“Beautifully furnished rooms”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

I have stayed several times at the Mount Nelson, and have found all the rooms spacious, elegant and individually furnished. This hotel deserves its fame. The service is always friendly and prompt, and the ambience of the hotel is attractive with a real vibe to it. It seems that every member of staff is conscious of the hotel's status and takes a pride in working there.

The ritual of the afternoon tea is a showpiece, especially if you are served by Sidney. And though I have not experienced the morning version it is worth pointing out that this also exists, as I learned on my most recent visit.

But most of all, I want to praise the quality of the Planet restaurant. We went for a wine and dine dinner, and were delighted with the quality of cooking and presentation of the food. Every dish offers a variety of flavours and textures to delight the palate. This is one of the best two restaurants I have dined at in South Africa. The service is impeccable; you are properly greeted as soon as you enter; and the sommelier is friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful - not a trace of hauteur.

Room Tip: They are all good rooms, it seems to me.

Think gorgeous. Think highly efficient. Think care and concern. All of this and more epitomizes the Nellie. We loved it... right from the first beaming smile, the rapid collection of our bags and the old time courtesy . The service was worth every penny. The staff are so friendly, humorous and accommodating. Our suite (we were upgraded) was olde world fantasy filled with useful toiletries, loads of hangers, a kitchenette and great view of THAT mountain. The gardens are sublime and the food delicious. There's a car service to the Waterfront and the City Tour bus stops outside the huge front entrance.
We didn't have the High Tea but watched people thoroughly enjoying it. Great spectacle.
You don't need to think of a reason to stay here.... just do it!

Room Tip: We stayed in the old refurbished annexed hotel to the rear of the main building. It was quiet and be...

If you want to feel treated like royalty, you came to the right place! The high tea is also a unique experience! The grounds are amazing and you feel like you are in a movie set! The service is super fast (asked something to be brought to our room and it was there in 2 minutes). If only it wasn't so pricey, I would live there!

It's worth every penny to stay in this first class charming hotel. Centrally located within walking distance of great museums and the Company Gardens, the rooms are good sized and comfy and the staff is super friendly and responsive. The Chef's Table was truly a memorable event, with warm friendly informative staff, a great selection of South African wines with a self trained somalier who selected wines not only fitting the meals but also exactly to our taste, and an interesting, not to be beat menu of exceptionally tasty dishes made from locally grown items. The afternoon tea was also quite nice; the savory items were bested a bit by the sweet items, but it didn't matter much with the lovely Roiboos tea and the quiet charming ambience. The fitness center was substantial enough for a full work out, and the spa was quite nice, including the free use of the sauna and dipping pool even for those who do not chose a treatment. The hotel even provides a wide selection of free movies, with free popcorn brought to your room. Not much to complain about at this place. A few items did not work in our room, but they were quickly fixed. Also, take a pass on the warm to order breakfast items, but you will be just fine with the filling continental breakfast, which they even packed for us to go on our early departure on the last day. Also, limited, but spectacular views of Table Mountain. Really everything you need to have a very enjoyable stay in Capetown.

We spent Easter at this hotel. The service at this hotel is amazing. We turned up with our 8 month baby and the suite was equipped with baby toiletries, baby dressing gown and other things. It's a classic hotel but unlike so many hotels like this, its anything but rundown. There is no feeling of faded grandeur here. The food was excellent. On Easter Sunday they organised an egg hunt for the children, which was perfect. Afternoon tea is just lovely. The only oddity about the hotel is the main evening restaurant, the food is excellent but there is a rather awkward planetary theme going on which is at odds with the whole hotel and doesn't work. Apart from that, it's a lovely old building, fabulous food and service (including babysitting). We thoroughly enjoyed it and would return to the same hotel.

Mount Nelson hotel is another fantastic Orient Express property. The location is very convenient, across the street from the gardens and the Museum mile. They also offer complimentary transportation to Table mountain, VA waterfront and Camps Bay.

They also offer a fantastic high tea experience.

The property has a beautiful sculpture garden and the view of the Table Mountain. The service was wonderful as well.
