I fell in love with this property just over 2 years ago and even had our fairytale-like wedding there. We made the guest list small enough so that we could fit into this perfect location - it's nestled in a private nature reserve with a cascading pool from the turn of the century hidden in the lush surroundings. Ask Ben, Bella and Wanda (very attentive hotel dogs) to accompany you there ;-) The chef, Robyn, is phenomenal - she is young, dynamic and knows where to source the best produce. My recommendation - for dinner try the chalmar beef with a perfect pepper sauce. The wine selection is also fab and not ridiculously priced. The rooms are diverse - in the Earl's Dyke (Manor House) you'll find rooms which stay true to the style of the house - old romantic and great art collection throughout. The rooms across the hanging bridge are more modern - room 6 is an apartment essentially and great for longer stays. The tennis court is the only privately owned one I know of on the Atlantic Seaboard and you can watch the sunset over the ocean as you perfect your serve.

Room Tip: Room 6 is perfect for longer stays (across the bridge) as it's an apartment with a full kitchen.

First trip to Camps Bay and the Retreat
It will not be our last if at all possible
I don't believe I have ever experienced such a team of guest-focussed staff at any hotel in the world
From the initial greeting by Kirstin to the final goodbye from Robyn every single member of staff went out of their way to make this a memorable stay
Very much a home from home - even down to the dogs!
Word of advice to potential guests - do NOT start playing "fetch" with Wanda if you have plans for the rest of the day!!
Thanks to all there including Ben - the best coffee maker we have yet met in South Africa!

Thank you so much for taking the time to review Camps Bay Retreat.

It is great to know this was a memorable experience for you. Camps Bay Retreat team takes pride in knowing that we made you stay special, even if it was the first cup of coffee for the day. Wanda is surely missing her daily game of fetch.

We wish you all the best.

Hope to see you in the near future.

My son and daughter-in-law had an absolutely wonderful time on their week-end away from Friday 31st August to Sunday 2nd September 2012.

From the initial booking to saying goodbye on Sunday their experience was great.

Siobhan and Kirsty as the first 2 contacts and all the rest of the team at the retreat were very friendly and caring.

I would recommend the Camps Bay retreat without reservation as they really lived up to their promises in the romatic getaway advertisement.

This is a place that caters for the young and old (old but young at heart). The rooms, food, service and all the little caring extras were outstanding.

This romantic getaway which included a sun-downer canapes' and cocktail, 40 minute couples massage and spa bath, 3 course dinner, fabulous room and breakfast to die for was well worth the cost. In fact it was exceptional according to Ralph and Lameez.

With greatful thanks

Yvonne and Mario Sickle

My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. We used a travel agent to plan the stay, but I noticed there were some very romantic packages online that I wanted to make our stay that much better. It included flowers, a homemade treat, a romantic turndown service and wine. To make sure nothing went wrong, we not only told our travel agent, we got an email from the hotel management confirming, we called them as our plane landed, and we talked to them in person upon arriving to the hotel.

THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH! The receptionist and the manager refused to give us the package saying they had no idea what we were talking about. We soon just said, forget it! But why should we do that? I talked to someone different the next day and he apologized. We did get the package, but we were in the room while they were doing it. Our stay there was less than romantic.

The male receptionist was amazing! I have never met a more professional and efficient hotel host before. He had dark, spiky hair with glasses (sorry I can't remember your name). But you alone get 5 stars!

We had planned the trip in Feb. 2012, seven months in advance. Disappointing. We also ended up cancelling our Romantic Spa package just because the mood had drained from all the went wrong. We just stayed in our hotel room instead.

The staff told us different things on how to exit the hotel. And finally on the 2nd afternoon we had to call the front desk in order to get out.

Yes, the hotel was pretty and the scenery was nice too, but that was it. Many come here to have a nice romantic stay, and if you are looking for that, don't stay here. This trip ended up being just a normal hotel stay, nothing more.

We wanted room service on our first night, but was told that the kitchen was closed. At 5pm??? I was sick and not feeling, so we had to go out to dinner instead. Needless to say we were plain mad on the first day. Apparently we were told wrong AGAIN, and we could have ordered room service the whole time. BUT... when we were able to order food the following day, I was impressed.

We were in a superior room. The bathroom was gorgeous, but the bed was extremely hard. We stayed for 4 nights and had neck and back pains after.

The cleanliness of the room was up to standard. The cleaning service did a wonderful job on that.

All in all, it would have been a 4 star hotel, but we were promised so much more and since this was supposed to be a luxury and romantic experience promised by the hotel, and plus there were many disappointments along the way, they get the low rating.

Dear valued guest,

Thank you for your feedback in regards to standards of rooms, food quality and cleanliness. I have reported back to housekeeping and restaurant staff that they are doing a great job.

Please accept our sincere apologize for the miscommunication between us and your travel agent regarding your special occasion, this matter is seen in a very serious light and we have taken the matter up with staff members involved.

We realize that no amount of apologies can make up for the less than romantic experience which you expected from us, but we do hope that you will allow us a future visit to make up for this.

Please contact the hotel Reservations Manager, Carla October, directly res@campsbayretreat.com if you are on holiday in Cape Town again as we look forward to exceed all your expectations on the next visit.

Kind Regards

My husband and I stayed at the Camps Bay Retreat in August for the first few nights of our honeymoon. We were in one of the luxury rooms, which we thought was gorgeous - heated flooring, huge comfortable bed, enormous bathroom and plenty of privacy. The staff were friendly and welcoming and gave us plenty of nice surprises for our honeymoon, and we loved the hotel's friendly dogs too. We had a very relaxing massage in the hotel spa, which was very welcome after a long overnight flight. Dinner was delicious and served in a cosy room with a fireplace. My only criticism of this is that the menu didn't change much from day to day, and as I am vegetarian I ended up eating the same thing a few times. However I suspect that they may have made me something else if I'd asked. The main garden overlooks the sea and there is a route down to the beach and the main street in Camps Bay. Camps Bay itself seemed very nice, with bars and restaurants and a beautiful white sandy beach. The area felt pretty safe, though we didn't venture down there late at night. All in all, we thought the Camps Bay Retreat was a great place for a romantic stay - a beautiful, unique place that is small enough to have friendly, personal service. Great for honeymooners!

I am sure this place is lovely when the sun is shining. We, however, were not lucky enough to stay here in good weather. It was very cold and very windy. After asking 2 days in a row for an extra form of heating in the room, none was provided except for 2 hot water bottles in the bed. Sadly, this was not good enough as they are no curtains and the windows/blind combination let air/wind into the room. They have an ancient air con unit in the bedrooms that grinds grumpily away making more noise that we could sleep with. At the prices being charged I see no reason why one should not be warm and comfortable. Sadly the hotel was not bothered. It would appear the girls managing the Front Desk were 'interns' and not up to sorting out or reporting freezing, miserable guests. I had to twist my neck to get any view other than the house next door and the main road. Wet, slippery wooden stairs were not conducive to unbroken ankles. Breakfast is a sort of afterthought. A massage was conducted in yet another freezing room with a log fire that smoked and burned the eyes. I was offered 20% off this after I complained. Not really good enough in my view. I don't go on holiday to complain. I go to rest, read, sleep and look around. The room I was given, No 10, took the full brunt of the hurricane winds over Camps Bay. I cannot recommend it. Both my son and my rooms lighting system was infathomable so, despite asking if they could be fixed, we both had to sleep with flickering LEDs on all night. After 2 nights with little sleep I was glad to leave.

Room Tip: Ask if they have rooms with a seaview.....

Dear Hotel Reviewer,

Thank you for your valuable feedback regarding you stay at Camps Bay Retreat. We welcome all constructive criticism as it assists us to improve our services.

Camps Bay Retreat is a private nature reserve and as such we try to keep it as a forested as possible. Cape Town is a winter rainfall area and it was unfortunate that you had to experience inclement weather conditions during you stay. We do try to keep the hotel as warm as possible with wood burning fires.

We are always looking for ways to improve the comfort of our guests and the problems you experienced with our air conditioning unit and LED lighting have been addressed by our Facilities Manager.

Your feedback regarding the quality of our breakfast has been discussed with Management and will in future be closely monitored to ensure better guest satisfaction.

The Front Desk personnel are carefully selected trainees who are young but always willing to do their best. Clearly they were not performing to the expected standards during your visit and for this we apologise most sincerely.

We do however trust that you enjoyed your stay at our sister property, The Bay Hotel, and hope that we will be able to welcome you back to our group in the future.

Warm regards,
Graeme Smith
