What a relief and a pleasure to find Roberto’s restaurant. We had planned to eat in one of the restaurants around the famed V&A Waterfront Harbour but we almost ran to get out of the most over-sold and commercially exploited tourist trap ever encountered.
It was only a short walk to ‘Roberto’s – Signature Restaurant’ in the centre (Long Street) of the shopping area of Cape Town where we had a most memorable and enjoyable meal. To put that in context, we had been privileged to enjoy a fantastic trip across southern Africa, staying and eating in some of the best hotels and restaurants.
The ceiling height was high and decor was light so there was a cool and refreshing atmosphere in such contrast to everything we had seen earlier at the harbour. However, the welcome was warm and attentive offering the best of Mediterranean hospitality.
Our meal was typically Portuguese and the seafood was certainly some of the very best we have tasted anywhere. The mezes were light and delicious, but the west coast prawns in the special seafood platter were amazing. We followed with Portuguese Pasteis de Nata – little lemon scented custard tarts in feather light pastry which melted in our mouths. If you have never had these little pastries, you don’t know what you have been missing. In fact if you are in the area, you will not eat fish that is fresher or better.
Roberto’s CV is highly illustrious as his achievements in the kitchen have been widely recognised; in addition, his peers selected him to be a ‘Certified Culinary Judge for the South African Chefs Association’. His repertoire of reflects his background; Mediterranean and, in particular, Portuguese followed by his move to South Africa where he was a pioneer in fynbos (foraging) cuisine. Just as impressive, Roberto was Executive Chef at the highly acclaimed ‘One and Only Resort’ and the equally prestigious ‘Twelve Apostles’ Hotel’ - two of the best hotels in the Cape.
What a great find and so much better in all respects than the V&A Waterfront alternatives, this restaurant offers some of the best fresh seafood in Cape Town.
