Primi Royal
Ranked #8 of 12 Hotels in Camps Bay
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 23, 2012

We have just returned from two weeks in South Africa and had to write my first Trip advisor review for the Primi Royal to tell everyone how great it is.

The Primi team are really friendly and ready to help you with anything. I emailed the hotel before going to ask some advice about how best to get to Camps Bay from Cape Town Airport and Liberty really kindly organised us an airport transfer for a reasonable R350. When we arrived, we were greeted by Andrew who was always available to advise us on things to do.

Our room was great and had a lovely view of the sea, which was nice to wake up to every morning.

We used the Hop On Hop Off bus for two days to get around Cape Town, which was really great to see everything although it does take quite a long time to get back to Camps Bay from, say the Waterfront, as you go through the town and either up Table Mountain or via the vineyards. The buses also stop running quite early so you couldn't, for example, have dinner in Cape Town and then get the bus back to Camps Bay. However, given that there are lots of great restaurants in Camps Bay that's no problem!

We did ask Andrew to organise us a taxi to the Waterfront on our last day and he linked us up with Isaac de Wet who is the friendliest taxi driver we have ever met. It only cost R120 for the trip and we didn't stop talking the whole way. I would really recommend that you use Isaac if you need a taxi anywhere and the Primi team have his number handy if you need it.

Hi Ammie
Great to have you both with us.
We really do love being of assistance to our guests, so arranging things for you was our pleasure.
PS: When staff are mentioned on Tripadvisor they have grins from ear to ear! :-))))))))))))

We arrived early in the morning and were immediately greeted by Andrew who made us feel welcome and offered us coffee while our room was being checked out. We didn't expect to be checked in then as other guests were still having breakfast but this was not a problem.
Our room was on the second floor and was quite basic (needed a refurb really). The view was great though! The hotel is situated well for restaurants and also easy to drive to and from.
There is Internet available but you have to ask for a voucher and it can be painfully slow. Luckily we only use it to check emails and keep in touch with home.
I would recommend this hotel to others, although anyone who can't easily manage stairs, please be aware that there are loads of them in this hotel and they cannot be avoided!

Location - Following a well organised transfer from the airport we arrrived at our hotel which is in Camps Bay in the southern suburbs. The southern section of Cape Town is a wealthy part of the city and is in a lovely location with the beach and a wide range of excellent restaurants.

We discovered that either taxi or driving took about 20/25 minutes from the waterfront and say 10/15 minutes to Table Mountain. If you are heading down towards say the Cape of Good Hope then you are on the main road in a few minutes.

The hotel is not on the sea front but set back slightly behind. This still allows you to see the beach front but without the traffic and crowds.

As Trailfinders state the hotel is in a slightly hilly area and contains a few steps (this is the case from the street and small number of steps were encountered on the first floor) and if a mobility is an issue you may need to consider another hotel.

The hotel - There are about 5 parking spaces but on the day we had access to a car this was never an issue.

You report to the reception area on the first floor which includes a small business room that you can use, sofas, bar and tables where you will have your breakfast. This room leads to a patio and a plunge pool. However the main feature is the view of a Lion Mountain and the beach.

After booking in we were taken to our room on the first floor. The room was a good size and comprised satellite TV which seemed to pick up about four channels (a recurring theme in touring SA), desk with chair, another chair, bed, bedside cabinets and built in wardrobe (including a safe). The bed was wonderful and I cannnot recall such a goodnight's sleep for such a long time.

There were spotlights in the ceiling which lightened the room. I wish hotels in the UK and US did the same, you often wonder if they have such poor lighting so the guests will go out and therefore not clutter the room.

The room was clean but we suspect could possibly do with a small amount of TLC.

There is a bathroom including a shower. Two points here the first again relates to mobility and the bath has a higher lip to get in when compared to most baths in the UK and so maybe an issue. However this may not apply to all bathrooms and you may want to check with the hotel. Also personally I could have done with a light over the sink to assist with shaving.
The room had a view across to the beach. The room also overlooked a main road from the front but the noise was never an issue.

Staff - here the the staff were superb especially Andrew and Zane e.g. they arranged the tickets for Table Mountain. Further, Zane told us about Simon's Town Boat Compayt and their whaling trips (not cheap but worth it). Zane and Andew spent the best part of a day trying to contact the boat company to make a reservation. Note they didn't take any money but merely made the reservation. Zane also spent quite some time giving advice and guidance as to what to see and where to go. Also they would organise a taxi when required.

The breakfasts were excellent and with the view made a great start to the day.

The hotel does not provide evening meals but as stated you have a wide range of restaurants, including a Primi to choose from.

So if you are looking for a great hotel then the Primi should be on your list and you will enjoy your stay.

Hello lovely people! Thank you so very very much for the really good review about the hotel - & Camps Bay too. So much appreciated. You were such enquiring & attentive guests that it was truly a pleasure for me to help you with your local travel plans. TLC taking place as I speak ;-)

PS: Andrew is thrilled to have his name mentioned & with a huge grin on his face & in that quiet, monotone voice of his, he says "oh - please tell them I say thank you..." :-D

My best regards & hope to see you both again sometime!

My boyfriend and I had a one-night stay in Camps Bay during our time in Cape Town and were really glad that we decided to spend it at Primi Royal. The location was fantastic as the hotel is just off the main strip so its nice and quiet but still has spectacular views of the Bay and is only a couple of minutes walk to the beach and all the restaurants, shops and cafes (we highly recommend the Codfather for dinner!). We checked the prices of what seemed like all of the hotels in the area before booking and Primi really was excellent value for money.

Our room was clean and quite large with a lovely big bed and bath - although the best part was definitely the balcony! You really do have plenty of space for enjoying the sunset or having a bit of a sunbake. There isn't much privacy between each room's balcony as they all share the same terrace, but we never saw anyone else the whole time we were there. Check in and out was quick and easy and service was polite. Parking is on a first come-first served basis (I think there were 3 or 4 designated parks but apparently there is also street parking) but we didn't have any problems.

For a comfortable stay with lovely views, I would definitely recommend Primi Royal.

Hi Guys - Thank you for the great review!
So good to have some Aussies with us for change!
PS: We have 5 under-building covered parking bays & 3 open bays directly in front on building = 8 - so very rarely have parking problems. Plenty of street parking too!
Thank you once again & regards

Following a disastrous sequence of events at Whale Cottage a few hundred metres up the road (where we had booked, paid a deposit, been left waiting outside for one hour in the cold, and then subject to unspeakable rudeness by the owner) we decided to forfeit our deposit and seek alternative accommodation.

At Primi Royal we were greeted by Liberty who was friendly, efficient and most helpful in attending to our reservation enquiries. He showed us a number of extremely pleasant rooms and then upgraded us to a luxury suite. This contrast in treatment made memories of the Whale Cottage experience quickly fade.

There are a number of positives regarding staying at Primi Royal, namely:
Great staff;
Short walking distance to Camps Bay beach and restaurants;
Clean, nicely appointed rooms;
Good value;
Very good breakfast.

I have no hesitation in recommending it as one of the best four-star establishments in Camps Bay.

We had a great time staying here on a Boys' (rugby) weekend in August 2012. Great value, fantastic centralized location, friendly and acommodating service.

The hotel organized transfers to and from the airport, which also went very smoothly. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are fantastic!

Location: Set a road back from the beach front so you don't get all the traffic noise. 5min walk from shops, restaurants, supermarket and hop-on/hop-off bus stop.
Hotel: Very very nice! Reception/lounge/dining room is on the first floor with a balcony and pool overlooking the sea.
Parents stayed in room 1 on 1st floor. They had a roll top bath in the bedroom and their own personal swimming pool and a sea view.
Sister stayed in room 9 on top floor. Had a 4 poster bed and 2 whole glass walls with balcony and views of the sea.
We stayed in room 10 on the top floor. We had a 4 poster bed and a jacuzzi on our balcony which overlooked the sea.
All rooms had tea and coffee facilities, tv, dvd player and stereo.
Breakfast was great. Cereals, croissants, toast and cooked.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.
