There is only one word for this hotel and that is 'magnificent'. It is magnificent in its decor, its grounds and also in its location at the foot of Table Mountain. It is also magnificent in the way it manages to give such wonderful personal service and provide such an intimate ambience for its guests when, let's face it, it is a very big hotel.
We had a luxury suite which comprosed of a huge sitting room, beautiful bedroom and terrific bathroom with gorgeous toiletries and big fluffy towels and robes. We even had our own private patio leading from the bedroom, and a private porch and garden to the front.
The food in the Cape Colony restaurant is truly excellent and even if you do only once you must experience tea (be prepared not to be able to eat dinner). We also indulged in the bar food with was also extremely good.
This is a hotel steeped in tradition and history. If you go to the library area and corridor in the main hotel you can see wonderful prints which tell the story of the hotel. My one criticism would be that the Mount Nelson does not produce a glossy, illustrated, 'coffee table' book promoting its pedigree! (We did actually speak to the management about this during our stay.)
The gift shops are excellent too!
From this hotel we visited the V&A Waterfront several times (you have to drive there); visited the Winelands and drove down to Cape Point, taking in all the sights along the way, including the adorable penguins at Boulders Beach.
