“Spacious family apartment perfectly situated”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

We stayed in a very spacious and comfortable two bedroomed apartment right on the beach. The furniture was new and the beds comfortable and the linen clean. The Staff were very friendly and this is an ideal place to explore Cape Town from. Plenty good restaurants close by where you can watch the sun set. The beach is very clean and popular, even in winter for beautiful walks.

Room Tip: Room 301 worked well for us as it was on two floors with a nice big patio on the ground floor.

We stayed for two weeks in July. The best part was the view and quick check in. The rooms are quite dated ( old couch and chairs etc.), old time share rooms (think of a 80's look) and smelled like fresh paint. Due to off season, I suppose, maintenance was being carried out. At booking we should have been informed that the on site restaurant was closed. One receptionist is more helpful and doesn't blatantly lie about trying to help, I might mix the names to the person otherwise I would post her name here. Furthermore bring along your own adapter as one was not available to us and when asked they couldn't provide one for the entire stay, with the excuse of "guests already have them and have not returned them as yet." Besides this their guest service books claims to offer service that is not provided ( like the adapter issue). The "heater" had to be requested after arriving to an apartment that was freezing because housekeeping opens every window (and it's winter). Don't let this place be your first choice.

I stayed at The place on the Bay with my wife in August and it was simply the perfect start to our 10 day vacation in SA.

Perfectly situated across the road from the Ocean (literally) and very close to many restaurants and cafes lined up facing the ocean.

What I also liked is the privacy you get since you don't have to pass by the reception on your way in or out.

Very friendly staff, loved every minute of it.

We stayed for 5 nights, the staff were very friendly and the manager is very helpful.we felt at home and the apartment provides a perfect base to visit Cape Town from,we had restaurants within minutes walking or we had decent facilities to stay in and cater for ourselves.some of the negative reviews are totally out of order,if you go on holiday to sit in your room and use wifi then maybe it isn't for you, otherwise it's perfect!

We stayed here for 4 nights 16th-20th may.
Check in was quick and efficient, and staff instantly ready to help with luggage to room.
We had an upstairs balcony, a downstairs balcony and doors that opened onto the pool area, kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, a main bathroom and a downstairs shower/toilet room. More than adequate for two of us :) balconies were great for watching the fantastic sunsets.
Rooms were all kept very clean. The showers weren't the strongest but that was not a problem.
Ate breakfast at the adjoining italian restaurant one morning and it was good.
All in all everything was great, we just had one tiny niggle.
In general we found the reception staff super helpful. Werner in particular. That was until we booked our shark dive. We had tried to do this online but had no reply from them, so asked Werner if he could help. He was excellent calling them immediately for us and making the booking. He said that the shark dive company had asked him to take a R660 DEPOSIT for them, and he would give it to them in the morning when we got picked up. This was fine by us and what we expected. In the morning of our shark dive we checked out as we were moving hotel that day. When we left we were given the envelope containing our deposit to pass on to the shark dive company. We had changed our mind on how we were going to pay and decided to do so via credit card instead of cash, so opened our deposit envelope to put our cash away. When we opened it we found a typed letter from Werner and R40 (we had given him R700 to keep hold of as we didn't have the change to make R660) saying that here was R40 towards our dive as the guy from the shark company had told him to keep the R660 as a commission. Now we had no problem with him getting a commission, as obviously the shark company had told him to do so, we were just really disappointed that he told us it was a deposit and wasn't just honest enough to say it was his commission. When we went back to collect our car which we were kindly allowed to leave in the carpark Werner was not there, and we didn't want to kick up a fuss so we left it.
I haven't contacted the hotel on this matter as I emailed them a couple of times before we stayed there, and got no reply.

As I said, the hotel its self and everything else was impeccable and I cannot fault it, just book excursions yourself!

5 nights
Room 204
We arrived around 10:30pm after a 18hour journey. It was nice to see they have a lock up courtyard parking station. Check in was hassle free, quick and the staff so friendly and helpful. No lifts to the rooms so a few stairs to climb, not so hard without the bags. The staff are willing to help you with the bags.
204 is one of the rooms right at the front of the building overlooking the road, beach and hotel pool. A nice surprise on entering the room. It is very spacious, extremely clean and decorated in beiges and whites. Tiled floors, skylight with shades that can be rolled back in the main part of the room, a sofa, coffee table and the bed is comfortable with plenty of cushions and warm quilt. There is a small verandah with a small outdoor setting where you can sit and watch the most beautiful sunsets. One thing that does need to be looked at on the verandah is the wooden railing. Not sure how, but it looks like like someone has broken it by falling against it. It has become unstable and maybe a little dangerous especially if someone pushes up against it too hard.
The kitchen is well equipped. Microwave, stove, toaster, kettle, china, glassware and cutlery including cooking utensils. If you intend to cook you have what you need.
The bathroom is a good size. Basic toiletries but no hair dryer. The shower is in the bath and a little narrow. The shower spout isn't that strong so you feel cold having a shower. One thing I have noticed in most hotels there is always in some form of mould in the grout it's one thing the cleaners don't pay attention to.
The cleaner does a wonderful job and doesn't cut any corners. The room is left spotless every day. She even goes as far as folding any clothes that are left on the suitcase or floor she puts shoes together, stacks all holiday info together and puts everything back in its place. Housekeeping A+.
There is no free wifi in the room but there is a lounge in the Fairways Hotel where there is wifi. You can purchase vouchers with different amounts of air time starting from 20R and connection is very good.
In our package breakfast was included to the value of 80R/person. breakfast is in the Capperno restaurant attached to the hotel, and it was a generous serve. On the Monday of our stay the restaurant was closed but staff sent up a tray of muesli, fruit, yogurt, croissants and jam for breakfast. With 160R we got 2 cappuccino, a glass of juice, a big breakfast with sausages, 2 eggs, mushroom, tomatoes and bacon and 2eggs with smoked salmon on a bed of lettuce a few slices of tomato, caramelised onion. Came with 2 slices of toast each and jams etc.
The restaurants and bars begin at the corner so many of them and we didn't feel unsafe walking at night. It would take less than 10 minutes to walk the length of the street. They do have a supermarket (PicknPay) at the end of the street.
I only have minor complaints which really didn't affect our stay and they were no hair dryer, the damaged railing, the light amount of mould in the shower area and would of liked a larger shower but when you have a limited amount of space you can only do what you can. I really don't understand some of the negative reviews I have read by some travellers, even with these few complaints our stay was just excellent.

Room Tip: A few suggestions if you don't like the sound of the waves crashing on the beach maybe ask for o...

We stayed In Fairways On The Bay for 9 days in March which is part of Place On the Bay,infact i would call it an annexe, decribed as boutique in all the brochures! We were recommended by friends who have stayed at Place on the Bay before and when we could not book there because of availability were happy to go next door to the Fairways. We had been in South Africa for 3 weeks previous to arriving at Camps Bay,and had excellent B&B accomodation(4/5 Star) at a number of places and were really looking forward to our final week in the Cape Town area.

When we arrived and were shown to our room I have to say initially we were very disappointed, this is an old house converted into accomodation and is certainly not boutique. To be fair the room was very comfortable with a balcony and side view of the beach and once we got used to it I guess it was OK,but needs some updating to classify it as boutique. The Italian restaurant within the complex was excellent and good value, and the position of Fairways was good, just off the busy main road but still close to the beach.

The position of Place On The Bay and its small pool all just across the road from the beach together with all the restaurants and bars so close was excellent, and the staff were very helpful and attentive.
Our last night we moved into Place On the Bay and one of the two storey apartments which was very nice and well equipped, with a balcony and great views of the beach, but as commented by another of your subscribers was "tired"and in need of some modernisation.

When we return to SA which we will at some point and go back to Camps Bay would we stay there again?.....yes certainly at Place On the Bay and in a couple of years time hopefully some updating will have taken place to the apartments in this lovely location.

Room Tip: Apartments/rooms nearer the back/side of the complex(Place On The Bay) but still sea facing quieter
