Neat, nice and keeping in mind it is not quite summer anymore, so beaches are what they are in summer.

What a lovely beach. A wonderful view of the mountains behind you and the mountains in front of you over the False Bay out by Gordons Bay. Also plenty of shops and restaurants nearby.

We grew up in Fish Hoek but this is the first time we have been back for longer than a week. Absolutely loved being able to walk to the beach pretty much every day, even when windy. Lovely view of sea and mountain, family friendly (kiddies jungle gym at entrance which our family's little ones loved) and yet, it has surfer side, where people walk their dogs, and the catwalk where you can have leisurely stroll or climb down to the rock pools with kids. You must wave at the train when it goes by every 15-30mins depending on time of day - I did quite energetically with my 3 year old every time. If you go really early in the morning you will see the few gray-haired "die hards" who swim every morning. Admittedly the water was a bit cold when we went, but we know from experience that in summer the water is a lovely temperature and safe (except for a few hungry sharks, but no place is perfect. This is Africa after all. Shark watchers are on duty). Take aways on the beach are great (try the calamari roll - yum!) and you must have a flake soft serve ice cream. But avoid the Galley restaurant itself - unfortunately it is disorganized chaos with mediocre food during the day, especially sunny weekends or public holidays. Back to the beach - just go!

Geting to the beach can pose a problem if going by cay, as you first have to traverse the railway crossing. Should you choose to go by car, you also have to pay an entrance fee. The beach is almost on the railway station, so going by train and avoiding the madding crowds in peak hour like traffic may be the better option, depending on where you are staying. The beach itself is fantastic with white sandy streches for over 2km. The downside of the beach is that there are regular Great White Shark spottings, so can be very off putting. Otherwise, a real nice place to put your feet in the water.

Here's a place that has truly stood still with time - it is exactly like it was in my childhood, half a century ago! We prefer to loll on the Jaeger Walkway, a bench lined concrete path that extends along the dramatic scenic coastline.
Parking is safe and secure. There is a beach cafe/take-aways and restauarant ON the beach, but at lunch time it can be hectically full of tourists who have a sea-food lunch as part of their day tour round the Cape Peninsula. Then they go on to the beach and as instructed by their tour guides, they hold up fried potato chips for the seagulls to snatch from their hands. NOT very good for the sea gulls, I'm afraid!
Change rooms and toilets are meticulously maintained. The sea is as clean as it gets in Cape Town nowadays, but we have survived year after year with no ill effects.
