Just recently took this amazingly scenic drive. Unfortunately, it was raining quite a bit but it made for some amazing views. There are many pull-offs that provide excellent vantage points for viewing and photography especially of Hout Bay. Put this on your to do list in Cape Town!

We did this drive south to north after driving around Cape Point (33 ZAR toll at north end of drive). How scenic! Have your camera ready. There is one area that goes under a manmade and a natural rock overhang which was really an engineering feat. Unfortunately, we weren't aware of it in advance, and by the time I got my camera ready, we were through it. We did not see a place to pull over which would have captured it well after the fact. Towards the end of the drive there were quite a few pullouts and picnic tables--and they were mostly empty on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. They are building a new toll booth on the north end, so there are some traffic back-ups in both directions if you are unlucky. We skated through with no lines. I would like to do that drive again.

A winding road around the cliff edge. Absolutely breathtaking views. If possible, go around sunset as that will heighten the experience (though be warnded that sun glare can be awkward if driving toward Cape Town around sunset). This is one of those experiences that you would be stupid to miss if you've travelled to Cape Town. Be warned that there is a toll on the road though.

This is definitely one of Cape Town's most scenic drives, also very popular with cyclist as its part of the Argus Cycle Tour. However the operator has made the operations very complicated. Briefly if you are entering from Hout Bay side(city side) and dont intend driving all the way through to Noordhoek Beach you do not have to pay !!!

You will have access to all the hiking trails and picnic spots along Chapmans Peak but need to turn around at the control point before the top lookout spot. Many Capetonians dont know this and therefore dont frequent this beautiful drive. It is a fantastic place to come have a picnic and also watch the sunset. And this is where the second catch comes in. The free pass is only valid during sunlight!!! The operator obviously knows people want to come and watch sunset and have therefore come up with this rule to charge you you if you come back down after sunset.

Third rip off is if you come through the toll gate at the Hout Bay side and by mistake pay to go to the picnic spots, you will have to pay again when you come back down to Hout Bay. Their argument is that the R33,00 that you paid when you went through is for one direction only to Noordhoek. If you want to come back down on Hout Bay side you need to pay again. Absolutely crazy and short sighted by the operator.

So all in all a fantastic Cape Town attraction but beware of greedy operator.
