We stayed here last year as part of our honeymoon & it was one of the most wonderful, classy, old world hotels we've ever been to. Service was top notch, the grounds & gardens & view of Table Mountain are stunning, the rooms spacious & the concierge went out of his way with wonderful suggestions. The breakfast buffet is enormous & the food so fresh & tasty. This is not your cookie cutter hotel - it is stunning & was the old Dutch East India Company Hotel. It's very convenient as well for sight seeing. We tried Cape Grace for 2 nights, & didn't care for it at all (it's on the commercial bland waterfront - just like any other big city & had no character at all). Even if you don't stay at the Mt. Nelson, at least try the fantastic tea.

From the majestic entrance the atmosphere is set. A warm welcome at reception-and guided tour. A bedroom that was beautifully furnished and immaculately set out.
The gardens are so colourful & well-planned with lots of shade.
The pools an oasis with great service and the staff are so friendly wherever you meet them.
We stayed for a week and will return as frequently as we can to a wonderful introduction to Cape Town & South Africa.

The Mount Nelson or 'Nellie' is probably the most famous 5-star hotel in the city, but isn't as perfect as some reviewers have said.

Location: It is set in the Cape Bowl, and across the street is the start of the Company Gardens, with the museums, etc there. The hotel itself has extensive grounds and does not feel like it is in the city centre when you look out at the gardens. But unlike the Waterfront hotels, there isn't much going on nearby, and you need a car/cab to get to any other shops or restaurants. This hotel offers a complimentary shuttle there every 2 hours.

Rooms: We stayed for 2 separate nights in 2 different Superior rooms due to our itinerary. Both rooms had antique furniture and had the feel of a bygone-era. Bathrooms were impeccable (lots of towels, separate bath & shower, marble tiles). There is an evening turn-down as you would expect. However I was disappointed by the lack of modern features eg. they had an old CRT TV in a wooden cabinet (although some may feel it is in keeping with the room). I did not like the distance to some of the rooms from the front desk - the last thing I wanted after returning in the evening was to go up a lift, down a lift, and down a few corridors. For the price (and we had a very good discount via a members' club) I thought the bedrooms were merely satisfactory.

Service: This was the highlight of my experience here. Generally it was faultless - from the maids and porters to the front desk and restaurant staff. However both times we requested twin beds, they showed us to rooms with double beds - albeit later corrected, and with bottles of wine and fruit awaiting us. One concierge was outstanding for procuring us last-minute tickets to Robben Island, but another suggested 'wooden furniture' (?!) as the only feature of interest in our trip to Knysna on the Garden Route.

Food: The buffet breakfast offers a wide range in a pleasant dining area as you would expect. We did not dine there, but did succumb to the afternoon tea. That again was a pleasant experience, but over-rated. Don't have lunch to make the most of it!

Facilities: Again, this seems to be a highlight. The pool looked eniticing and the gardens were beautiful. However we weren't able to spend much time there or exploring the rest of the hotel itself. The business centre/internet access is unsurprisingly expensive.

If you have a few days to relax and make use of the service and facilities then this is the more rewarding option. However if you are a tourist with limited time needing efficiency, I would recommend going elsewhere.

Thk you for your feedback. The MNH is the most centrally located hotel in teh most cultural and historical region of Cape Town with the easiset access to all the tourist attractions in Cape Town and the surrounding Western Cape regions. To further assist our guests, we have introduced a complimentary chauffeur drive vehicle for our guests from 9am to 9pm within a 10km radius of the hotel in addition to our current waterfront front shuttle; this service can be booked by our guets 24 hrs in advance at our travel desk. We are in the process of a rolling upgrade program installing HD flat screen TV's as well as installing a digital fibre option system for digital network TV in all our rooms. As a 109 year old estate, the MNH is an amalgamtion of 6 buildings within our 9 acres of gardens; adjacent to the historical company gardens accomadting art galeries, museums and teh hosues of parliament. We have only one corridor accomodating 10 bedrooms which require access by two elevators from the main reception and these overlook our heated family pool. We have implemented extensive retraining for all our front desk staff to ensure they are fully aware of the quality tourist attractions within Cape Town and the rest of the Western Cape including the Garden route. Our Afternoon tea has been voted the best in the world by Michael Winner and continues to be an institution for both tourists and locals alike and has become very popular for kitchen teas and childrens parties. Our interent charges have been reviewed and a more cost effective tariff is now available to our guests. We remain the only resort hotel in the city centre accomodating predominanatly 25 - 55 year olds with a very strong young family market following. We have a heated family pool and a heated adult pool and we will be opening our new Librisa Spa on the 23rd March which will be the only Spa with a teenage and kids treatment menu!
Thank you again for your comments and I look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Booked to stay at this exclusive location in the centre of Cape Town near the historic Company Gardens. The property is extensive and smacks of old world charm harking back to the days of the British Empire.

The check-in was swift and courteous and a tour of the hotel and its facilities is offered by the receptionists. Parking was free and service was very efficient. Great concierge, who went down and fetched 2 tickets to Robben Island (when they were supposed to be sold out).

The room was comfortable but again matching the old world style of the hotel. The mod cons of the 21st century are truly not the order of the day here. Complimentary bottle of wine and fruit in the room.

A great adults pool and manicured garden are to be found. Great breakfast, though the price matches the location.

Overall this hotel is about retaining the old world style of the British Empire days and charges high rates purely on the level of service. The facilities aren't much to shout home about though.

We have been to the Mount Nelson before and loved it so we decided to return. The hotel was as lovely as ever but I have to say we were disappointed by the manner of the front desk receptionist who checked us in. There were no smiles and she didn't offer any information as to where everything was or what was happening, she merely gave us our room keycard and that was it. I had cause to speak to her again a day or so later and her manner was the sam-e unwelcoming and totally indifferent. I really do not think she should be on the front desk of such a lovely hotel. Having said all that the rest of the staff are superb, accommodating, friendly and they all wear a smile. Our room was good, and the food excellent too. I think it is a shame that more people do not use the oasis buffet in an evening because the atmosphere, setting and buffet is amazing, but if the guests are not told about it, as we weren't, you can't blame them. Theere were a few hiccups as far as room servicing went too. We were never left a bottle of water, our room wasn't turned down or the towels replaced one night until 22.30 when we said don't bother and I couldn't turn the shower taps on attached to the bath, neither could my husband. It sounds as if we didn't enjoy our stay, - in fact we did but if you are paying a lot for a room you expect it to be correct. All in all a lovel;y hotel but a few snags.

Thank you for your valubale feedback. I have shared the feedback with the respective management to ensure corrective measures are put in place where the service levels did not live up to our standards. I am exteremely proud to have put all our staff on all levels through an extensive two day course "I care I can" in the latter part of last year. The 2008 program has just begun to ensure all new starters are as well equipped as those who benefitted from the course last year. There is no doubt that your experinece from the front desk staff and housekeeping was unsatisfactory. Please rest assured that this is certainly not the norm and i am confident that the corrective training by management focusing on the key service issues supported by our guest feedback has removed any lapses in service that you experienced. We are currently in the process of going through each bedroom and testing to ensure all the services are properly operational and to the correct standard. I am glad you enjoyed your overall stay and I look forward to welcoming you back to experinece the additional and improved facilities including the addition of our new R18 million rand Librisa Spa. kind regards

Booked as part of our third wedding anniversary trip...
I cannot speak highly enough of this hotel.
one of the only five star hotels where I have stayed which made you feel like you were the only guest.
The staff from the general manager to the porters were fantastic, we hated the fact we had to go.
If anyone is going to Cape Town, you must stay here...
Its also far enough from the sometimes chaotic V&A but close enough to get there quickly.

The Mount Nelson was a superb hotel for my first visit to Cape Town, the sun shone, the flowers bloomed and the birds sang.
The Nellie as it is affectionately called is set in lush acres of garden, extremely well appointed for its age. The service is impeccable and friendly.
Breakfast is served in the Oasis restaurant overlooking the gardens and pool, with a wide choice as you would expect from a five star hotel. lunch and dinner are served in the main restaurant, beautifully presented.
The rooms are large comfortable, copious towels and a turndown in the evening.
There is a courtesy mini bus to the harbour area throughout the day, taxis are always available and due to the exchange rate with sterling at the moment very cheap. Check their website for photos & more info it's all true.
