“Magnificent!”
Reviewed August 15, 2009

There is only one word for this hotel and that is 'magnificent'. It is magnificent in its decor, its grounds and also in its location at the foot of Table Mountain. It is also magnificent in the way it manages to give such wonderful personal service and provide such an intimate ambience for its guests when, let's face it, it is a very big hotel.

We had a luxury suite which comprosed of a huge sitting room, beautiful bedroom and terrific bathroom with gorgeous toiletries and big fluffy towels and robes. We even had our own private patio leading from the bedroom, and a private porch and garden to the front.

The food in the Cape Colony restaurant is truly excellent and even if you do only once you must experience tea (be prepared not to be able to eat dinner). We also indulged in the bar food with was also extremely good.

This is a hotel steeped in tradition and history. If you go to the library area and corridor in the main hotel you can see wonderful prints which tell the story of the hotel. My one criticism would be that the Mount Nelson does not produce a glossy, illustrated, 'coffee table' book promoting its pedigree! (We did actually speak to the management about this during our stay.)

The gift shops are excellent too!

From this hotel we visited the V&A Waterfront several times (you have to drive there); visited the Winelands and drove down to Cape Point, taking in all the sights along the way, including the adorable penguins at Boulders Beach.

This is such a nice hotel, even though it looks stuffy from the outside.

The gardens and grounds are beautiful. The staff are just perfect, and the location is bang on.

I know SA has it's massive problems but if you can accept the terrible gulf between rich and poor then you can enjoy it.

You have to be careful out on the streets and even up the mountain it can be bandit country.

The Mount Nelson was a wonderful hotel. It was our anniversary weekend and the staff went out of their way to make it a really special experience for us. The airport pickup was very convenient, and the free upgrade and champagne waiting in the room was amazing. The rooms are gorgeous- the beds are really comfortable, the decor is really nice, and the bathrooms are spacious and very modern. The location is great- it's a quick taxi ride anywhere in the city. The hotel restaurant was the best food we had during our stay- the salmon was incredible. The breakfast was delicious, and the high tea was a really fun experience. The concierge was extremely helpful, as was the entire staff. I sincerely hope we can come back to this hotel- it was absolutely incredible.

We spent 4 nights at the end of our South African honeymoon at the Mount Nelson. As honeymooners we were upgraded to a suite and welcomed with sparkling wine and fruit in our room. Our suite was lovely and the general decor in this very grand old hotel is very olde world with lots of sparkly mirrors, glass and crystals. It felt very clean throughout and the housekeeping team were very good, we were not disturbed by them at all. The outstanding 'feature' for us here was the staff, very friendly yet very professional, nothing was too much trouble. We were addressed by name everytime we entered the hotel. The concierge team particularly Byron were outstanding. Leon was charming and everyone we encountered was superb. The Planet bar was very cool and trendy yet relaxed and dinner in the Cape Colony restaurant was lovely. We experienced the famous afternoon tea on our last day and it was fantastic. The car we had pre-booked to take us to the airport was held up in traffic so we were offered the hotel car to take us instead at no extra cost, wonderful service. With the exchange rate working in our favour this was an easily affordable luxury hotel and we will be back.

This is the marketing campaign for this top line hotel. How true it really is! Though clearly elegant and first-class, the guest is made to feel at home and as comfortable as possible. Quite an impressive feat for a 5-star hotel. Every person with whom I interacted including the hotel engineer helping me with a malfunctioning camera battery charger, greeted me with a smile. The setting and grounds of the Mount Nelson near the foot of Table Mountain are spectacular. The rooms and public areas exude an elegant ambience reminiscent of colonial times and a certain class not readily noted at most "big city hotels". Our dinner at the hotel restaurant was our best dining experience in the city and the afternoon tea did not disappoint.

We stayed at the Mount Nelson for the last night of our trip to South Africa. The service was exceptional and the staff were attentive without being obsequious. We had dinner in the Cape Colony Resaturant and the food was excellent and prices reasonable for a hotel of this calibre. Afternoon tea was an extremely pleasant pre flight experience. Afternoon tea purists would probably have a problem with it being a buffet- but it is the nicest buffet I've ever been to, and the tea list was excellent (and no tea bags!)

At 3000 rand a night its not a budget option, but good value all the same.
