My experience visiting four of the Uthando supported projects was the highlight of my Cape Town visit. Xolani took us to visit a community garden where the women grow vegetables that are sold to restaurants in the city. I was fascinated that they use the garden left overs (tops, vines etc) to produce the gas they use to fire the stove. Talk about recycling - this is an amazing project. The Kiddies Educare was an uplifting visit. The director is an amazing and compassionate lady who started the program which now educates pre-school, kindergarten and first graders. The rooms full of smiling, learning youngsters were wonderful to see. Uthando partners with Kiddies Educare and helped them build the school building they now occupy. We also visited a women's center where the ladies develop skills that further their livelihoods. Our last stop with a Sr. Center. The ladies and gentlemen welcomed us with smiles and warm hearts. They wanted to learn about our lives and shared theirs with us. We got to sing and dance together and it felt like we were, for a brief while, a part of their community. This was a heart warming experience.
Xolani, thank you sharing your knowledge and passion for the work Uthando is doing in the townships. Also, please thank the adults and children who shared their daily life experiences with us. These visits have made a lasting impression on me and reinforced my belief that when we come together to share about good, we make friends across miles and boundaries of time and nationality.
