My daughter and I stayed at the the PortsWood for four days as part of a post-convention tour to Capetown following an international convention in Johannesburg. We liked everything about our stay - from the top-hatted doorman who greeted us with ,"Welcome home" each time we came in, to the sumptuous breakfasts in the dark, clubby dining room.
Our room was good sized and well-appointed, with a very comfortable bed. Our room overlooked the front entry, but because the PortsWood is actually inside a larger surrounding building, we were not bothered by traffic noise at all.
The hotel is very convenient to the V&A wharf, with it's plethora of shops and restaurants. It was far too easy to find all kinds of wonderful things to bring home with us!

Our recent 9-night stay at the Portswood was too short! We liked everything about it: the staff, facilities, food and how it was run. The food was very good from the breakfast selection to the quality of the dinner menu offerings. The cleanliness was faultless. Topping off everything were staff membes who were, overall, probably the best and with the most helpful attitudes we have experienced. Then there is Joseph, the Head Doorman: what a character and what an asset to the hotel. He was always welcoming and cheerful whenever we left or came back. If his bosses could clone him and sell replicas to other hotels around the world they would make a fortune.
Overall, a lovely stay and we would love to visit again.

The PortsWood is a perfectly nice hotel. Nothing hugely special, but clean, safe and comfortable. 1/2 block off the V&A Waterfront, which is a big plus if you want bars, restaurants and quite a bit of atmosphere around you. You can wander around this area without any anxiety about your security. From my fourth floor room I had a view down to the water, but from lower floors I doubt that's the case. Good breakfast buffet (great fruit selection, eggs, pastries, etc) included in a pleasant breakfast room; it wasn't warm enough when I was there, but if it were there are courtyard tables. Small pool, but looked pleasant (again, too cold to try it out). If you want to use a gym, there is free access to the facilities of the Commodore, which is the PortsWood's slightly more upscale sister - it has a treadmill, bicycle etc. Note - Hotels.com had a rate much lower than that offered on the hotel website, and my travel agent at the office got something even cheaper, scarcely more than half the rack rate. So shop about a bit before you book.

Room Tip: Fourth (top) floor rooms have a view down to the harbor.

We stayed 4 nights on a business trip. Arrived early and were allowed to book in and left late and were allowed to stay in our room until midday. Staff welcoming, friendly and service orientated. Close to city centre, Waterfront and Atlantic sea board restaurants and beaches.

nice hotel though rather unfriendly to wheelchair guests. Staying there for two days with friends in wheelchairs... no way could we move into the restaurant are ...there is a ramp but looks more like a skying sloperamp.. steep enough to scare a walking guest let alone a 83 yera old wheelchair guest...rather annoying that we had to take breakfast , lunch and dinner either in the room or at the hotel opposit..

Room Tip: go to the commodore hotel opposite if you have mobility problems

We stayed here for 5 nights and were not disappointed. We checked in early and were allowed to go to our room when we arrived. The service was always great- all the staff were very polite and welcoming. Breakfast was really good- plenty of options. Great location- only a couple of minutes from the waterfront.

My husband and I stayed at the Portswood for 5 nights in September 2012
Our travel Agent booked this Hotel for us. We did take a quick preview of it via google before we left and we were not disappointed.
We found all staff to be be very courteous. Kelly on the front Desk is a real treasure!!! A smile to light up your day always.
Joesph at the front door made arriving just like coming home each time we came through the door.
On arrival we had twin beds. (9 pm at night) so a bit late to remedy then.
This was fixed the next day with I am sure an upgrade for the next 4 nights this was most appreciated!!! Large corner room and Bed!!! Thank you!
The tour desk organised a wineland trip for us at 9.55 pm one night with pick up for the next morning ( nothing was too much trouble)
My husband really enjoyed the Malay Curry during evening dining one night, again with great service.
It was very nice to feel so safe walking to the waterfront for dinner each night
We had a lovely stay and would recommend this Hotel to Others
