As a group of 4 adults we stayed here for the last 2 nights of a fortnight's holiday in South Africa. Our ground floor 2-bedroomed suite was really only suitable for 2 adults + 2 children rather than adults - as the second bedroom had a curtained hatch to the kitchenette area and the corridor/bedroom wall finished a foot or so from the ceiling. The suite was also quite 'tired' and had a strange smell - which we were never able to pinpoint.

That all said, the staff were extremely courteous and helpful in assisting us with requests that we made.

The location is pretty spectacular and the hotel is a taxi ride away from the Waterfront. We were only successful once in using the shuttle - it was always busy and usually meant a wait of anything up to 2 hours - which was not particulary useful for us. Solution - book early!

Given that we were distinctly unimpressed with our accommodation at first (we had previously stayed in some pretty cool establishments) we did actually enjoy our short stay - as noted in the heading it is the helpful staff who make this hotel worth considering. We were also able to arrange a late check out with no problem before our overnight flight back to the UK - which was a godsend.

The location of this hotel is great if you have a car (they have a shuttle but we found it much more convenient to rent a car - parking in Cape Town garages is cheap) - only 10 min into Cape Town and close to Camps Bay and other towns in the other direction. All of the rooms face the ocean, which is nice. I have to say that based on the reviews I read, I expected it to be a bit nicer than it was. It was perfectly clean and in good condition, breakfast was good and the service was gracious, but the room was dated in terms of the look of furnishings, bathrooms, etc. I understand that one side of the hotel is newer, but those might be the condos, and the other side is older - we were on the older side. The suite didn't feel all that spacious because it had a separate bedroom and kitchen/small sitting area that we didn't use at all. Other rooms we peeked in on were one large space without division and looked a little nicer. In the end, it didn't matter because we didn't spend much time in our room. It was a decent rate and a decent hotel and served our needs well. Oh, and the pool is tiny - not really good for swimming but makes the poolside restaurant a bit nicer.

We stayed at the Peninsula on a time-share exchange. We'd normally avoid such 'tower block' type hotels, but this was great! Being right on the sea front we spent much time looking out to sea over crashing waves and a couple of beautiful sunsets. The Peninsula is an excellent base from which to explore the Cape region. Most staff appeared most courteous and helpful.

Our unit was equipped to a very good standard, with everything needed for self-catering, although we used the restaurants in and around the hotel. The restaurant provides excellent meals, although the menu is rather limited. If regularly having breakfast inhouse, it's worth getting one of their breakfast packages (Continental or full English). They provide a very acceptable free meal for it's time-share guests, one evening a week.

We'd highly recommend the Casa Nostra Italian Restaurant, a short walk from the hotel. A small friendly, family run restaurant, out to please it's clientele. Lovely food, very reasonably priced. For a special treat try the La Perla, on the sea front and again within walking distance of the hotel.

The hotel pools (indoor and outdoor) are small and the gym was rather ''run-down'.

The tourist assistant was extremely helpful, advising on places to visit and how to get there.

Best attractions
Must visit Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, and Boulders (penguin colony) on the way. Boulders Beach Lodge was great for breakfast.
Spiers Vineyard ... wine tasting, bird of prey centre (excellent interactive display) and cheetah centre
Lion's Head ... a challenging walk to the top but well worth it. We did this as the Table Mountain cable car was closed for maintenance, but were delighted we did. Great views from the top.
If planning to go to Robbin Island (Nelson Mandela was imprisoned here), book well in advance. Unfortunately, our trip was cancelled due to a very heavy swell, and there were no vacancies on the following dates.
The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is good to wander around. (though it is tourist focussed and hence prices reflect this). The blue and white building in the centre is a must visit ... full of ancient African artefacts for sale. But great just to look around.
Go to Hermanus and take a Whale Watching trip. Expensive, but worth it if you can catch the whales 'breaching'.

The views along the coastal roads to and from Cape Point are spectacular, especially along the West Coast at Sunset. (Though Chapman's Point road has been closed for some time .. re-opening date not known)

Given the opportunity, we'd have no hesitation in staying at The Peninsula again.

Stayed here for a couple of nights during our two week holiday to South Africa (western and eastern Capes) in November 2009.

Lobby is a bit dated, but very well maintained. This is a theme throughout the hotel. Although the suite we stayed in was even more dated.

We had a suite on the second floor. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, open plan lounge and kitchen area, large balcony with table and chairs and sun loungers - lovely ocean views. Very dated though. Although it was very clean and well maintained it is crying out for an update!

Request a room on a higher floor if you want to watch the sunset from your balcony - you miss the last bit on the lower floors (houses off to the left, where the sun actually sets). Of course, a short walk across the road to the front or a short drive to Camps Bay would also resolve this).

Breakfast was nothing more than OK.

Staff throughout the hotel were very good though.

Excellent shuttle service provided by the hotel. Will take you anywhere in the Cape Town area free of charge - up to about 10.30/11.00 at night. We used this on both nights when we ate out. Good, friendly driver - tipped for each trip.

All units at The Peninsula overlook the Atlantic Ocean and have beautiful views. Our condo was comfortable, the master bedroom was spacious, and we enjoyed dining on our balcony overlooking the ocean each morning. The location is within an easy walk of two grocery stores and several restaurants. The Peninsula offers complimentary shuttle within 8 kms of the resort which includes the V&A Waterfront, Table Mtn., and the central business district in Cape Town. We took advantage of the shuttle service on several occasions and were thoroughly pleased with the service. In addition, the staff arranged for transportation to/from the airport/resort (for a set fee), and we were promptly greeted at the airport. The resort staff was friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our week at The Peninsula.

This was our second time at the Peninsula hotel. Staff were still friendly and breakfast was wonderful. On our first trip we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite with a hot tub without asking, no such luck on this trip. Our one bedroom regular suite was still sufficient. The only issue I had was that I asked for a late check out the night before and was told that there would be an hourly charge, even though the literature in the room clearly stated there would be no charge with advance notice. I thought the night before was sufficient notice, and the duty manager however resolved that issue at no cost to me.
We will be returning to Cape Town soon and plan on staying again at the Peninsula.
