Aquila Private Game Reserve

My extended family and I have just returned from a trip to Capetown including and overnight stay at Aquila. We had an amazing ranger Alvin who took us out on two game drives and it was perfect for young children who want to see animals rather than wait around for them. The food was very good and the accommodation was nicely presented however there was a massive downside.

We stayed in one of the family lodges and woke up at 11pm to the sound of mice running up and down the curtains making an enormous racket. While we weren't happy, we resigned ourselves to having to put up with it, but then mice started running over us in bed and jumping on our pillows clearly quite comfortable in their surroundings and not at all afraid of humans. I wound up sitting up in bed all night with the lights on watching large mice running through our room, having to bat them off our bed while my husband managed to get only a tiny amount of sleep. While the management were understanding, if I'd known there would be such an issue here I never would have stayed. It ruined what would have otherwise been a wonderful experience. Before you stay here I would check if this issue has been resolved.

I cannot praise Aquila highly enough, as a brief stopover during my trip to Cape Town and wishing to get in that "safari" experience it seemed the best of the bunch, I was not dissapointed. The park is not by any means the Kruger national park but it doesn't say it is I think anyone visiting expecting that is stupid you are a couple of hours outside Cape Town.

The whole experience was awesome, the Game Drives were fab our guide was amazing and clearly loved his job and the animals he "works" with.

A great selection of food and drinks to suit everyone's needs yes a buffet but that's not always a bad thing, lovely pool area and very very exciting outside showers in our lovely little private chalet right on the edge of the park. I watched springbok and buffalo in the morning before breakfast right on my doorstep.

oh and a rather vain peacock who actually poses for his photo!

Thank you for a wonderful weekend I will be back

Room Tip: You can spend a lot on staying in a premium lodge but if you are there for 1 night just do the chale...

We loved our stay at Aquila. It is a young reserve about two hours outside of Cape Town. The drive to Aquila is gorgeous. The staff, location, and lodging are all wonderful. The food is also pretty decent. The lodge is cozy. I loved sitting by the pool and watching elephants grazing in the background.

What a great place! We saw all the big five, although the Leopard is a "rescued" Leopard who has his own home/pen. The on sight restaurant served buffets at every meal but the dishes were all very good and different. The rooms were comfortable and clean but the experience was beyond words! We were there 2 days and of our 8 in South Africa and they were great! The staff was remarkable, very friendly and knowledgable and clearly this place is trying their best to help save the indigenous wildlife! If you are planning a trio to South Africa and the Cape Town region do not miss this day trip, or choose to stay overnight, it is really worthwhile! Also do the ATV tour if you can it was the best!

Room Tip: Not about the rooms but ask for Daniel as your tour guide!

A unforgettable experience from start to end. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our game ranger was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining on our early morning game drive. The animals are most impressive and nothing quite compares to hearing the thunderous roar of a lion at 7am to get ones blood flowing. The food was superb, thankfully it is a buffet which afforded numerous returns to the very appetising display of south african dishes. An absolutely magnificient experience and most certainly a return destination. Well done Aquila team, 5 stars!

Is near Touws River in Cape. Huge restaurant - buffet style - good food.
Accomodation good with some nice touches eg open fires - romantic atmosphere
Area gets very very cold in winter especially on an evening game drive. Rather flat terrain.
Game is very restricted just a few of some popular animals eg two elephants. Lions are in a fenced area and are fairly tame. They have something of a rehab centre.
I injured myself there -They really had no clue what to do except to call an ambulance which had a staff who, like the lodge staff, could not even give me a pain killer. I had very acute pain from a serious but not life-threatening injury. We eventually drove to hospital in Stellenbosch and only got to hospital there six hours after the injury.
Not a real game reserve as you find further north but good for a restful few days particularly in summer. Easy access to Cape Town from N1

We decided to take a day trip to have a feel of a safari and see a few animals. the drive to aquila from cape town takes around 2 hours through some spectacular snow capped mountains, vine yards and orchards. It is quite cold on the reserve compared to cape town and you may need more winter wear. On arrival you can have a buffet breakfast which was pretty decent and then you are driven into the park. there was a fire the previous night and one of the chalets was burnt to the ground. The game drive was rushed, we could see hippos, elephants and lions but the ranger herded us back to lunch despite spotting a giraffe and rhino in the distance since he felt too sleepy after dousing the fire all night. rather disappointing.
