“Mid-Winter Breakaway into the Blue”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

Who doesn't dream about The beautiful Med when winter hits a crescendo in SA! All the talk about the boat show in Cannes, news of heatwaves in the Lowveld and a recent gruelling work season is enough to make anybody yearn for a "real" break somewhere blue and beautiful. With real I mean uber-comfy accommodation, great amenities, uninterrupted view(s), service on-tap and, of course, fantastic bathrooms

So as not to blow time and budget on international flights we set about finding a local venue that would offer all of the above. Not an easy task, considering we were a group of entrepreneurs (eight to be exact) that required privacy and space in which to re-energise and brainstorm a new venture. We were burnt out. The last thing we wanted was to be cooped up in small hotel rooms and an environment in which we had to get out of our robes and PJ's before noon. When travelling together, it is preferrable (and a lot more fun) to be housed in a single dwelling with communal pool and entertainment area(s)

Finding the Blue Views Portfolio was a real koo as we were presented with no less than six options to accommodate our little group of high-maintenance, aesthetically minded people. We selected the Blue Views House, due to it's super-close proximity to the ocean and oversized kitchen and dining room table. Yes, we needed a rest, but with facilities such as these it was inevitable that we'd end up entertaining and invite close friends to join us. Dinners, a rugby braai and a few game evenings ensued despite chilly winter conditions. Nothing like weathering a storm from within the confines of luxury. By the same token, simply staring at the Bakoven waves from our bedrooms meant we were actually doing something. A very relaxed activity, I might add

Blue Views require five-day-minimum bookings. Their current winter special is such a steal that we checked out of Cape Town society for eight glorious days of R&R! Our seven bedroom contemporary Villa, including daily servicing, evening security patrol, entertaining facilities and self-catering amenities cost us less than the price of a good dinner (under R 700p/p per night). Where in Europe or the Americas can one achieve this for truly 5-star accomodation... Still, the best part remains the spaciousness (huge bedrooms), fresh interiors and boutique hotel-style bathrooms. We all dream of actually living in Villas such as these

Despite the "Miami-style" strip of restaurants on our doorstep in nearby Camps Bay, we elected to walk to the little Bakery on the edge of the Bakoven Cliffs in the mornings for Espressos and fresh Croissants, pretending again to be in La Croisette. Our host and go-to-girl (the lovely Lynn) arranged power-bikes for us for our morning cycles as well as in-house spa treatments. We conducted a stock-and-shop at the start of our stay and quite frankly only left the Villa to dine at the nearby Twelve Apostels Hotel and go for runs along the adjacent Promenade before sunset. Weather permitting of course...

A real break is incomplete when one is faced with domestic duties. The Cleaning Staff were invisible fairies and thanks to Lynn's impeccable schedules we woke up to a cleared kitchen every morning and our rooms were fluffed whilst we lounged around brunch activity.

Finally, a plus-point with regards the layout of the Villa: The TV nook, family lounge, dining area and poolside sections allowed for ample privacy and diverse individual activities (eg. reading vsTV viewing). No cabin fever here, thanks to considerate (and timeless) design. In fact, on the last day of our stay we were shown various of the other penthouses, apartments, Villas and Cottage in the BV Portfolio. It is evident that view, spacious design, comfort, prompt service and understated luxury remain key elements within the offering. Not unlike "Big Five Spotting" at our top game reserves.

On a final note - it is not often that product supercedes expectation. Interestingly, the "Blue Views" image on the Group Letterhead truly exists from each and every one of the units. One owns a little bit of that Azure Blue for the duration of one's stay (the colour and mood of the ocean changes every day, though) and with such brilliant rates it is difficult not to plan a next pseudo-European breakaway to beautiful Bakoven. Thank you, BV team

Room Tip: The BV House has two Main-en-suites, so no need to fight over the best room in the house! The top fl...

We used an outfit called Cape Town Holiday Villas which, given the name, is difficult to identify separately on this site, for a 1 week stay in March/April this year. We originally booked another Blue Views property through them as it suited our needs - away from the crowds, with a garden and swimming pool etc. We were advised a few days before we set off that this (original) villa had now become unavailable as it required maintenance and that we had been "upgraded" to 1A Victoria Road (which goes under various names in the marketing by the different agents).

Given the booking was over Easter, we had little choice but to accept the "upgrade" and trust the enthusiasm with which this news was delivered.

It was not an upgrade. The text below is a letter sent to the agents on 9 April 2013 and, despite numerous follow-ups and endless promises from them that it was receiving attention, we have heard nothing.

"We remain unhappy that we were moved from the original house. The attraction of the house was that it looked (from the website anyway) "lived-in" and had character. It was also away from the traffic, had a small garden and was self-contained - ie it was not part of a complex. It had fewer rooms, but that was not an issue for us.

The replacement villa was noisy, was essentially an apartment with no usable or private outside space - looking straight onto the road and the road onto us. The only "upgrade" was the fact that it had 7 bedrooms which, as I said, was of no importance to us.

The furnishings were sparse, it had absolutely no character - just loads of white space - white tiles, white walls, white furnishings, even the attempted artwork was light. It had minimal furnishings - it positively echoed such that it was impossible to play any music without it reverberating everywhere and rendering it incomprehensible.

But, the worst part was that it was filthy - yes, grimy. There was mould in the showers, the floors had not been properly cleaned (there was wax on the floor under the dining table that appeared to have been there for ages), the grout was grubby, there was chewing gum stuck to the underside of the dining table (I kid you not!), there was litter on the staircase outside the apartment - it was just totally unacceptable. We were out quite a bit so did not see much of the cleaning team. They seemed to be in a hurry - left (cleaned) dishes in the dishwasher, had not swept the floors properly and we had that bizarre situation where half the linen disappeared.

You are aware of the issue with the dishwasher and the blocked drain - at the pricing level (their rack or what we paid), this is not what you expect. Having spent a week in top notch private game lodges, this was a big disappointment for us, but more importantly, for our fellow travellers for whom this was a first time trip.

I understand that you are an agent and do not own or operate the villas - but you do have a duty of care to your customer and should ensure that the accommodation is fit for purpose. This was no upgrade - it really was, for us, a serious downgrade.

I await your (or your owner/manager's) thoughts on this."

It really was a dismal place and I strongly discourage any but the largest of groups who plan on spending as little time as possible in the residence. There must be more proactive and service oriented agents in Cape Town too.

Dear SCSUk
Blue Views is a privately owned and managed group of properties and we have been in business for 15 years. We take great pride in our reputation and the outstanding reviews we have received from previous guests, as can be seen below.
I feel it is important that the sequence of events on how you ended up staying at Blue Views be explained.
You had originally booked a smaller house via a local agent for the Easter weekend, which was not a Blue Views property.
Shortly before Easter, the property you had booked became unavailable and at the last minute the agent contacted us to see if we had any availability.
Blue Views had a last minute cancellation on a 7 bedroom property (one of our most popular properties) and we were able to offer this to the agent as a replacement at short notice, but it is important to note that we were completely unaware of your requirements.
It is correct that the property is situated on Victoria Road and does not have a garden, but we do not market this property as anything other than a 7 bedroom apartment with outstanding views within walking distance to Camps Bay and the local beach.
Unfortunately our more suitable properties were not available over Easter and therefore Blue Views cannot be held responsible for the fact that you did not receive the original property which you were anticipating staying in.
We do have properties that are smaller and with gardens, in a quite area, but understandably these properties were unavailable over Easter.
I appreciate the furnishings were not to your taste, but this property is intentionally decorated in the minimalistic style in neutral colours.
I am aware that the dishwasher broke during your stay, and was replaced within 36 hours, which would have been sooner, had it not been for Easter weekend.
We were made aware of your unhappiness some time after your stay, and did discuss and offer the agent some financial compensation due to the inconvenience of the dishwasher and a blocked drain, but it appears that this compensation was not actioned.
In conclusion it is indeed most unfortunate that you did not enjoy your stay in Cape Town over Easter, and should you one day return, perhaps we can offer you a property that is more to your liking.
General Manager,

The Penthouse II is ideally located, beautifully furnished, with every luxury one needs. Then there is the view. Mountain, Sea or Sky, take your pick! Looking out over the sea, from an enormous deck with infinity pool, we saw whales and dolphins and simply stunning sunsets, then retreated into the huge living area, with lovely furnishings and every modern appliance you can think of. I really cannot recommend Blue Views enough, the lovely ladies were very thorough and helpful, ensuring our stay was as pleasurable as possible. If you are in Cape Town and the Penthouse is available, stay here. It's that simple ;-)

Room Tip: 5 Huge rooms - each one as luxurious as the next. My favourite is the one on the living area level...

When you rent a luxury villa, you are not always convinced it’s going to be as 'luxury' as the photos. Well Blue Views exceeded our expectations. We were lucky enough to stay in 2 of the villas and I have to say the finishes at the properties really are the of the highest quality. On arrival the property was exceptionally clean -maybe is it just me that notices this:), beautiful fluffy white towels, linen and of course the views are breathtaking. There was also plenty of space, as we were 2 families with children, we never felt like we were on top of each other and the outdoor facilities are amazing. Champagne while watching the sunset from your terrace really is tough. The next morning, a cleaning service came in and were so 'invisible' we hardly even noticed they were there, except everything was clean and fresh, like the day before. I mention this because sometimes this can be quite an intrusive part of staying in a villa, they however do it very discreetly . All in all a rock star experience, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can't wait to return for a week down the road but away from it all....

We rented Penthouse 2 for our stay in Cape Town. The staff were friendly, efficient and readily available to help. The apartment is spacious and clean. The style is very contemporary, something I enjoy but may not be everyone's cup of tea.

The sunsets from the lounge were stunning. All amenities in the apartment were there and well care for. Security system is good and the fact that there is a parking garage is good as I always feel uncomfortable to park on the street.

I'm currently loving my stay at my all time favourite accomodation in Cape Town, Penthouse 1. Looking out at the stormy ocean from the tranquility of my toasty living room with it's gas fireplace in the middle of a cold CPT winter is fantastic, quite a different experience from being here in summer and just as pleasant. Despite the howling wind and driving rain the place feels very solid and secure with no hint of rattle from the floor to ceiling windows. The view is as breathtaking in winter as it is in summer I can assure you.

I was very pleased on my arrival to see that the kitchen has been nicely renovated and so have the floors been redone. The internet speed is also substantially faster than previously and something I really appreciate as fast internet is still relatively hard to find in South Africa. The finishes are of a good standard and that's why I can comfortably sit here and enjoy this violent winter storm and watch the rain lashing all around me.

Unfortunately I only have 2 days left of my trip, the time spent enjoying Penthouse 1 seems to go by far too fast. I always look forward to returning and have to hope that its not booked out for my next visit.
