We chose this hotel as this was our second week in Cape Town and we wanted to be closer to the 'action' ie Waterfront, etc. First week was in Llandudno for my daughter's wedding.

When we arrived at the outside of the hotel, I was a little disconcerted at the front gates - they are large and grey and not particularly welcoming looking; once behind the gates, this hid the six or so parking spaces for guests cars. Down the steps to reception and a tranquil scene awaits you; soft music, nice ambience and this looks onto the breakfast area, the small lounge area and the pool area. We were shown around the various spaces by Tendai and to our room.

If memory serves me right, we had chosen a deluxe room with a balcony - room 2 - this overlooked the sea (although not much of a sea view because of a building in front of the hotel) and the balcony looked down into the pool area.

The hotel was very quiet overall and we appeared to be the longest staying guests whilst there (a week) when others appeared to stay for one or two nights and then moved on.

The staff cannot be faulted - Tendai, Donald, the night man (didn't get his name) and the breakfast ladies - service was 100% from everyone. Very friendly staff.

The room itself - average size with bathroom and very large shower. I found it difficult to dry my hair as the plug points were nowhere near a mirror and the dryer cord didn't reach either, so that as a small challenge. We asked if they had softer pillows as they were very hard for our taste and a day or so later, we were given slightly softer ones, though not feathers.

We drove around where we needed to go, but even if you don't have a car, it's very easy for reception to call you a cab. On two occasions however we found he cab drivers pulled a fast one thinking we were tourists, ie going the opposite way to where we needed to go and then winding back again (we have Scottish accents, but have lived in Jhb for nearly 40 years and have been to Cape Town on numerous occasions) so we had to pull them up about that (nothing to do with the hotel though - just mentioning it so that others are aware).

We had a lovely week overall though in the hotel and if we decide we need a more central point, we will definitely book the One 8 Hotel again.

Room Tip: We were in Room No 2 with a balcony which overlooked the pool. It was described as having a sea vie...

This place was a real find. The rooms were large, stylish and very clean. The location was good for the money but it depends how near you want to be the waterfront. We chose not to walk in the dark, so it was a little frusrtaing curbing the Sauvignan Blanc consumption so we coud drive back.
The staff were very friendly, as were the other guests. It didnt feel like a guesthouse but more a compact hotel which suited us really well.
We missed out on the weekday breakfasts as we had to be out early but there was a continental spread that was fine.
Overall, really good value for money and I expect in summer, when the poole etc is in action, it would be great.

The One 8 is a fantastic hotel. The rooms are modern, yet tastefully decorated, the hotel is located close to downtown (20-30min walk) and the waterfront (20 min walk), and best of all - GREAT SERVICE. I'd go so far as to say that it's the friendliest and most attentive service I have received at any accommodation (from guesthouses to luxurious hotels). Breakfast is basic, but satisfying (eggs made to order, cereals, fruit, yogurt, etc.). Overall, it's a great hotel for great value. Definitely recommend staying there (as opposed to many of the guesthouses and 4 star hotels) if planning a trip to Cape Town.

Originally booked this place for 4 nights but decided to stay for 2 weeks. The staff are very friendly and go out of there way to help you plan your stay. Breakfasts by the pool and jacuzzi in the evening were some of the best moments of my stay in Cape Town.
This place is excellent if you want a gay friendly hotel without the sleazy gays making you uncomfortable. It's about 50/50 straight/gay - in my opinion

We just returned to London following two weeks stay in The One 8. We have stayed here before (about 2 years ago) and absolutely loved it. This warm and friendliest hotel I have ever stayed in is very homely, quiet and welcoming. The atmosphere is very lovely and absolutely relaxed.
The location is great, with the Waterfront and seafront being within walking distance and easily accessible for enjoying the fresh air. The owner Paul deserves special mention he provided excellent advice on what to see/do and to the rest of the staff who made us feel very welcome. I have already recommended friends and colleagues to stay here. We would definitely stay here again and again..

We recently stayed here for 4 nights. My partner has stayed here before (some 2 years ago) and loved it then and wanted me to experience it. I can completely see why he recommended and arranged for us to stay here! Loved the location and found the rooms spacious and very clean and the hotel has a a high specification throught. The friendly staff cannot do enough for you to make you feel welcome and pampered. We had four perfect nights here and were sad to leave! Would highly recommend this hotel.
