We chose this hotel as this was our second week in Cape Town and we wanted to be closer to the 'action' ie Waterfront, etc. First week was in Llandudno for my daughter's wedding.
When we arrived at the outside of the hotel, I was a little disconcerted at the front gates - they are large and grey and not particularly welcoming looking; once behind the gates, this hid the six or so parking spaces for guests cars. Down the steps to reception and a tranquil scene awaits you; soft music, nice ambience and this looks onto the breakfast area, the small lounge area and the pool area. We were shown around the various spaces by Tendai and to our room.
If memory serves me right, we had chosen a deluxe room with a balcony - room 2 - this overlooked the sea (although not much of a sea view because of a building in front of the hotel) and the balcony looked down into the pool area.
The hotel was very quiet overall and we appeared to be the longest staying guests whilst there (a week) when others appeared to stay for one or two nights and then moved on.
The staff cannot be faulted - Tendai, Donald, the night man (didn't get his name) and the breakfast ladies - service was 100% from everyone. Very friendly staff.
The room itself - average size with bathroom and very large shower. I found it difficult to dry my hair as the plug points were nowhere near a mirror and the dryer cord didn't reach either, so that as a small challenge. We asked if they had softer pillows as they were very hard for our taste and a day or so later, we were given slightly softer ones, though not feathers.
We drove around where we needed to go, but even if you don't have a car, it's very easy for reception to call you a cab. On two occasions however we found he cab drivers pulled a fast one thinking we were tourists, ie going the opposite way to where we needed to go and then winding back again (we have Scottish accents, but have lived in Jhb for nearly 40 years and have been to Cape Town on numerous occasions) so we had to pull them up about that (nothing to do with the hotel though - just mentioning it so that others are aware).
We had a lovely week overall though in the hotel and if we decide we need a more central point, we will definitely book the One 8 Hotel again.
