This is probably one of the best Steak houses in SA, they specialize only with Steaks and therefore make it fantastic every time. I have yet to have a bad time at this wonderful location. Their service is brilliant, and now also have the Night Club Vibe going. Thanx for always being great at what you guys do. Put this place on your meaty Bucket list for sure.

“Best steak”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013 via mobile

This was the best steak I've had in a long time. Yummmm. It was cooked perfectly. And fries were unlimited. I will definitely be back soon. And for the price. Can't beat it

“Great concept for lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2013

Many people may be perplexed by this concept, only one option for lunch? However, if you are in the mood for a nice simplistic yet well prepared salad, sirloin & chips and a drink, this is the place to go. Steaks are well prepared to order and not too large. Great place for a Parisian type of lunch.

“Amazing innovation, great food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2013

HQ Restaurant, Shortmarket Street, Cape Town – 17/1/13

Established some four years ago, HQ Restaurant has an extraordinary and innovative approach to serving its clientele, from a menu perspective at least.

Everybody gets the same, boldly printed on their brown paper tablecloth protectors it states “Welcome to HQ, where you can have anything you like, as long as it’s salad, sirloin and chips…………” and that is exactly how it is.

Situated in the heart of Cape Town within a stone’s throw of ample parking, HQ, housed in Heritage Square, imbues an atmosphere of charm partnered with functionality. The open-plan stainless steel kitchen adds an almost industrial touch to the large dining area, which is spectacularly lit by rows of shaded lights hanging above each table.

In light of the limited menu, there was not too much that needed to be explained by the waitron; however her knowledge of the cooking methods and ingredients was both interesting and increasingly mouth-watering.

The salad starter was extremely tasty, a mixture of crunchy lettuce, pine nuts, shaved parmesan and a delicate but at the same time mildly tart dressing, personally not a being a huge fan of salads, I was surprised at how exceptionally delicious it was.

There is an abundance of seating at HQ, the downside to that perhaps being the proximity of neighbouring diners and their table conversation. A romantic meal would possibly not be ideal, though my guess is that that is not their core target market.

With a choice of 125 gram, 250 gram or 500 gram sirloin steak for the main course, obviously cooked to your predilection, I went for the standard 250 grams. The steak, according to our waitron, was from Namibia and had been aged for a period of 25 days.

Presented, bathed in a delectable sauce consisting of brandy and cheese and herbs and butter and so much more, my sirloin steak, medium-rare cooked as recommended by the chef, smelled and looked irrefutably beautiful. The thin crispy French fries, apparently double-fried for crispiness, filled a good portion of the rest of the plate.

Garnishing a plate to some is artistry to others a necessity and to me superfluous and actually at times wasteful. I was pleased to see that HQ was more interested in providing good quality food than presenting a picture perfect masterpiece more suited to the pages of Vogue, Cosmopolitan or House and Home. Who eats garnish anyway?

Topping up French fries half way through your meal with additional sauce for the steak not only keeps everything warm, it further increases the appreciation for the obvious thought that the restaurant owners have for their guests.

HQ Restaurant is definitely not about ‘turning’ tables; you are never rushed and can eat at your own pace. This relaxed ambience is certainly one of the positive points of running such a large restaurant, in my mind at least.

Monday night, I would imagine is another matter altogether, HQ’s two for one promotion has proven to be extremely successful making Mondays one of the busiest days of the week. It simply makes the reasonably priced salad, steak and chips at R169, twice as reasonable.

At belt-loosening point, ice cream was all that I could manage for dessert, black cherry, vanilla pod and Ferrero roche, a sumptuous way to end a most delicious meal and experience at HQ Restaurant, Cape Town.
