“Visit the café in the backyard!”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

The museum is so-so, but the café is very cozy, located in the backyard with big trees and next to the oldest existing church in Cape Town.
We had lunch and enjoyed it with a glass of wine - everything being above expectations.

“Interesting visit”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

Found the museum very informative. The layout was great and the information was very interesting. Seeing all the old gold jewellery was really intereting too.

“Swiss touch”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

Barbier Mueller maintains this very very rich museum.
A history lesson followed by the most exquisite african tribal gold jewelry.
My favourite museum in Cape Town.
There used to be a restaurant there also, but it was closed when we went.
I assume it would be a good one, as the collection in mintly presented and the museum shop was top quality also.

“Watch the Movie, Skip the Museum”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

This would have been a huge disappointment if not for a really good movie about the history of gold (about 30 minutes long). The museum contains a couple of floors of gold trinkets and - perhaps the biggest surprise - only the usual tourist junk in the small shop - no gold souvenirs! It's close to the Bo Kaap neighborhood, so if you happen to be there (highly recommended), it's easy to drop in here. But I would not go out of my way to visit it. BTW, there's a small discount if you show a Hop-On Hop-Off bus ticket receipt; it does not need to be from that same day.

“Overrated”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

Reading all the reviews here I would maybe give it a go. We went because I read an insider tip in our guide. It took us about fifteen minutes in total to see some not so amazing artifacts. Sorry, but this was pretty much a waste of our time. You dont miss anything when you skip this, also it seems the restaurant has moved somewhere else and there we're no people at the workshop.
