I occupied room 207 at the PortsWood Hotel; a small but nicely furnished room.

The layout was the standard hotel room. The bathroom was located on the right hand side of a small entrance hall, wardrobe on the left, with the bedroom beyond the entrance area.

The bathroom had white tiles with blue border tile trim, with white basin set into a blue laminate vanity top. A bath with shower over and WC completed the fittings. The lighting in the bathroom was cold fluorescent type (very unflattering). There was plenty of hot water, but the towels were very harsh.

The wardrobe comprised hanging space and three shelves: one of these was taken up with a personal safe and one with laundry list, laundry bags etc.

The twin beds had white duvets with a blue bed throw, with one bedside table between the beds, where a telephone and note pad were located. A clock was not provided in the room.

The bed linen was good quality and the pillows very comfortable. A turn down service in the evening was provided.

The desk area included kettle, coffee, tea, mugs etc., with a mirror over the desk.
There was also a cabinet with TV on top of it. The cabinet had glass shelves and was stocked with drinking glasses. Free wi-fi is provided throughout the hotel.

The décor was completed with nautical prints and the carpet blue patterned.

The PortsWood is located three minutes walk away from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, accessed through a public car park and across a street. Guests are safe to walk to the V & A.

The staff at the PortsWood were excellent: friendly, welcoming and efficient. The housekeeping staff and the young woman on the Tour desk are particularly worthy of mention.

Breakfast is served in the Quarterdeck Restaurant. High quality china and cutlery is evident and the tables beautifully set. The maritime theme continues in the restaurant (as it does throughout the hotel) and the walls are adorned with fascinating dinner menus from ocean going liners that operated in the past to and from Cape Town.

In South Africa breakfast is often a highlight, but not so at the PortsWood. The food was very ordinary and the hot food was always cold. (The lids of the bain-maries were standing open most of the time.) Several members of the kitchen brigade were positioned in the Restaurant every morning, but they didn’t appear to be doing any work. No cooking stations for omelets etc were evident. There was no sign of a toaster and the croissants were cold. After the first day I opted for the continental breakfast, which was reasonably good.

Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the PortsWood and it is my intention to stay again on my next visit to South Africa.

I stayed here as part of a group reservation for 3 nights. The strengths of this hotel lie in its location and proximity to the V&A Waterfront along with its excellent service. Literally next to the V&A, if you want to be close to the action, look no further. The hotel also has a decent gym located in the adjacent Commodore Hotel.

However, the rooms are old-fashioned which is nice if that's your thing, but I didn't think very much of it. The bathrooms need some updates and the bed comfort is just average. Wireless internet is intermittent or non-functional at times which can be frustruating. The breakfast is okay, could have some more variety but service at the hotel is friendly and good. It does seem to be quite pricey; if I had a choice I would book somewhere else for better value and more updated rooms.

The Portswood Hotel is very short walking distance to the V&A waterfront in Cape Town. We were welcomed by staff after a long international flight and were allowed to check in early. The room was quiet and comfortable. The lobby staff and travel desk were friendly and attentive, helping us to arrange a tour and also warning us to be vigilant if we walked around after dark. The breakfast buffet was generous with both hot and cold choices, and you could always opt for a more formal breakfast or sit outside near the pool. The V&A area is features many restaurants and a large shopping mall. There are banks and AmEx to exchange travelers' checks for cash very close by. We were so impressed by the consideration of the housekeeping staff, who rapidly brought anything we requested. The internet was wireless and slowed down at times, but when in such a stimulating and scenic environment, time to exit cyberspace.

Over priced. Our experience was that the rooms were small and dated though the staff were friendly and the breakfast was nice. I’m not sure why people keep saying the V&A is the place to be – especially as the food seems to be a lower quality and higher price for tourists. The best places were a car drive away so better stay in a nice boutique for less as this hotel is not cheap.

A Great little hotel within 2 minutes walk of the Cape Town Waterfront. Been there many times and have always found it clean and efficient. Restaurant gives great food for dinner - one of the best Cape Malay restaurant in town.
Breakfast used to be one of the best anywhere but have had a couple of issues on recent trips, hopefully this will go back to its best.
Would recommend to anyone .
Beware the speed of the internet in the hotel! - a tad slow

Room Tip: Internet is free but not high speed. Avoid rooms on the first floor over reception because of the outside noise from cars etc
