Owner description: The Footsteps to Freedom walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town tells the story of Cape Town and its people. We use streets, buildings, monuments, memorials and the passing street-scene as props develop a story of Cape Town and South Africa's dramatic past. Stories of Dutch and British colonial rule, slavery and apartheid, and finally our peaceful transition to a real democracy. We gather before 10h30 (Mon-Sat) in the lobby of the Taj Cape Town Hotel, located in centre of Cape Town's cultural and historic precinct. At 10h30 the 2½ hr walking tour starts from the steps of the Bishop Robert Gray Memorial, adjacent Taj Cape Town hotel.

“Brilliantly illuminating and sobering morning”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2013

Ivor is a passionate and knowledgeable resident of Cape Town animatedly covering 120,000 years of history in a leisurely walk of two and a half hours in the city centre, much of it relates to the stormy events of his own lifetime. The old buildings are seen in a new way when you hear about their past and that of the people passing through them. Then he told us where we might have lunch. Excellent value

“Footsteps to freedom Walking tour of Cape Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2013

This morning I did this walking tour with Imme and two other clients. The rain did not ease the whole time but it did not stop the walk and Imme was so informative, very knowledgeable and made it all very interesting giving me a wonderful insight into the history of not only Cape Town but RSA in general. I learnt so much and came away thinking how ignorant I was before this 2.5 hours. Thanks Imme.

“An excellent overview of Cape Town history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2013

I would definitely recommend this walking tour for anyone who is spending at least a day in Cape Town. It was an excellent overview of Cape Town's incredible history - and the perfect way to start off your visit. The tour guide was very informative and engaging, and had a lot of personal stories to add of his own experiences during apartheid. Don't just spend all your time on the beach and out at restaurants when you're in Cape Town. Make sure you take this tour!

“Cape of Good Hope Tour and visit to Cape Town Townships”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2013

After an amazing time in Tanzania we arrived in Cape Town. We had booked Garth for a tour of the Cape of Good Hope. He picked us up at our hotel in a very comfortable vehicle and took the time to explain our day in advance, even producing a map which gave us a clear understanding of direction and destination. Garth's knowledge of the area and the history was so appreciated. The views were spectacular. It was a rainy morning, so he changed our course to ensure the very best views could be enjoyed in the afternoon when the sun was out, and it was a great call, because we had a clear sky all afternoon. We stopped for a fish lunch that was so fresh and the setting was lovely. I can't say enough about the quality of the tour and about Garth's genuine interest in what he does. We inquired about a tour of the Townships and he quickly arranged that for us on the day of our departure from Cape Town. We were so happy we didn't miss it because the Townships are very much a part of Cape Town that should be seen. These neighbourhoods can be seen from the highway, and I'm certain many people don't wish to venture in, but if you give it the time, you will see people trying to make a better life for their families. There is hope there. A special shout out to the Happy Feet Youth Project who's singing and dancing made us smile. A worthy cause indeed. Thanks to Garth from the 3 Canadian ladies.

Marie, Laureen and Jackie I am so glad you enjoyed our trip down to the Cape of Good Hope, NOT the meeting point of the Two Oceans! Tours with people of curious minds are always more interesting.

Many visitors to Cape Town bypass the townships, but as you probably experienced, we tend to come away from the townships having benefited from the inspirational humanity and positive attitude of the Township residents like Siviwe and his colleagues at Vamos and Happy Feet.
