“Wonderful stay”
Reviewed January 18, 2010

Enjoyed 8 nights at The Retreat over Xmas. Staff always helpful and obliging. Rooms were lovely and cleaned beautifully. Full English breakfasts were fab and served with a smile by our favourite Londo. Tennis court was great as were the gardens and bike hire was provided promptly when asked for. Only thing we missed out on were the hotel dogs which were advertised on the website but had gone on holiday during our stay. Camps Bay itself is a great place to stay if coming to Cape Town. A huge sandy beach (although sea is cold and has a strongish current) Camps Bay is a mini Miami full of fitness fanatics by day and fun loving hedonists at night. The restaurants are all good value and we didn't have a bad meal during our stay. The Bayside was our favourite together with slightly more expensive ones such as The Grand and Codfather. Clifton Beach is worth walking along to as well as Llandudno Beach a short drive in the opposite direction.

This was our second visit to this hotel. Our room was located in the main building and it was beautiful with sea viws. The bathroom was massive and very impressive. It is very peaceful in the hotel as it is away form the hussle and bussle of Camps Bay sea front. This is an important consideration over the Christmas period as the locals use the beach on public holidays .... and they arrive in hundreds!!! During our stay the owners of the hotel were away and their overall mamagement was missing and noticeable. There seemed to be a number of 'new' managers and training managers which meant that some standards slipped e.g used glasses were left on tables for hours, waiters had unironed shirts and struggled with orders. The fish pond was green and old serviettes floated in it. The BBQ evening was not as we expected as there was no choice at all on the menu. The chef came to our table to explain the BBQ. But the dessert and starter was bland , with the main meal being T Boned steak and sausages. We then ate in the Bay Hotel where the food was excellent.( The Camps Bay Retreat offers a free taxi service there). We later had lunch at Camps Bay Retreat and it was good apart from the waiter being unable to find any chilled bottled water. The owners need to be on hand!!!!!

I treated my wife to a very special night here. We live 10 minutes away and have travelled the world looking for the kind of setting, luxury and service that we found on our doorstep. This is truly one of the best boutique hotel experiences in the world. The setting, facilities and service are amongst the best I have ever experienced, and the food is better than 95% of all hotels and restaurants in Cape Town. I can say this unreservedly as I have been to any restaurant worth going to in CT.

This is a winner!

We spent four nights at the Camps Bay Retreat in April having taken the train from Johannesburg to Capetown. Unfortunately our hire car in Capetown didn't show up and the office for the rental firm was closed and their helpline told us we would have to come back the following day. We took a taxi to Camps Bay Retreat and they offered to resolve the issue for us - a hire car arrived from our rental company within the hour. This is indicative of their style and service - nothing is too much trouble and everything is quietly efficient.

The food was great, offering a good selection of tasty and very well presented dishes. They also made an effort to prepare special dishes for my husband who is vegetarian which were a far cry from the usual spinach and ricotta pasta options.

They have a nice cosy library room with books and photos of the house, as well as an outdoor terrace / restaurant / bar.

The location with beautiful gardens and views down to the ocean is good for both Camps Bay with its nice restaurants and bars, the cable car up Table Mountain, and also a short ride into Capetown. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about places to eat out in Capetown and further afield. We were not feeling too good one evening and staff happily brought room service up to our room in the Deck House (via a rope bridge) at no extra charge.

A brilliant place for a few days of luxurious relaxation. We came on the recommendation of a friend and would in turn thoroughly recommend the place.

Stayed at Camps Bay Retreat Hotel for 5 days whilst on honeymoon. We'd travelled from Mauritius where we'd "completely" chilled out after the wedding. This hotel was fantastic. Unbelievable setting in its own nature reserve, and breakfast is served outside on the porch with te roar of the waves echoing and visible straight ahead. The breakfast itself was 1st class. Everything cooked to order....a grea way to start the day.

Hotel is private and secure. We stayed in the main "Dyke Manor" building. Rooms are elegant, and the staff make you feel like Lord's and Ladies of the Manor !!!! Other newer residences are within the complex across a rope bridge. They look beautiful as well

Within a short walk to the main Camps Bay area. Wonderful bars and restaurants along the Promenade. Definately try "The Kove" - Far better than "Blues" which was recommended to us.

I hope to return to South Africa / Cape Town someday in the future, and would definately return to this hotel again. It was a special end to a wonderful honeymoon !!!!

We returned after 3 years because we loved the location, rooms and views. Location, views, breakfasts and meal service were still excellent. We stayed in a Deck House with wonderful views but the cleanliness was not brilliant and the rooms starting to look shabby and in need of some TLC! Main problem was with the booking, as when we arrived we were told that the dates we had booked and had confirmed(9-16 Feb) were not available and we would have to move to The Bay Hotel on 12 Feb. We said we wouldn't move and after some heated discussions, we stayed! There was no apology for stress caused and the reception staff were far from displaying good standards of customer service - no smiles-no "hello, how are you today---". At these prices, we expect much better. Would not return and would not recommend.
