Description: Addis in Cape! Voted best African Eatery in Cape Town, an authentic Ethiopian restaurant that caters for Non-vegetarian, Vegan and Vegetarian clients. We provide a unique communal dining experience you, your family and friends will remember. From traditional hand-wash ceremonies to our traditional Ethiopian coffee we promise a memorable experience. Ethiopian cuisine is famous for its rich aromas and generous use of herbs and spices. The country was historically situated on trading routes that included the trade of many exotic spices; this history has had a tremendous influence on the taste of Ethiopian food as we know it. Today most of the herbs and spices are blended and prepared in the home with great love and attention, as are those used in Addis in Cape. The dishes that you taste here are unique to Ethiopia and we are proud as a restaurant to share them with you.

Recently had a meal there. Lovely experience. Very different to anywhere I'd been before. Gorgeous building, beautifully restored. Beautiful waitress :-) Food was lovely. Margarita's were great. I can't wait to go back! Well worth it. Yummy!

“Such Unexpected Fun as well as Delicious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2013

Decided to look at something different for lunch. We were in Cape Town for a long week-end and already had our favorite restaurants lined up. It was noon so we decided to try "Addis in Cape". The decor was unique in that the tables are all rattan with removable high pitched top "hats". Once the top is off a round plastic surface of a diameter of nearly 24 inches remains.

We looked at the menu and decided the very reasonable price of 2 selections/Rand 70 would be the way to go. We ordered 2 "spicy" and 2 "non-spicy" meat choices plus a side of Yogurt.

Now being of a nature that still thinks a meal should come quickly, I began to wonder after 30 minutes if they were out back killing the beef or fishing for the prawns. I forget that "TIA" This is Africa!

Finally our very pleasant and helpful server appeared with a pitcher and bowl which were used to perform a ceremonial cleaning of our hands. Then came a round platter that fit snugly into the top of the table. The reason for the plastic surface became clear. On closer observation, it was apparent that the lovely dishes of heavenly smelling food were resting on some form of an edible pancake. It filled the entire platter. I was totally happy with this when our server then poured each dish out on this base and pointed us to some white , thinly rolled up bread. She left and we dug in. Everything is intended to be scooped up with pieces of the rolled bread and then dipped into the yogurt. Yum !!!!

Such a wonderful surprise and absolutely delicious. We had the coffee afterward and I had to take a picture of my husband drinking his coffee as the incense spiraled over his head (a small coffee tradition).

We would absolutely go back as the food was really good. Lots more to try!

“Favorite restaurant of our trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

We really loved this spot! We found out about it from a local tour guide when I mentioned I was vegetarian. It was perfect! The decor was beautiful and we loved the authentic seating and friendly staff that brought warm towels and reviewed the whole menu with us. We thought the variety of options and the chance to try a little bit of everything was great! We loved the flavors and literally couldn't stop eating. Really great spot in Cape Town and some of the best Ethiopian food we have had. Thanks Addis!

“Delicious and something different!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

The service here was very good, the waiter explained the menu and recommended the set menu as this was our first time here. Everything that came out of the kitchen was amazing!

We waited about 20 minutes between the starter and the main course, but this was actually a good thing as the main was very large! The novelty of eating with your hands was fun and the rice flour Injera (pancake style bread that you use to eat with) were something we hadn't tried before.

the main dishes were incredibly tasty, full of different flavours. The starter and desert were equally enjoyable, and the coffee with popcorn and frankincense to finish was just what we needed!

Woudl highly recommend this restaurant to anyone staying/visiting/living in Cape Town, or even just passing through. If you're after something a bit different, very tasty, and a fun experience, then check this place out!

“Great dining experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

As you enter the restaurant....you seem to be transported to a different place...addis. The decor is great in achieving this.

The food is Ethiopian ... Very tasty and you are supposed to share, and eat with your fingers. They also have some great (very strong) coffee which is usually served with popcorn!!! The set menu is a good option as it allows you to taste a variety of different servings. Lots of vegetarian options as well.

I went on a weekday and it was a little quiet.
