“Jewel on The Cape - Beautiful Coastal Resort!”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

The 12 Apostles Hotel & Spa (aka 12A) was the best place to start off our South African adventure.

12A is nestled below the 12 Apostles mountain range in Camps Bay, South Africa. The resort has an unobstructed 180°sweeping view of the coastline and the mountains. The hotel is elegant and luxurious, and is run at the height of efficiency, while still giving off a friendly, unstuffy vibe that allows you to relax and really feel like you are on vacation. The staff is very welcoming and friendly.

Our suite faced the ocean on the north wing of the hotel. The rooms are very large, almost as big as my first apartment in LA. The rooms had fine linens and amenities. The large bathrooms don’t seem like an afterthought, as they do in most hotels. There were fruit and nibbles in the room, as well as complimentary bottled water. Turn down service always came with a sweet treat.

The breakfast buffet in the Azure Restaurant is bountiful and worth getting up for in the morning. My husband enjoyed raw oysters and shrimp. We had an amazing dinner experience at the Azure as well. We had springbok for the first time as part of a prix fixe sampler for dinner, and it was sublime. The service is excellent as well, with a smiling wait staff, especially Elton. We enjoyed a traditional high tea in the Leopard Bar. Their tea service for two is more suitable for four, unless you haven’t eaten all day.

Our touring schedule was quite full, so we didn’t get a chance to enjoy the pool, spa, or hiking trails in the hills behind the hotels. Also, there is a movie screening room that seemed to be very popular, but we couldn’t make time for it. 12A is about 20-30 minutes from the V&A Waterfront and the hub of town, which for me, added to its allure. However, the hotel runs a free shuttle service to town every hour.

I wish we could have stayed longer. Maybe next time.

Room Tip: If it is within your price range, pick a ground floor ocean-facing room on the north end.

Dear Trip Advisor Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at the Twelve Apostles hotel & Spa with our potential future guests.

We are very fortunate with the wonderful location of the “12A” as we have Table mountain in our back yard and the Atlantic Ocean glistening in the front with arguably the best sunset in the city.
We pride ourselves with the personalised and attentive service to make each guest feel like royalty. Breakfast is always a high light in the Azure and we have something for everyone to indulge for the all-important first meal of the day.

Our version of the traditional afternoon tea “Tea by the Sea” is also a firm favourite of many guests and local residents and very happy to read that you enjoyed the treats.

On your next visit to us, hopefully very soon I would recommend a few days of just relaxing around the hotel to catch a movie or hike up the mountain with a picnic or just soaking up some of the sun next to the Atlantic pool.

We look forward to welcoming you back very soon.

Warm Regards,

Horst W. Frehse

Whilst taking lunch with friends in the Azure Restaurant (27th October 2013) my wife became rather unwell and had to leave the table as she felt very sick and close to passing out.
Whilst we were sitting outside the restaurant, and without any prompting, Gavin Ferriera the Restaurant Manager quickly came to find me and to enquire about my wife and offered to assist in any way possible.
She felt she needed to lie down quietly somewhere and he very kindly and quickly found a room for her to rest. He also offered herbal tea, cool towels etc. to help her recover.
Fortunately she made a good recovery after an hour or so, thanks in no small part to Gavin’s kindness, and this incident has very much enhanced the already high estimation in which we hold this lovely hotel and all its wonderful and gracious staff.

Recently spent five nights at 12 Apostles at the beginning of a two week African vacation. This hotel was a really good start to our trip as the staff was absolutely impeccable. Don't remember such attentive service at any hotel regardless of price. These people know the meaning of what being a hotelier is. Every request was met with a quiet but efficient response with the right touch. Booked a winelands tour for us as well as dinner at two fine restaurants in Camps Bay. The breakfast buffet was excellent as was the dinner in Azure. Overall, this place cannot be beat even though it is a little ways out from the center of Capetown.

I have been to the Twelve Apostles many times, usually for dinner but also just for drinks. The hotel is stunning, the spa you have to see to believe, like an underground grotto, it looks amazing and treatments offered are extensive. The views are stunning, either the sea view from the front or mountains to the rear, awesome!

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view room, be sure to hang out on the upper balcony from the bar

12A as it is known by those who have been lucky enough to stay is undoubtedly my favourite hotel in the world! Elegant, creative, luxurious and friendly. Although located out of the center of Cape Town the transfer is worth the effort. The views of both sea and mountain are spectacular, even in bad weather. The breakfast buffet offers oysters and champagne, the best of fresh fruit SA has to offer and an amazing cooked breakfast. The fine dining is superb. The Atlantic Terrace - the hotels marquee function room is an awesome venue for private lunches, weddings (perspex Tiffany chairs - would make cinderella envious) or corporate presentations. The flowers (supplied by The Duke & Dutchess Florist), are inspirational. At this time of year the combination of Protea and Roses is a treat. The rooms are incredibly comfortable, finest of linen, pillow menu, all the amenities one could think of, not to mention the spa, the movie theatre and the pool! Add this gem to your South African itinerary you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: The cost of rooms depends on the views - so sea facing is the way to go, but if the budget is a conc...

"No request too small and no detail too large". Apparently, that is the motto for the Red Carnation hotel group, which this hotel is part of. Well, they certainly put this into practice. I have just stayed there for four nights with my wife on vacation. From when we arrived at the hotel lobby to when we left, the staff made us feel so welcome, it felt like a second home. Always asking how we were and if we were enjoying our stay, they could not have done any more to ensure that we had everything that we needed.
The sea facing room was simply superb. Tastefully furnished and extremely well equipped. There was nothing that we had to ask for. My wife has stayed in many hotels all over the world and she commented that she has never stayed in such a well stocked hotel room. From fruit, drinks, nibbles, toiletries to equipment, everything was provided. There was even a comprehensive stock of office stationary in the desk. An abundance of luxurious furnishings and individual pictures made the room feel like an individually decorated apartment.
Wherever we walked in the hotel, all the staff we met would say hello with courtesy. A nice touch.
We enjoyed superb breakfasts in the Azure restaurant but unfortunately did not take the opportunity to eat there during the evening. But the menu looked very enticing.
Then there is the Leopard Bar on the upper floor. A great place for an evening drink and to watch the sun set over the bay. Again, the staff were impeccable. But one barman in particular was very endearing. His name is Elton and was very good company. Thank you Elton if you read this review. We will always remember you and your smile!
We didn't use the spa or gym facilities, although they looked excellent. (Too busy climbing mountains)! So I have not rated them in this review.
So, if you want to enjoy the very best in hospitality in Cape Town, then The Twelve Apostles is the place to go. It is about twenty minutes down the coastline from the centre of town. If you wish to remain in the hub of activity then fine. But we found it very relaxing to visit the centre of Cape Town and then to return to the tranquility of the Twelve Apostles to relax. Especially as the hotel runs a complimentary shuttle service to and from Camps Bay and the V & A Waterfront every hour.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room if you wish to watch sunsets from your own balcony. Garden rooms face the T...
