“Burgled while asleep in Unit 91!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2014

In the early hours ( 3am) of 27 January 2014 we were burgled while asleep in unit 91. We had our 5 month old baby with us. Our possessions were taken from right next to our bed whilst we slept! Thank God our lives were spared and that our baby wasn't snatched.

Immediately upon realising the situation we called hotel security. Management of the situation was poor. Definitely no customer service when it came to a serious matter of being invaded in our hotel room.

We maintain that the hotel is liable for the burglary occurring. The hotel provided no burglar proofing on the downstairs windows, which we had closed for air conditioning. The thief gained access at the window located next to the front door of the unit. In addition the door can be opened from the inside, automatically locks on the outside. possible to just put hand in and open the door!

The hotel and their insurance company( Marsh Africa) of course do not admit liability for the trauma and loss we have suffered. Simply shrug their shoulders.

Be VERY wary staying at Kwa Maritane. You are at risk staying there. We will certainly not be back!
Back safe in Australia.

Theft at Kwa Maritane Game Lodge
It is with regret that we need to acknowledge that we have had a few incidents of thefts in our area – the current unemployment rate in the region is very high and regretfully luxurious properties such as our have not been immune to thefts and attempted thefts.
With the increase of modern technologies, our guess and owners are also carrying more valuable items in their possession (latest cell phones, ipad sand laptops) and thus we have increased our advertising material in our rooms, asking our guests and visitors to please lock away their valuables in the safes provided in the rooms when not in use – temptation will always be a factor.
Kwa Maritane is situated in a Game reserve and the outside boundary is electrified to keep our animals from breaking out of the reserve. The property itself is then also secured with another electric fence to keep animals off the property and keep our guests and owners safe from any harm caused by animals – we have the big 5 roaming freely in the reserve and thus protection is needed for our guests. With all this security in place to control our wildlife , we however do still experience very limited attempts by thief’s wanting to enrich themselves – our own security are also patrolling the Lodge on a regular basis – thus all efforts are made to secure our guest and visitors.
We have been in contact with the Hicks family on numerous times , offered counselling to the family at our cost as we recognized the trauma the family have go through must have been serious and we are still awaiting a response from the family.

We spent 4 days here, and it was amazing, the staff are incredibly friendly, the food was fantastic, they offer day and night drives, we went for the night drive with dinner included in a Boma in the bush which was an incredible experience, the lodging is 5 stars, and the game viewing is worth every moment.

After reading one of the other reviews about thefts, I decided I should post my experience too. Two parties in our group were also robbed and one person had the unfortunate situation of walking in on the thief. No one was harmed, but management and staff was less than helpful or understanding.

That said, the other experiences here were fairly positive. The guides for our game drives and game walk were excellent and really enjoyed them. The meals weren't bad but a little uninspiring, as mentioned by a couple other reviews. The views are fantastic though; there aren't many things cooler than seeing safari animals from your patio, at dinner, and other places on the grounds. Unfortunately, those views are a lot less enjoyable if you don't feel safe.

We rented a week in the timeshare section of Kwa Maritane. What an excellent place to stay!!. We could go into Pilanesburg Game Reserve daily, play golf at Sun City, play tennis at the lodge or just enjoy the animals at the waterhole right in front of our unit. The unit itself is luxuriously equipped and the service at the unit is of excellent standard. We will for sure go back to Kwa Maritane where luxury, the bush and good service come together

I stayed here for 2 days on business with 27 of my colleagues. The rooms are quite nice, if the decor is somewhat dated, and the bathroom and the room in General we're clean. My room was on the ground floor in the block furthest from the main building, and it had a nice patio where you can sit and watch the zebras stroll past in the park. The view from the dining room terrace is beautiful.

The food was uninspiring; a sort of international cuisine. The salad bar was the best part. Breakfast was better than the other meals.

Unlike some other reviewers, I thought the service was OK, in the South African style, and I had no complaints.

It is such beautiful spot that I would consider coming back here on holiday.

Located in the center of the Pilanesberg National Park. Decent hotel with a decent staff. Nothing exceptional, the kitchen staff was very friendly. The safari was decent and the guide was very friendly. When we were staying there, we saw a lot of clients taking the Safari of other Hotel "The Palace" which was a luxurious safari and i asked the guest and they said that there is not much of a price difference. I would recommend people staying there to call safari from The Palace. It is a pricey Hotel for the quality of rooms, service and safari!! Our experience was good though.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms which face the national park!!

We were there for only 2 nights and thought the hotel was ok, but expensive for what it offered. The rooms are comfortable, and decorated in a very typical manner but nothing special. Our air conditioner was very noisy, and the bathroom door did not close. Service was not excptional, we encountered many people who seemed unhappy and some were not very polite (especially at the reception and waiters at the restaurant). The food was ok, nothing special, and the people at the restaurant were not very helpful. We wanted a table in a balcony where people had already left and the waiters said we couldn´t sit there because it was dirty and appearently they couldn´t clean it. We could only chose a table that had not been used, which limited our choice very much. Wine only arrived when we were nearly finished with our meal. We loved the Pilansberg National Park. This hotel is inside the park, and there is a gate to the park at the entrance of the hotel, which makes it very easy for guests to go into the park on their own. We had a great time both at the safari offered by the hotel (the guide was great and explained several curiosities about the animals) as well as on our own. We were there on the weekend and it was not full. We saw several animals, such as giraffes, zebras, rhinos, elefants and lions. ONe thing we did which we loved was an elephant back safari. It is not offered by the hotel, it is in nearby Sun City, but they pick you up at the hotel. It was an unique and worthwhile experience.
