Bakubung Bush Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 16, 2013

I stayed one night during the Easter period. Very convenient location, close to Johannesburg, only 2 hours of drive, the hotel is at the entrance of the park and you can save lots of time to come from and return to J'berg. The hotel is in the national partk and a beautiful setting. I stayed in lodge and a room was beautiful. The breakfast was plemty and nice, and game drives (I took evening and morning, twice) were OK but they put so many people in one car and moved people who came early to save good seats for someone who came really late but still wanted to seat a goup of four together. Rangers want to move kids in front seats next to the driver and parents refused..... Unfortunately we could not see many animals, just unlucky.

The room does not have a fridge so I needed to ask for ice to cool my bottles of water. Yes, the bath room door including toilet is glass, transparent so I could not have stayed with my parents or friends... Pool was nice but there are full of uncontolable kids, jumping into the water 100 times....

Finally I see problems in the front desk staff. They are not customer oriented and very arrogant and confrontational. They charge your card for ZAR500 deposits at the time of check-in for extra food and drink and I was not sure they could return if I did not use them all. They misinformed the check-out time and I was very sad to know that they would charge 50% if we stayed till 12:00 and thereafter 100% even though there are any people will check-in in your room. My pick-up arrangement was 2PM and it was very hard to kill time without having a place to stay...

Room Tip: Second floor of the lodge.

Bakubung is an up market resort where you can experience the wild. The self catering bungalows are serviced every day and the staff are very friendly. You can either eat at the restaurant or prepare your own meal at the bungalow. The lodge is situated in the Pilansberg game reserve and it is a 5 minute drive to the game reserve. From the bungalow/hotel you can see the elephant, kudu, waterbuck etc drink at the dam situated 50 meter from the restaurant. Visiting Bakubung is a very relaxed well worth experience.

Bakubung, even being a big lodge with 70 odd rooms still offers good service, great food and being in Pilanesberg very good game drives. The rooms have recently been refurbished so very well appointed and comfortable. Bakubung is a great lodge in a big five reserve to stay at if you have limited time.

Room Tip: If you can stay over on a Wednesday or Saturday night the lodge offers a barbeque out on the reserve...

Bakubung Bush Lodge is situated just on the edge of the Pilanesburg Game Reserve. This provides for wonderful relaxing atmosphere after a long drive in the game park. Bakubung offers chalet's surrounding a water hole where elephants and hippo's like to play around.
Bakubung alo offers conferencing facilities. Lunch in offered as a buffet. the actual service at the conference venue was not great. Not enough place for attendees to get tea/coffee resulting in a long que and exceeding tea break. I would recommend this place to someone who would like to get out of the city to visit the game park and whou do not want to stay in Sun City.

I couldn't recommend this place enough as somewhere for a seriously relaxing break. We had the most excellent bush braai last night. The food was authentic, plenty full and very very tasty. It was in the most amazing setting of thatched boma's with huge log fires surrounding it.
This morning we were treated to some of the best that Africa has to offer. It's wild life! The game drive was taken by a very knowledgeable guide who managed to find us 4 of the big 5, as well as loads of other animals. After the game drive we had a most delicious breakfast.
We have one major criticism, of an otherwise beautifully appointed room. The loo has a glass door....!

Just got back from South Africa, and my second stay at Bakubung Lodge. Having read some reviews concerning their wildlife tours and meals I would like to report that the morning game rides are from 6-9AM, meal service runs till 9:30 Monday through Friday, and 10:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Evening game drives run from 4-7PM, meals are served until 9PM. So, there is no real problem taking any game drive then missing meals.

Check-in for me was smooth and easy. Sure, there was only 1 other person checking in at that time. Getting to my room was easy. You need to let the front desk know every night what time you wish to have dinner. You will be given a choice of inside, or outside on the patio. Front desk people were always nice and friendly.

There are 7 shuttle trips to and from Sun City a day, over and back cost 110 Rand. Shuttle to Sun City to catch the airport shuttle back to JNB, 50 Rand.

My meals were right nice. Seemed to be several choices, cheese and bread bar, fruit each meal, plenty of desserts.

Bar area was right nice. Bathrooms are handy outside of the restaurant/bar area.

Free internet, internet room is open 24/7.

Room was very very comfortable. 22 TV channels, not that I was there for TV.

I did manage to get a massage, a 90 minute massage, deep tissue, cost 600 Rand. Sylvia did a very nice job. Pool area was clean and comfortable with plenty of seating.

Folks, if you are wanting to stay near Sun City, but away from the noise that is there, I seriously suggest Bunkubung Lodge. I paid US 673.00 for a 3 night stay. This included my room, breakfast and supper, and 3 game drives.

Bakubung Bush Lodge is in Pilanesberg National Park, yet one does not have to enter the park to get there and yet again sees the wildlife roaming and enjoying the waterhole right from the lounge area. It is only a short drive to the entrance gate of the park and also only a short drive to Sun City. Its central location is definitely an advantage, especially when planning for a conference, meetings or special occasions like weddings.
The accommodation is more hotel like, but still great for in the bush. The rooms offer great views over the park and the wildlife and are decorated nicely safari like. It is a big lodge, but still feels pleasant. The restaurant opens with a terrace onto the park and the pool area is spacious.
