Owner description: Uthando (Love) South Africa is an internationally award winning and unique Non Profit Organisation and Fair Trade certified company. Uthando raises funds and other forms of assistance for a broad range of inspiring and innovative community development projects in South Africa. Uthando runs tours as daily scheduled tours AND tailormade private tours (for groups of any size). We take visitors into the townships (impoverished areas created during Apartheid on the outskirts of Cape Town) to visit incredible community development projects. We shine a light on the remarkable people and projects that are helping to build the new South Africa at grass roots level. On our tours we tell the remarkable story and history of South Africa and its brutal past, we discuss pertinent issues confronting our people, and provide an inspiring sense of hope through the efforts of dedicated grass roots leaders. Our tours are authentic, meaningful, non-invasive, respectful and very importantly beneficial to the communities being visited. The cost of our tours incorporate contributions to the projects that we visit and can thus also be considered philanthropic in nature. UTHANDO IS FAR MORE THAN JUST A NON PROFIT COMPANY, IT IS A LABOUR OF LOVE DEDICATED TO HELPING CREATE A MORE JUST AND EQUITABLE BRAVE NEW WORLD !

I traveled on a township tour with Uthando in June 2013. I thoroughly enjoyed James' explanation of South African history on the way out to the townships and he was able to answer all the questions that came up on the ride. We toured two different non-profit organizations working to make improvements in the townships and our hosts at each stop were wonderful. The trip ended with a Youth Day celebration in Khayelitsha which I will never forget. Troupes of children dancing, choirs from girls and boys to local men, and it all ended with the performers and crowd signing the South African national anthem. It was an amazing experience and I would definitely go again when I return to Cape Town.

My elderly mother and I spent a fascinating and inspirational morning visiting three township projects with our excellent Uthando guide, Xolani. We wanted to understand more about township life today without being voyeuristic and this tour was perfect. Uthando is focused on supporting the many local people who are trying to improve township life through constructive participation in their own communities. The three projects we visited were a craft and music centre; a market garden initiative; and a community centre for elderly folk. Each centre was fascinating, and the enthusiasm and devotion of their staff and participants was truly uplifting. We felt that our visit was an example of tourism helping rather than hurting. Xolani was an exceptional guide, sharing his passion, knowledge and great warmth with us to make this one of our most memorable experiences in South Africa. We came away feeling that despite South Africa's significant social challenges, there is every reason to hope for a brighter future for all.

We had an incredible day visiting 3 townships with Uthando. Our guide, Xolani is so bright and knowledgeable with both SA history and present situations. It was an inspirational morning for my husband and I as well as for our three children and so good to see that there are citizens out there who are willing to work hard and educate themselves in order to take care of their families. We are so happy that we incorporated this tour in our short 3 day visit to Capetown. I consider it a "must do".

James Fernie led us on a wonderful trip to some of the townships in the Cape Flats. He explained the history of the area and provided background about the struggles in SA from the early 1940's to the present day. These suburbs contain a hugely disproportionate number of Cape Town citizens and conditions are crowded and poverty and deprivation is a result. The tour took us to several small non-profit organisations so we could meet the people running them and also the people who benefit from them. Uthando supports the non-profits by bringing visitors and funds and helping to raise awareness. The trip was joyful and fascinating; it's not voyeuristic walk - snapping at people as they go about their daily business. It's a respectful yet fun opportunity to see why the people of Cape Flats need assistance and how successful it is when it's available. I highly recommend it!

High recommended professional, knowledgeable township tour company. Fair Trade accredited Uthando support carefully selected viable development projects in Cape Town townships. They add valuable in-depth context to the visit with SA's history and present. A must do for visitors *and locals* alike, providing a fascinating, moving, accessible and contributory path into a world that can feel impenetrable or intimidating. You will be very warmly welcomed by the projects that your visit will financially support.
