We had a corner room on the top floor, a deluxe room, with great view of Table Mountain. A bit of a walk to the waterfront, but close enough to take in the sunsets. Felt very safe. The room had a great tub in it. We enjoyed the restaurant, found the service very good and the staff friendly. Not the fanciest, but nice.

Room Tip: top floor, corner unit

Excellent small hotel a short walk from the pier with shops, restaurants and the ferry to Robben Island, the island prison for anti-apartheid activists (including Nelson Mandela). Stayed one night in transit to Johannesburg. The staff is friendly, helpful and responsive. The rooms clean and comfortable. The free Wi-Fi signal is strong. Check-in and out was easy. The hotel restaurant is excellent. The breakfast buffet offers a great spread. I would definitely stay again.

I stayed at the hotel 3 nights for work.
The location was good, just a few flights of stairs above the V & A waterfront. V & A was completely safe and short 5 minute walk to hotel had security at regular locations.
The hotel itself was a little bit of a contrast. The rooms were quite modern and the bed was very comfortable. The common areas were quite dated and seemed to have an exposed brick, dark wood old world nautical theme. I guess it was based on the location but just seemed a bit dark and dated. The breakfast was good, full hot breakfast and cold cuts with fruit too.
The staff were very helpful.
Wifi was very good.

Husband & I stayed at The Portswood for 5 nights at the beginning of May and we couldn't have asked for a better hotel to introduce us to Cape Town and South Africa. The location was excellent, five mins walk from the V&A, which we felt perfectly comfortable walking to & from at night regardless of other reviewers opinion. The room was beautiful, we had one of the suites on the 3rd floor, it was a good size for the location of the hotel we thought and the bed was awesome, had the best nights sleep! The staff were very friendly, especially the evening bar staff were we would have a drink on our return before heading to bed. So sorry I wanted to mention the lady behind the bar by name but I did not write it down and now cannot remember but she was great, remembered what we were drinking when we came in, even though we only had one or two and was so friendly and pleasant to chat to. Would most definitely stay there again if we return to Cape Town.
