Perhaps we had been spoilt elsewhere in South Africa by the great guesthouses and locations we had stayed in. Or perhaps having "splashed out" on the last night's stay of our holiday, our expectations were a little high. But for some reason Atlantic Gold did not quite hit the spot for us.
The views were incredible, lying on the comfy loungers sipping our Franschhoek purchased champagne whilst the sun set over Camps Bay will be a memory I will have etched in my memory for a long time. And we liked the fact that no matter where we were in the room, we could see the views. To see the view down the coast to Chapman's Peak Drive, the view across the bay, the views behind us to Table Mountain, Signal Hill and the Twelve Apostles was simply breathtaking.
So the Atlantic Gold is in an amazing location. The rooms were very luxuriously designed and decorated. However, we felt it lacked a little personality (more hotel room than guesthouse) and some of it was a little "style over substance". For example, the wardrobes door slid back to expose a small sink and food preparation area, or your clothes, but they were on hard metal runners and so when I stepped forward to get things out the wardrobe or wash things in the sink I kept stubbing my toes or embedding metal strips into the soles of my feet. The bath has cushions at both ends, but wasn't really comfortably big enough for two. And the lighting was more mood lighting than practical.
As Atlantic Gold is so far away from the main strip of Camps Bay, you do need to drive or get a taxi for breakfast or dinner. The small self catering area would be fine for a light meal preparation (as they say) but it's a shame that no breakfast is available seeing as you are paying a lot and are so far away from the main strip. Even if they did not want to provide a separate area for breakfast, considering the price you are paying it would be nice if there was a small continental breakfast or something provided. Also having done some self catering elsewhere on our trip, this was the only place we stayed in South Africa where utensils are provided and there were no champage glassses. Now, normally this is not something I would complain about - but we had them when we stayed in a wood hut in one of the National Parks, when we stayed in a treehouse in the mountains, when we stayed in tent in the bush, but not when we stayed in a swish appartment overlooking Camps Bay!
We met Alice when we checked out, and she was lovely, welcoming and so friendly as she had been throughout the booking process. She was such a lovely hostess we thought it was a shame we had not met her earlier. Not that there was anything wrong with anyone else we had met, but Alice seemed so nice and welcoming we felt our experience would have been different if we had met her when we checked in rather than when we checked out!
All in all, considering the price we were paying, we didn't feel that our experience lived up to our expectations and that we could have got better value for money elsewhere. Which is a shame because it looked so nice! Apart from providing a bit of breakfast there is not really a lot that could be changed about Atlantic Gold and other reviewers are raving about it, so perhaps it was just not quite to our taste?
