“Best Game lodge experience”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We had the opportunity to spend a whole week in Pilanesberg private lodge just before Christmas. The early morning drives are splendid, but require also an early rise. Mealtimes seem odd but are adjusted to accommodate the game drives; all in all you spend around 6 hours a day spotting game. Meals are innovative and offer a choice between local South African cuisine and international dishes. Wine selection is good but mainly from one house. The hospitality is excellent, warm and informal. The small scale of the lodge ensures personal attention to make you feel at home. If you do have a chance take a walking safari tour with a ranger.

We stayed in Pilanesberg Private Lodge in January for three nights and it was a wonderful experience from our arrival to departure. We were the only couple there for the first night which was such a treat but as more guests arrived it was fun exchanging stories and meeting others. The highlight of our stay was undoubtably the game drives with Ella - she was so knowledgable, kind, funny and as a true testament to her, we saw all of the big five plus the elusive wild dogs, black Rhino and many, many more. She has an amazing eye to see animals off in the distance and she knows the park like the back of her hand. I enjoyed it so much I could have stayed a month. The lodge was clean, comfortable and the outdoor shower was a nice change. The food was very good and the staff were so amenable and efficient. (The only minor flaw to an otherwise perfect stay, was the charge for all the bottle water consumed). I can't wait to go back again and hopefully Ella will still be there. Thanks so much for such a great trip and lifelong memories.

We had a wonderful 2 days at the lodge with our 3 children (11, 8 and 4). We lucked out and were the only guests there during our stay so we had the whole place to ourselves.
The staff were lovely and our guide Elsabe was fabulous. Extremely knowledgeable and very friendly.
The rooms are lovely (we had the family suite) nicely decorated with top of the line bedding.
The food was very simple, but with 3 kids in tow we didn't want anything fancy.
This safari is great value for money.

What a FANTASTIC Experience ... From arriving at the Lodge, up to the departure ... you WILL receive personal attention.

2 Daily Game drives, with the BEST guide we have ever been with - Elsabe. Her knowledge of the Animals, Birds, Trees is amazing. The passion that she does it with, and then her patience with tourists ... She goes out of her way to find the animals for you.

The Breakfasts, Light Lunches and Dinners ... Jacomè is a Chef that will spoil you with her Traditional meals ... and she makes what you ask. No Buffet, individual attention is what makes this experience so wonderful! She will even bake you a Cake on your Birthday!

Thank you guys for making this weekend a memorable experience.

We were three couples, stayed there from 16th through the 18th Aug 2012. A wonderful - middle of nowhere - jungle lodge and with some tremendous and warm staff I've ever come across. With our vegetarian fooding requirements, they did very well to cook us some yummy veg curries and pastas. All meals were delicious and our Game driver, Ella was wonderful too.

We had a lovely stay and enjoyed every moment of our stay in this property.

We stayed here for a few days in April. Overall, we had an amazing time!

The good:
- Lots of choice for breakfast, and they provided meal choices for vegetarians :)
- Beautiful, clean lodges, comfortable beds, beautiful showers (indoor and out) and bathtub
- Modern sinks and separate toilet area
- Main lodge was inviting and comfortable
- Fabulous game driver, Ela - very informative, friendly, and fun
- Hot water bottles and blankets provided for cold early morning game drives
- Hot chocolate/coffee provided on game drives, snacks too
- Drinks provided upon arrival
- Nice sun-deck on top of the eating area where you can sun yourself and relax
- Very serene :)

Tips:
- Bring your own binoculars (I brought a small travel pair, better than having to wait for someone else to finish with the pair provided on the drive)
- Bring warm clothes that are easily layered...really cold at the start of the drive but can get very warm at the end and vice versa for afternoon drives
- Bring money as there is lots that is not included
- Bring something to do....books to read....small boardgames maybe?...there's not much to do here between game drives

Cons:
- Beer/wine not included...even when they ask you what drink you want on the game drive....pick juice or water or pop...it's free...pick beer - surprise on your final bill
- Only 2 game drives were included (we paid the extra for 2 more drives)
- Pool wasn't heated....so we never got to go in it....
- When we got there, they had our rooms all wrong. We asked for one room for mom/dad/baby and one room for 2 with separate beds - when we got there we had one huge hut....where we would have had to walk past a sleeping mom/dad/baby just to go pee or have a shower (risk waking the baby!!!)
- They were able to re-locate us to a different hut...but wanted to charge us an insane amount for this (we had pre-paid already and had a printout of what was confirmed) We had to fight with them numerous times over price...not what you're expecting to do on your vacation when you've already cofirmed everything...
- Bathrooms in all huts are not private....you'd better be comfortable with whoever you're with because the shower is glass and there is no door on the bathroom entrance!!!
- Poor lighting at night...I always felt like I was going to trip and fall on my way to/from the hut in th dark....

Room Tip: Try to triple confirm any requests regarding your room....but it might not help....

I stayed here from Friday to Sunday. The Lodge is beautiful in a nice setting with a waterhole do you can watch the wildlife from the comfort of the pool or observation deck. Fantastic food and very friendly and welcoming staff. I would highly recommend the walking safaris they offer. It is a rate treat to be able to walk on the bush and take in the peace, sights and sounds as well as getting close to the game in their natural environment.
