“Nice location- NOT 5 Star”
Reviewed January 6, 2011

We spent five nights at the Bay Hotel in November. We had a premier sea facing room which was quite basic-especially given the price point. It’s a nice enough hotel, but not a five star property by any means. You are paying strictly for the location which is as good as you’ll find in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Having seen the five star rating, I expected service and amenities similar to that of a Four Seasons or Shangri-La, but was disappointed. The elevators did work while we were there, there is no concierge, new toiletries were not provided until the fifth day and only upon request.
The breakfasts were tasty but not elaborate with the wait staff smiling but somewhat challenged, regardless of the number of guests in the dining room . Only twice were we addressed upon entering the lobby during our five night stay. The service was similar to that of a three or possibly four star hotel.
Unfortunately the hotel seems to play off its location and wealth of the surrounding community more so than striving to provide top notch amenities and service .

My wife and I commenced our honeymoon here in September and could scarcely have chosen better. Location superb, right on the waterfront and within very easy access of a number of excellent bars for sundowners. Breakfast was excellent and one of the best we received in South Africa (Eggs Benedict & Full Monty).

A delay in room availability on arrival was one minor quibble but one which was not dwelt upon. The room was perfectly adequate but no better than that, however this was made up for by the spectacular view of the Twelve Apostles we enjoyed from the rear (see photo). Ipod dock did not function correctly and was not replaced when reported to reception. Wifi system worked reasonably well but rather frustratingly required to log in on each occasion.

A transfer service to the car rental hq in central Cape Town was availed of and very competitively priced.

With the greatest of respect to other reviewers, if you leave cash/ wallets available in your room in South Africa or any other country for that matter and fail to use the safes provided you have no right to quibble.

Located a convenient stroll from the excellent Codfather Restaurant and Hussar Steakhouse both of which we would highly recommend. The Bus Tour to Cape Town, also located extremely conveniently, just across the road is an absolute must.

All in all, would have no hesitation in returning.

Started our honeymoon here in October and were not disappointed. We thought the hotel was brilliant. We had a sea view room - spacious with sitting area and balcony overlooking the swimming pools and beach. Spotlessly clean and really nice modern decor. The staff were really welcoming and friendly and the location could not have been better. We hired a car but you can easily take a taxi into Cape Town centre and the red tour bus stops in front of the hotel every 15 minutes. We loved Camps Bay and were really pleased we were staying here rather than Cape Town city centre itself. We didn't eat dinner in the hotel as there are some fantastic restaurants within a 5 minute walk. (Our favourite being the Codfather - definately worth a visit too!).
Would not hesitate recommending The Bay, we loved it.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights at the end of travelling and staying in five other hotels. We couldn't have been more disappointed. For a five star hotel, the service was awful. We felt like all they seemed to want was money - buffet breakfast included in the price, so why ask you to sign every morning - would it be to obtain a gratuity by any chance!! Just felt wrong.
In addition, I had cash stolen from the room, from a purse (pounds sterling), so I only found out at the airport after boarding our plane.
Staff were unengaging. Just spoilt our holiday a little and as we had five hotels to compare it to, it doesn't deserve 5 stars in our opinion.

Check in, room size and quality, service, decor, the 3 outdoor heated pools are all OK - as expected for a 5 star hotel. The staff were very genuine and friendly, helpful and went out of their way to assist. However, a few times, we were pressed into tipping even when I consider poor service was given.
The location is fantastic - in the middle of Camps Bay, right by the beach. We felt safe even at night here. The beach touts are not too pushy, although it was always busy and could get noisy. There are lots of good quality, expensive bars along the beach road. Their focus is very much on fine dining as the sun sinks over the sea and turns the mountain red.
Note, the sea is VERY cold, even in summer and it can be very windy.
The breakfast was very good - a lot of effort was made and there was good variety. However, you don't get some of the personal touches that you get in smaller places. And the less said about the coffee, the better. Evening dining is of reasonable quality, but slightly more expensive than places 20 metres down the road.
The red tourist bus (120 Rand pp) stops outside, but you have to do a whole loop to get to the cable car - so take a taxi or go round for a couple of hours the long way.
We paid less than the rack rate for the room, so check the booking websites.

My wife and I, travelled to Cape Town to celebrate my birthday. After checking Trip Advisor, I eventually decided to choose this hotel. I was not disappointed.

The location of the hotel is just superb! The beach is literally 40 metres away. The staff are friendly and attentive. Our room a 'mountain view' one, was excellent. Only the strange green, plastic looking, roofing sheets, spoilt the view. Breakfast is excellent, we didn't try any evening meals, in the hotel, as the choice of food on the menu, wasn't to our taste.
There are many great eateries no more than 100 metres away, so we didn't care. There is free wifi access in the lobby area for all guests. The hotel has a main pool and some Infinity pools too, plus a small but well equipped gym.

There are open top 'tourist buses' that go past the front of the hotel every 15 minutes or so. These drive 'slowly' to all the nearby attractions. They cost 110 Rand per person, per day and you can jump on and off when you like. There are lots of local taxis 40m to the left, of the front of the hotel too. You can barter with them to get a lower price.

Also just parked next to the taxis are 'reggae' minibuses. These are a really cheap way to get to Cape town from Camps bay. We paid a minuscule 12 rand for the two of us, to go to the V&A Waterfront from the hotel, just tell the driver to "stop" when you are close by, to get off. A taxi to V&A would have cost 60 - 90 rand one way, dependent on your bartering skills. You can insist they use the meter, if you want to.

The view from the top of 'Table Mountain,' is absolutely fabulous!! A must see!!
Robben Island tours can be "sold out" 2-3 days in advance. So book/buy your tickets early.

My wife and I, have been blessed, to have had the pleasure, of staying in many nice hotels worldwide. This was one of the best!!

Bravo, "The Bay Hotel."

We were sad to leave this hotel and beautiful Cape Town.
