“So much fun!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

My husband and I went there for dinner last week during a four day stay in Cape Town. I went in not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised!

We took the drum lesson and ate and watched the dance show. The drum lesson was a unique and very enjoyable experience; the instructor led a large group of us (all tourists) in a drum circle type of environment, and he had a good sense of humor. Participation is not mandatory, though, and one can just join for the dinner/show.

Sometimes a place that serves a dozen courses will skimp on quality or quantity, but not this one. They offered a variety of game and conventional protein, lots of veggies and grains, and good desserts. Every last bite was incredibly delicious. The quantity was enormous, and the staff assured us that they give excess food away, so we were pleased to learn it doesn't go to waste. (We had enough food for six though we were two, and no place to store it if we took it back.) The performers and staff enthusiastically performed their show and service duties. Some numbers involved audience participation, which was pretty fun! All in all, really cool experience!

“Great atmosphere and tasty food for a real African evening”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2013

Despite having read some critical comments about this place, we very much enjoyed the food, atmosphere and the African experience. It's not touristy, though it offers a show that tourists will enjoy when visiting Africa. The service was very friendly and warm. I forgot something of value there and they gave it back to me after I called them to find it. Very professional.
The food offers a great insight into a variety of traditional African meals. It is plentisome and nice.
The Shuttle service is very handy, as taxis might not be easily available outside.
We would definitely recommend it for a great African meal experience, though it is not cheap compared to other great places in Cape Town.

“Nice food and good fun”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

We went to GOLD with not much expectations, it was a recommendation amongst many other. At the entrance something that seemed to be a "wooden statue" approached us and literally scared the s""t out of me, but it the end it was very funny. Our waiter Francis took great care of us explaining the menu and how it all worked and the food was excellent. You must go there hungry as it is a lot of food :-)

During the meal there was some fab entertainment by some women and men singing and energetically dancing. We had no clue what the cost would be and were nervous it would be high, but as usually in Cape Town, you get great value to moderate costs.

“Interesting food, but hidden cost”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013

We had dinner at Gold Restaurant last night and here are our take on the pluses and minuses:
The Good: The restaurant is conveniently located. It is a multi-level interesting design, with beautifully African decorated and servers decked out in colorful costumes. Music and dancing entertainment are included. The menu is a 15 course fixed menu illustrating dishes from around Africa. The 15 courses include about 8 bread and appetizers, 5 main courses and two deserts, a fruit plate being one. There is more food than most people could possibly eat.
The Bad: They provide a van shuttle service which costs 35R per person to the restaurant but for no apparent reason costs 75R per person. We used the shuttle to the restaurant but took a cab back - which cost us only 35R total, a savings of about 115R.
The two meat dishes were, for us, highly over salted.
If you arrive early you will be ushered in to participate in an interactive drumming. What the website and the staff fail to state is that this session costs 85R per person.
For a beer that was listed at 13R we were overcharge at 20R.
The total price was about 920R with tip and the beer and 1 glass of wine. This is by no means an exorbitant price compared to the US, but it does feel a little like the airlines who minimum fare but then go on to add charges for food, drinks, headsets, luggage and who knows, restrooms?
