Who doesn't dream about The beautiful Med when winter hits a crescendo in SA! All the talk about the boat show in Cannes, news of heatwaves in the Lowveld and a recent gruelling work season is enough to make anybody yearn for a "real" break somewhere blue and beautiful. With real I mean uber-comfy accommodation, great amenities, uninterrupted view(s), service on-tap and, of course, fantastic bathrooms
So as not to blow time and budget on international flights we set about finding a local venue that would offer all of the above. Not an easy task, considering we were a group of entrepreneurs (eight to be exact) that required privacy and space in which to re-energise and brainstorm a new venture. We were burnt out. The last thing we wanted was to be cooped up in small hotel rooms and an environment in which we had to get out of our robes and PJ's before noon. When travelling together, it is preferrable (and a lot more fun) to be housed in a single dwelling with communal pool and entertainment area(s)
Finding the Blue Views Portfolio was a real koo as we were presented with no less than six options to accommodate our little group of high-maintenance, aesthetically minded people. We selected the Blue Views House, due to it's super-close proximity to the ocean and oversized kitchen and dining room table. Yes, we needed a rest, but with facilities such as these it was inevitable that we'd end up entertaining and invite close friends to join us. Dinners, a rugby braai and a few game evenings ensued despite chilly winter conditions. Nothing like weathering a storm from within the confines of luxury. By the same token, simply staring at the Bakoven waves from our bedrooms meant we were actually doing something. A very relaxed activity, I might add
Blue Views require five-day-minimum bookings. Their current winter special is such a steal that we checked out of Cape Town society for eight glorious days of R&R! Our seven bedroom contemporary Villa, including daily servicing, evening security patrol, entertaining facilities and self-catering amenities cost us less than the price of a good dinner (under R 700p/p per night). Where in Europe or the Americas can one achieve this for truly 5-star accomodation... Still, the best part remains the spaciousness (huge bedrooms), fresh interiors and boutique hotel-style bathrooms. We all dream of actually living in Villas such as these
Despite the "Miami-style" strip of restaurants on our doorstep in nearby Camps Bay, we elected to walk to the little Bakery on the edge of the Bakoven Cliffs in the mornings for Espressos and fresh Croissants, pretending again to be in La Croisette. Our host and go-to-girl (the lovely Lynn) arranged power-bikes for us for our morning cycles as well as in-house spa treatments. We conducted a stock-and-shop at the start of our stay and quite frankly only left the Villa to dine at the nearby Twelve Apostels Hotel and go for runs along the adjacent Promenade before sunset. Weather permitting of course...
A real break is incomplete when one is faced with domestic duties. The Cleaning Staff were invisible fairies and thanks to Lynn's impeccable schedules we woke up to a cleared kitchen every morning and our rooms were fluffed whilst we lounged around brunch activity.
Finally, a plus-point with regards the layout of the Villa: The TV nook, family lounge, dining area and poolside sections allowed for ample privacy and diverse individual activities (eg. reading vsTV viewing). No cabin fever here, thanks to considerate (and timeless) design. In fact, on the last day of our stay we were shown various of the other penthouses, apartments, Villas and Cottage in the BV Portfolio. It is evident that view, spacious design, comfort, prompt service and understated luxury remain key elements within the offering. Not unlike "Big Five Spotting" at our top game reserves.
On a final note - it is not often that product supercedes expectation. Interestingly, the "Blue Views" image on the Group Letterhead truly exists from each and every one of the units. One owns a little bit of that Azure Blue for the duration of one's stay (the colour and mood of the ocean changes every day, though) and with such brilliant rates it is difficult not to plan a next pseudo-European breakaway to beautiful Bakoven. Thank you, BV team
