“Bainskloof Pass and Falls delight”
Review of Bainskloof Pass

Reviewed May 1, 2013

A short drive from Cape Town is the small town of Wellington, leading onto a stunning drive through Bainskloof Pass along a meandering river. 16km along the pass leads you to Tweede Tol campsite where you can overnight alongside a river and take a short walk to Bainskloof Falls - for an icy swim. Take a group of friends as the campsite can get rather festive, or ask for site number 1 if you want something a little more private and romantic for a couple - its right next to the river and we spent the afternoon sitting on the rocks, watching the sun go down then the moon rise! May was perfect surprise good weather, especially around full moon time. PS don't miss a trip to Diemersfontein wine farm on Piet Retief St in Wellington - its top SA wine and the tasting is free and open until 4pm on a Saturday.

This pass is an engineering feat considering it was built in the 1850's. You need to stop at every viewpoint along the way and when you get to the top there are some interesting houses and buildings as well as a plaque commemorating the engineer. A favourite spot for birdwatchers looking for endemic species but also one of the most beautiful passes in South Africa all on tar road.

Hi,
After a blessed weekend @ Dieu Donne Guest Farm, Franschhoek, we drove thru the pass with wonderful views, misty mountains. What a great view of the valley & challenging scenic drive.
Taking care on the narrow roads with passing traffic we had a lovely drive.
