“Outstanding service”
Reviewed July 31, 2009

We spent 4 nights at the end of our South African honeymoon at the Mount Nelson. As honeymooners we were upgraded to a suite and welcomed with sparkling wine and fruit in our room. Our suite was lovely and the general decor in this very grand old hotel is very olde world with lots of sparkly mirrors, glass and crystals. It felt very clean throughout and the housekeeping team were very good, we were not disturbed by them at all. The outstanding 'feature' for us here was the staff, very friendly yet very professional, nothing was too much trouble. We were addressed by name everytime we entered the hotel. The concierge team particularly Byron were outstanding. Leon was charming and everyone we encountered was superb. The Planet bar was very cool and trendy yet relaxed and dinner in the Cape Colony restaurant was lovely. We experienced the famous afternoon tea on our last day and it was fantastic. The car we had pre-booked to take us to the airport was held up in traffic so we were offered the hotel car to take us instead at no extra cost, wonderful service. With the exchange rate working in our favour this was an easily affordable luxury hotel and we will be back.

An amazing start to our honeymoon. On arrival found to be upgraded to delux suite! Staff could not be more attentive and genually remembered our names. Pity some days of rain but cant control that one.

  • Liked — Staff attentivness
  • Disliked — Distance to local amenities.

This is the marketing campaign for this top line hotel. How true it really is! Though clearly elegant and first-class, the guest is made to feel at home and as comfortable as possible. Quite an impressive feat for a 5-star hotel. Every person with whom I interacted including the hotel engineer helping me with a malfunctioning camera battery charger, greeted me with a smile. The setting and grounds of the Mount Nelson near the foot of Table Mountain are spectacular. The rooms and public areas exude an elegant ambience reminiscent of colonial times and a certain class not readily noted at most "big city hotels". Our dinner at the hotel restaurant was our best dining experience in the city and the afternoon tea did not disappoint.

We stayed at the Mount Nelson for the last night of our trip to South Africa. The service was exceptional and the staff were attentive without being obsequious. We had dinner in the Cape Colony Resaturant and the food was excellent and prices reasonable for a hotel of this calibre. Afternoon tea was an extremely pleasant pre flight experience. Afternoon tea purists would probably have a problem with it being a buffet- but it is the nicest buffet I've ever been to, and the tea list was excellent (and no tea bags!)

At 3000 rand a night its not a budget option, but good value all the same.

I really hope I can sum up my experience at the Mount Nelson Hotel in mere words, because it was magical and wonderous and exceptional just to put in a few words. I stayed there over the course of 3 months from Feb to May 2009. I have never felt so welcomed and "at home" ever in a hotel. I travel a lot and get to stay in some very nice hotels, but I have never felt so at ease and comfortable away from my home. The staff, I believe, is what makes this place so great, although the hotel and grounds are impeccable, it is from your first greeting that you know you are in some place special. The front desk staff are welcoming and friendly and very knowledgeable. The rooms are very well appointed and very quiet and has everything you would need for a short or long stay. The staff at the Oasis restaurant and Planet Bar are second to none. From the first morning complimentary breakfast to dinners and drinks at the bar at night, every attention to detail is taken care of. The staff instantly knows your likes and dislikes and things are always the way you like or want them. The ladies, and gentlemen, greet you with great big smiles and real joy in seeing you every morning! The chefs and food are amazing as well as the view from the restaurant. The Concierge staff is also at the top of their game and no task is too great for them. The bell staff are also courteous and always smile and greet you by name. I have been away from the Mount Nelson for 2 months now and miss it very much, I am trying to figure out when I can return and see all my good old friends there.......

We were privileged to stay for 9 nights at this Classic hotel over Easter and enjoyed every minute of it! From the special welcome to the beautiful suite (an upgrade) the gardens, the breakfast, the pool area – everything was perfect!. The staff were exceptional. Special mention to Elise (Reception), Phineaus and Leon (Front Door) and Katie (Breakfast Restaurant).
However the “ star” of the hotel was Byron – by miles the best concierge of any hotel we have stayed in. His recommendations and style were faultless – the Mount Nelson should treasure him!

Beautiful Pool & Poolside Area. Beautiful Spa. A very 'old money' hotel.
Service was average for what we had been told to expect from this hotel. We were fortunate as we were attending a wedding during our stay and so got a substantial discount off our room rate because of this. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been worth the money paid.
The wedding was beautifully done and it is a really beautiful setting at the foot of the Mount Nelson.
All in all a very pleasant three night stay.
