“My first visit to Cape Town and the Grand Daddy Hotel”
Reviewed April 10, 2012

I loved it. As soon as I stepped into the hotel, I felt like at home :) believe me, it doesn't happen very often. Everybody was very, super, incredibly nice and all of them were trying their very best to make you feel comfortable. My room was clean, cozy, comfortable and for me "capetowny" indeed...(not that I know much of what Cape Town feels like since I was there for only 2 nights but hey, I am a very spoiled traveler, I feel entitled to say when something is "ny" and when it's not :) .....the only sad thing about it all was the hotel kitchen. Closed on Sunday AND Monday night!!! I was so so so so so disappointed (being a gourmet, I get really upset about food) when they told me I could not have my chicken wrap cause the kitchen was closed. If you cook so good, don't ever close the kitchen, especially if people stay there for only a few nights. I had to leave the hotel and look for a place to eat (I travel alone and I am a woman so it wasn't comfortable for me to do that)....but to make me feel better, one of the nice hotel staff people went to post my letters for me and that made me smile again. The trailer park on the roof???? YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!!! Thanks again for making me feel comfortable and at home. Take care and hopefully I can come back one day, you owe me a chicken wrap :) with a big hug to all of you
Gabriella (Switzerland)

The Grand Daddy hotel is a very cool place with modern funky decor and friendly staff. It's location makes it ideal for soaking up the real Cape Town experience - not the waterfront tourist version. Highly recommended for couples.

Room Tip: The rooftop caravans are very funky BUT some are very small and won't even fit al your suitcases...

A fun experience and a comfortable stay! Do not hesitate to try the, on the first glance small and damp, but on a second look very high class prepared caravans on the rooftop of the Grand Daddy Hotel. You will not regret it! Top AC and with a happy design (the goldilock and the three bears caravan has xxx rated bearnography) it feels lika a hotelroom in a friendly garden!

Don't miss the weekly film screening at the rooftop with oldstyle popcorns servings!

Room Tip: Ask to see the caravans unique design before chosing, if more than one are available.

I love this hotel. The space is impeccable and the bar stocked some impressive bourbon. Our suite was amazing and the trailer on the roof was even better. Very well designed and nicely appointed. The only disappointment was the front desk staff and the hotel's tour operator (non-staff, contractor). The front desk staff could not make even basic recommendations for a gym or even a local place to grab a pizza! They botched our airport transfer on the trip home as well. The tour operator lectured us when we made an enquiry and then strung us along on a car rental. After being told that there were no cars available in town, we did a google search and did our own booking quite easily. Bottom line...incredible hotel, amazing location, very disappointing staff.

We sincerely regret that this was the guest’s experience at the Grand Daddy Hotel, as it is certainly not a reflection of our normal staff standard.

Our management has thoroughly investigated the incident and the necessary action has since been taken with the staff in question to ensure that this does not happen again.

Our General Manager has engaged with the guest directly to address and resolve the situation in a personal manner.

We stayed 3 nights here in Feb this year. The service in the hotel was excellent. And the hotel is pretty cool. The first room we was offered was kinda small, but when we complained about some pigeons outside the window, they moved us to a much larger room which was really good.

Over the weekend, there was a party on the roof which was quite loud, but one phone call to reception and the music was turned down.

The location of the hotel is bang in the centre of downtown Cape Town. Really handy for loads of restaurants and bars. Even 24 hour corner shops just outside the hotel.

Breakfast was in the hotel’s restaurant and was good. There was also very cheap parking included which is handy in Cape Town.

All in all We enjoyed our stay here, it is in a very busy area of Cape Town so if you are after a more relaxing quiet spot to stay is probably not right. But if you are after a great place to stay close to where it is all happening, this is the place to be.

Thank you for the review, we are glad that you enjoyed your stay at the Grand Daddy Hotel. Thank you also for the valuable feedback on the rooftop trailer park.

You are 100% correct in stating that this is not the hotel you should select if you are looking for a quiet serene experience. The Grand Daddy is ultimately a hip and funky city hotel and we fully embrace the lively atmosphere of Long Street. The vibe on the rooftop is also hip and lively, hence the open air cinema and the live concerts. Although due consideration is given to the comfort of the guests in the trailers, we also encourage guests to take part in the active nightlife and experience a part of the Cape Town Urban Culture.

Our trailer park is a unique and different experience, we fully agree with your recommendation to guests to only stay 1 or 2 nights in a trailer and the remainder of their stay in the hotel.
Our maintenance team has been spending some time over the last couple of weeks on the rooftop area, to beautify it. Water wise plants have planted in the garden, the sofas for the Cinema has been reupholstered and the cleaning team have been given instruction to take care of cleaning away all litter after functions, to ensure that it remains the unique location it has became known for.

I decided to try their bar, as it was drinks time, and I thought the name of the hotel was sufficiently wacky to warrant a visit. Looked a lot of fun, especially with the Airflow caravans on the roof!

The bar was quiet when we got there, but this didn't put us off the enjoyment of some excellent margaritas, so top marks for passing that test!

Would like to stay there one day...when we return.

Situated on Long Street, the hotel is in a good location for the many local bars and restaurants and a safe and easy 15 minute walk to V & A waterfront during the day (a 40/50 ZAR taxi trip in an evening). However, make sure you book a taxi through the hotel. We took a taxi which was parked outside the hotel one evening and it soon became apparent the guy was not a competent driver. The V & A security guys are happy to hail an authorised cab on the waterfront for your return trip.

We stayed 2 nights in a Grand Daddy Suite, which was spacious, clean and well maintained with its own small outside 'garden' complete with table, chairs and a sun umbrella. Our last night was spent in an airstream trailer on the roof of the hotel. Our suite also had tea and coffee making facilities which were very welcome.

Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was excellent with a choice of juices, fruit, cereals, muffins etc. There is also a choice of hot dishes cooked to order and the breakfast certainly set us up for the day. Apart from a glitch on the first morning, service was very good and we found all the staff extremely pleasant and helpful.

We enjoyed our last night in the trailer. Fortunately, it was a Sunday when the rooftop bar is closed and luckily there were no private functions or I agree with previous comments that noise may have been a problem. I also agree the trailer has limited space (we stayed in Moon Tides, which is actually one of the bigger trailers and the bathroom/toilet area was very small), but overall it was a pleasant experience and something a little different. On a practical note, due to the space restrictions, we felt one night in the trailer was probably about right, having had the luxury of the suite the previous 2 nights. However, the bed was very comfortable as was the sitting space.

All in all we very much enjoyed the Grand Daddy experience and I would recommend the hotel as being convenient for V & A, local bars and restaurants as well as its closeness to the cable car for Table Mountain. If I had to be hyper-critical, I would say that the trailer park area could do with a spruce up as could the trailers. Whilst I totally understand the need for the hotel to make money, because the rooftop is open to the public hosting live bands and the Pink Flamingo open air cinema the area is looking a little shabby (Our outside sitting space was littered with cigarette ends).

We felt that the rooftop space should be either a public area or private for the occupants of the trailers. The trailer park is marketed as a signature of the hotel and is really what attracted us in the first place to stay there, so we probably expected something a little more up market. However, we did enjoy our stay and would recommend this quirky hotel to anyone looking for something a little different when visiting Cape Town.

Room Tip: Ask for a Grand Daddy Suite at the rear of the hotel as they have an outside sitting space.
