior room.

We stayed 6 nights to Cape Town Lodge being to Cape Town for a congress. The room – not a big size - was clean, with a good size bathroom, even if without views of Table Mountain. Acceptable breakfast with good quality fruit & food. The Butchers steak restaurant is a top class restaurant that I definitely recommend. The staff was always polite and helpful.
The Cape Town Lodge provides good value for money in a central Cape Town position. The position is good for Long Street, the red & blue bus route. We walked to the Convention Center in less than half an hour, to V&A in approx 40 min, 10 min to Green Market, safe during the day.
My only complaint is about the internet connection: expensive with poor signal.
I would recommend this as a base for Cape Town.

Although I was thinking about an oceam view hotel when i was planning for my 2 months bussiness trip to cape town but I knew I made the right decision from the timw I entered the hotel lobby, staff are very friendly. I stayed in a loft apartment in the 9th floor for 2 months and I really enjoyed my stay a lot.
Very close to all cape town attractions, just 5 min walk to long street, about 3 km to Table Mountain and about 2 km to Waterfront.
Breakfast buffet was very nice but for a long stay you will get bored. The hotel manager Cindy was checking if I have any concerns or complains almost on a daily basis and all duty managers were very helpful.
I knew their steak restaurants is one of the best in Cape Town althoug I have not tried because it was not Halaal meat.
My apartment was well organized with a small kitchen (no cooking allowed), fridge, microwave and the bathroom is very nice.
The bedroom was very nice and the living area was great with 42' LCD TV and a very comfortable sofa, also I had a panormaic view of Table Mountain and long street.
Just avoid staying close to the parking lifts as lot of noise comes from it, also the laundry prices are very expensive.
The Gym in the 3rd floor is well equiped with you want and both Gym and rooms are safe since you use the room safe!
Do no expect swimming pool, it's just 2*3 tube, parking costs 60 ZAR/nt and taxi from airport to hotel costs about 240 ZAR
Of course will go back again and I do recommend it to everyone.

The location is great & breakfasts fairly good (except for the pastries - which are terrible), but as a 4* is compares poorly – it’s more suitable as a 2* or 3*.

Room: The room was about 28m2 - cheap motels are often larger. Almost no cupboards. Bathroom was smoky. The bed – though basic - was comfortable, but this isn’t a room you’d do anything in but sleep. Rooms are also poorly sound-proofed so you may wake up from your neighbours.

Service - shocking: if you forward a complaint to management you expect them to get back to you

Parking: You'll need to pay R60 per day (which isn't forthcoming until you get there or have already paid). Worse it it's not all accessible - you have to walk down an outside ramp in the rain.

Pool: Closed...

Generally: A poor renovation with slow lifts. I’d recommend a backpackers over this.
