“Top class hostel”
Reviewed June 3, 2012

Everything you'd expect and more. The fact it's a fairly small hostel makes it a very friendly and social environment. Stephen and Wayne are great, they're your hostel host and personal tourist information board, booking trips and making recommendations for things to do and places to stay for onward travel. Very secure. Always plenty of hot water. Very clean. Good sized lockers in rooms. There was a BBQ available for use in the pristine back garden. Free, reliable wifi. Light breakfast included. They recycle and use a bit of solar power. Good location. Very pleasant and well sized TV lounge/dining room. Well stocked and suitably sized kitchen. Modern & clean bathroom (with soap and hand towels!). It's not a party hostel but it's near enough to Long Street that you can get involved if you wish (which suits me about right). On a quiet road so no traffic to keep you up at night. Comfortable beds. Less than a 5 minute walk to a decent supermarket and liquor store. I can't really think of anything negative to stay, so just stay there. Simple as that.

This place was incredible!!! By far the best hostel in South Africa. Stephen and Wayne were really helpful and they make you feel like at home. Double bedrooms were very comfortables (500 ZAR), nice mattresses, and very big bathroom and shower. Also tried the family bedrooms and were great also, with 2 beds and 1 bunk bed (200 ZAR p/p). Shared bathrooms were spotless. Free breakfast included with cereals, milk, toasts, jam, butter, peanut butter etc... Kitchen very complete, and a big shared fridge to put your own food. Perfect location of the hostel in a very secure neighbourhood with night guard. Really close to groceries, restaurants, bars etc... Stephen and Wayne can arrange yoou anything, from tours, car rentals, taxis, etc.. On the whole, a really good place to stay in at Cape Town, and not too expensive. Defenitely will come back here if again in cape Town.

Recently I stayed at the Amber Tree Lodge for the second time and the second visit was still as excellent as the first one back in November 2010. Unfortunately we could only stay for two nights and had to move to another hostel for the last three nights of our Cape Town visit, but it can easily be understood why Amber Tree Lodge is so popular and completely booked out, even in South African autumn: On the one hand there is the fantastic location with a balcony view of Table Mountain, beautiful rooms, a clean kitchen, supervised parking lot, and so on - and on the other hand - what is even more - unbeatable great staff. They provide lots of travelling advice, restaurant and bar recommendations and always help you as best as they can. So I don't think this has been my last trip to Amber Tree. Stephen and Wayne, please carry on!

My stay at the Amber Tree Lodge was one for the ages--I have never enjoyed my experience at a hostel more. The employees at Amber Tree were incredibly friendly and hospitable--making suggestions and offering travel advice, lending us their blow dryer, booking a rental car, and even helping us change our flat tire. I can not say enough good things about Amber Tree--if I am ever back in Cape Town there is no doubt in my mind that I will be staying at Amber Tree.

Amazing location, free internet, free breakfast, clean rooms and bathrooms, incredible employees=A+++

Beautiful room, with a view of Table Mountain, fantastic facilities, great location, nice kitchen, even a good coffee maker and very helpful and friendly staff. Overall superb hostel. Could perhaps have another computer for internet, as often the wait for the only one in the shared living room could be a while, but other than that everything was fantastic.

We stayed for three nights (one night in a dorm, and 2 nights in a private double). We would have stayed longer but, unsurprisingly, they were fully booked and we very reluctantly had to find an alternative for our final nights in Cape Town.
The dorms contain the most comfortable bunk beds we have ever experienced. They were built to the owner's specification and ingeniously create "private space" for belongings and hanging clothes. Security is excellent - huge lockers (use your own padlock) in the dorms, and a state of the art entry system to get into the driveway and the hostel itself. Our double room was adequately spacious and the bed very comfortable with lovely clean linen. All of the shared facilities were squeaky clean (and tastefully furnished), and the kitchen was well equipped. The free breakfast was great - it even included freshly filtered coffee which is practically unheard of in the backpacker community!
But all of that aside, what sets the Amber Tree Lodge apart from the rest is the overwhelming friendliness and helpfulness of the Manager (Wayne) and the owner (Stephen). Both guys entirely committed to making sure that guests get the most from their stay in Cape Town. Book your trip to Robben Island on the hostel computer using their free internet access and they are happy to print your tickets out for you. Most hostels would have found a way of taking some commission out of that deal ... ask about sights and tours and they will bend over backwards to advise and assist. Stephen was particularly helpful in assisting us with the planning of our trip along the Garden Route for when we left Cape Town, he very generously sat us down and talked us through some really helpful recommendations.
Location wise it's perfect for a great choice of restaurants, its walkable to the "main sights" of CT (about 1/2 hr to V&A waterfront), and positioned under Table Mountain with a view from the balcony which is to die for!
Don't make our mistake and leave it to the last minute to book. Quite rightly it is popular!

Room Tip: all of the rooms are excellent - the dorms are probably the best dorms we have seen and on that basi...
